AD| I feel like I start every post lately with ‘the cost of living is so high’ these days. But it’s just had an impact on every aspect of life – including food. We don’t eat much meat at home, for a few reasons. One of those reasons is the cost and when it comes to lamb, the cost can be eyewatering, which is a shame, as lamb is my favourite type of meat.

So when I was able to pick something from Swaledale Butchers for review, I picked the heritage breed lamb meat box.

About Swaledale Butchers

Swaledale Butchers is an online butcher located in Yorkshire. As we all know Yorkshire is the best county, and this meant we were already off to a good start with first impressions.

The native breed meat from Swaledale Online Butchers was previously only available to the UK’s top restaurants and chefs. Now you can order this delicious-tasting meat online.

There’s beef, pork, lamb, chicken, sausages, bacon and more. All the meat is dry-aged on the bone in our Himalayan salt-ageing chamber.

The Swaledale Heritage Breed Lamb Meat Box

I picked the lamb meat box as it’s our favourite type of meat but something we don’t often buy. I love a lamb shoulder slow-cooked so it falls off the bone! Even on the supermarkets’ half-price offer, it’s still expensive.

In the lamb meat box, you get (at the time of writing):

  • 2 x 440g Lamb Shanks
  • 2 x 300g Barnsley Chops
  • 4 x 120g Lamb Chops
  • 1 x 800g Shoulder of Lamb, Boned & Rolled
  • 1 x 800g Lamb Leg, Rolled
  • 1 x 480g pack Lamb Merguez Sausages

I actually thought it was a great price for how much you get, and these are good size joints. We also bought some diced leg of lamb separately.

It’s suitable for home freezing so we put most of it in the freezer. We have eaten six items so far, two fresh and four frozen and they were all delicious.

We made a lamb sausage casserole and mash with the Lamb Merguez Sausages. They were delicious and as the sausages were seasoned with Swaledale’s house blend of freshly ground spices, fresh chillies, fresh garlic and fresh coriander they packed quite the kick and added an as nice twist to what is usually a bland (but comforting!) dish.

We used the lamb shank to make curried lamb and rice dish. There was so much meat on just one, but it fell off the bone and was delicious.

We’ve made a rogan josh with the diced leg. Again, another delicious meal. Lamb curry is my favourite but we usually use chicken thighs as it’s cheaper, though I prefer the flavour of lamb.

We’ve had two Sunday dinners with the joints and still have some leftovers in the freezer for future meals.

  1. Wow the food looks delicious! I’d definitely give this a go but I’ll be honest I’m not fussed on Lamb so would try Beef or Chicken instead. It would be nice to order this for a meat-lover for Christmas too xx
