1. Roots
I haven’t been to Roots yet, but when my son is older and doesn’t need m there for bed time, I am going! It is managed by Michelin-starred chef Tommy Banks. Housed in a charming former pub, Roots’ stylish interiors give a comfortable and lively atmosphere. Roots is known for its farm-to-table philosophy, with menus reflecting the seasonal availability of ingredients. The tasting menus rotate around three distinct seasons – the hunger gap, the time of abundance, and preserving. This ensures that diners can enjoy the freshest ingredients at their peak. The evening menu is a tasting menu only. During lunch, you can pick the tasting menu or something from the lunch menu. If you have dietary requirements, you need to call in advance so they can prepare the appropriate menu for you.

Unusual Places to Eat in York
If you’re after something a bit different from the usual pubs and chains, York has some genuinely unusual places to eat worth knowing about.
Sora Sky Bar on the seventh floor of the Malmaison serves Asian tapas with panoramic rooftop views over the city — there’s nowhere else quite like it in York.
Zaap Thai recreates a Bangkok street food market inside a restaurant on Lendal, complete with tuk tuks, neon lights, and a menu of over 80 dishes. It sounds like a gimmick but it genuinely works.
Los Moros on Grape Lane brings North African cooking to a York back street with warm, low-lit interiors that feel unlike anywhere else in the city.
Doner Summer on Gillygate is a fully vegan restaurant doing convincing fried chicken and loaded fries — and the garlic chicken burger will make you question what you know about vegan food.
York Minster Refectory is set in a former school building right next to the Minster, with menus and decor that play on the school theme throughout. It’s not just the location that’s unusual — the food is genuinely excellent.
