Spark York is the complete opposite of most bars in York. While most are characterised by their timber-framed medieval buildings, Spark:York is made from old shipping containers.
This isn’t just a bar, it’s a hub of different bars, food, shops, community theatre and even has a brewery. It celebrates individuality and creativity – and has become a proper York institution.
With burgers, pizza, street food, Thai, sweet bakery treats, crepes, beer, a wine cellar, cocktails and more – you won’t know where to start on entering Spark York. Best enjoyed on a warm day, as there’s lots of outdoor seating. You might want to avoid busy periods. We went on bank holiday Sunday – a hot day, also opening weekend.
We were lucky in that we spotted some seating inside Cuckoo Brewery. The guy working there said that nobody had come inside and sat down all day! They were just queuing outside. If it wasn’t for this, we would have struggled to find somewhere to sit as the place was pretty packed.

What is Spark:York?
Spark:York (also written as SparkYork or Sparks York) is one of York’s most distinctive venues – a collection of repurposed shipping containers housing independent bars, street food traders, shops, and creative spaces. Our first visit was on the opening weekend back in 2018, and the buzz was incredible.
The whole concept feels completely different from the rest of York. While the city is full of beautiful medieval architecture, Spark:York is unapologetically industrial and modern – and that contrast is exactly what makes it work.
What’s at Spark:York?
On our visit, the line-up included burgers, pizza, street food, Thai, sweet bakery treats, crepes, cocktails, a wine cellar, and Cuckoo Brewery with its own on-site taproom. There really was something for everyone. The whole site is best enjoyed on a warm day with outdoor seating – though we managed to grab a spot inside Cuckoo Brewery on what turned out to be a very busy opening bank holiday weekend.
One tip from our experience: if it’s busy outside, try heading indoors – we found a table inside Cuckoo Brewery while everyone else was queuing in the sun!
Who’s at Spark:York in 2026?
The line-up of traders at Spark:York has changed a lot since we first visited on opening weekend in 2018, and it’s honestly better than ever. Here’s who you’ll currently find there:
Food
Junk Soul Smothered serves up plant-based and vegan comfort food. SASA Greek Street Food does authentic grilled Greek dishes. Tiro brings Sicilian street food to the mix. Waqif Arabian Kitchen serves up the rich flavours of the Arabian Gulf. Sarras is an Indian and Gujarati street food spot. Baby Boy’s Burgers — which has won awards for its smash burgers — is always worth a visit. Vovó Cantina is a Brazilian-inspired grill kitchen. Clucking Oinks does buttermilk fried chicken burgers and fries. And RAD Pizza Shop rounds things off with independent wood-fired sourdough pizzas.
Drinks
There are four bars to choose from: BOHO (York’s smallest cocktail bar), The Outpost (a project from Turning Point Brewing Co), Piccadilly Tap (craft beer and natural wine), and Black Lines (a cocktail bar with a “drink different” philosophy). Node Coffee is on hand for coffee and pastries from 8am on weekdays.
Retail and Community
The General Store combines groceries and a zero-waste supermarket in one. Florable is a second-hand boutique, and Power & Peace Therapies offers holistic wellbeing treatments.
The vendor line-up does change regularly as Spark:York is set up to incubate new independent businesses, so it’s always worth checking the <a href=”https://www.sparkyork.org/our-traders/”>current traders page</a> before you visit.
Previous Vendors Worth Mentioning
The mix of traders has always been one of Spark:York’s strengths, and over the years some brilliant spots have called it home before moving on. I’ve reviewed a couple of them here on the blog — El Rayo Vegan Cantina was a Mexican vegan spot that I really loved, and Herbivorous was a fantastic plant-based option while it lasted. Both have since closed, but they’re a good example of the kind of exciting independents that have passed through Spark:York over the years. The revolving door of vendors is part of what keeps it interesting — there’s always something new to try.
Is Spark:York Worth Visiting?
Absolutely. It’s one of those York spots that feels genuinely different – a great place to spend a few hours eating, drinking, and wandering between the containers. Check sparkyork.org for the current vendor line-up and any events before you go.
