Quick Guide: What Makes a Great Breakfast in York?
York’s breakfast scene has absolutely exploded over the past few years. You’ll find everything from traditional full English breakfasts to Instagram-worthy pancake stacks, Eastern European specialities, and plant-based options. The best breakfast spots in York tend to share a few things: quality local ingredients, friendly service, and that cosy atmosphere that makes you want to linger over a second coffee.
Popular breakfast areas include Bishopthorpe Road (known as BishyRoad to locals), which is home to several top brunch spots, and Fossgate, which has become a foodie hotspot. Most places serve breakfast from around 9am on weekdays and 8.30am-10am at weekends, though some offer all-day breakfast options.

About Breakfast in York
York’s breakfast scene has exploded in recent years, with everything from traditional greasy spoon cafés to trendy brunch spots popping up across the city. York city centre is particularly brilliant for breakfast, with most places within easy walking distance of each other.
What to Expect:
- Traditional Full English: Many cafés serve the classic full English breakfast York is known for – sausages, bacon, eggs, beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, and toast
- Vegan & Vegetarian Options: York’s breakfast scene has improved massively for plant-based eaters, though some places are definitely better than others (I’ll point these out!)
- Brunch Culture: Weekend brunch in York is huge, so expect queues at popular spots
- Pricing: Budget-friendly chain breakfasts start around £5-8, while independent cafés charge £8-15 for a full breakfast
Top Tips for Breakfast York:
- Book ahead for weekends – places like Robinsons always have queues
- Arrive early – many breakfast spots stop serving at 11:30am or noon
- Check vegan options – some places excel at this, others offer nothing
- Parking – York city centre can be tricky; use park and ride or arrive early
1. Cafe 21 York: A Stylish Breakfast Haven
Tucked away in the Fenwick Department Store on St. Marys Square, Cafe 21 York offers a stylish and modern setting for breakfast in York. The atmosphere is effortlessly chic, and the hospitality is fantastic, making it an excellent choice for a business meeting, a mid-shopping trip refuel, or a quiet cup of coffee.
Cafe 21 York’s breakfast menu features a variety of dishes, including Eggs Benedict, Poached Eggs, Crushed Avocado with Lime and Chilli on Multigrain Toast, and a Cheddar Cheese and Spinach Soufflé. Their brunch offerings are equally impressive for those looking for the best brunch in York.
Vegan Options: Limited – they offer a fruit salad, which is pretty poor in my opinion! They could easily do smashed avocado on toast without eggs as they already have that dish. It’s disappointing for a restaurant of this calibre not to cater better to plant-based eaters.
Breakfast is served:
Monday – Saturday: 9am – 11.30am
Sunday: 10.30am – 11.30am
Address: Fenwick Department Store, 2 St. Marys Square, Coppergate Centre, York YO1 9WY
What Makes It Special: The setting inside Fenwick is lovely, and it’s perfect if you’re combining breakfast with shopping.

2. The Star Inn The City – Best Full English Breakfast in York
Hidden by the famous Lendal Bridge with stunning views of the River Ouse, The Star Inn The City is one of York’s most celebrated restaurants and probably my personal favourite for breakfast in York, and easily the best full English breakfast in York. Their commitment to serving exceptional seasonal dishes made with locally sourced produce has earned them numerous awards and accolades.
The Star Inn The City offers what many consider the best breakfast York has to offer. Their breakfast choices include everything from pancake stacks with ripe seasonal berries and wildflower honey to smoked salmon with free-range scrambled eggs. Their ‘Full Yorkshire’ – a creative take on the classic full English breakfast York city centre visitors love – is a crowd favourite, featuring award-winning sausages, black pudding, smoked back bacon, fried bread, grilled tomatoes, and field mushrooms.
What Makes It Stand Out: This is fine dining quality in a breakfast setting. The riverside location is stunning, especially on a sunny morning when you can watch the River Ouse while enjoying your meal. It’s pricier than most breakfast spots in York, but the quality justifies it.
View The Star Inn The City’s breakfast menu here.
Breakfast is served:
Friday – Sunday: 9.30am to 11.15am
Booking: Highly recommended, especially for Sunday breakfast

4. Rise: A Rising Star in York’s Breakfast Scene
You can find Rise on Fossgate, which has quickly become one of the most popular spots for breakfast York has to offer. Its 5-star rating on Tripadvisor speaks volumes about its quality. People rave about the friendly staff and the delicious, well-presented meals.
What’s On Offer: Their menu boasts many mouth-watering dishes. The eggs benedict and poached eggs come highly recommended by customers. They also offer creative options like vegan avocado toast, hearty full breakfasts, and gluten-free choices to cater to all dietary preferences.
The Atmosphere: With chic pink decor and mirrored walls, Rise isn’t just serving great food – it’s Instagram-worthy too. The open kitchen adds to the vibrant atmosphere, and you can watch your breakfast being prepared.
All-Day Breakfast: One of the best things about Rise is that breakfast and brunch are served all day, making it perfect if you’re looking for an all-day breakfast in York or a late brunch spot.
Address: 44 Fossgate, York YO1 9TF
Website: http://www.risebrunch.co.uk/
Top Tip: Can get very busy at weekends – arrive early or be prepared to queue!
5. Robinsons Cafe: The Best Breakfast in York (According to the Queues!)
Robinsons Cafe, located on Bishopthorpe Road (affectionately known as “Bishy Road” by locals), is a small family-run café that has gained a reputation for serving what many consider the best breakfast in York. They serve a wide range of breakfast options, including the classic fluffy pancakes with maple syrup and their highly recommended creamy truffle mushrooms.
The Reality: Every single time I walk past Robinsons Cafe, people are QUEUING to get in. It’s incredibly popular and always busy, and I genuinely think this is the best breakfast in York. The wait is worth it.
What Makes It Special:
- Relaxed, friendly atmosphere
- Excellent coffee (proper barista-made)
- Quality ingredients and beautifully presented dishes
- Great vegan and vegetarian options
- Space for buggies (important for parents!)

Mannetti’s, located on Lendal, is a delightful Italian cafe that serves up some of the best breakfasts in York. Customers rave about the chorizo hash and the waffles, making Mannetti’s a must-visit spot on your breakfast tour of York.
Address: 5 Lendal, York, YO1 8AQ
Website: https://www.mannettis.com/
9. Bruks Cafe
Bruks Cafe is a cosy, charming place for breakfast. With its delicious food and welcoming atmosphere, Bruks Cafe is the perfect spot to start your day.
They also have a great vegan selection and have a vegan menu! Woo! Most other places seem to just offer smashed avocado on toast, which is nice. But we like variety!
Address: 1 Peter Lane YO1 8SW.
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brukscafeyork/
10. Wheldrakes
This independent cafe serves all your favourite breakfast foods. From a full breakfast to eggs royale, this cute little place won’t disappoint.
Address: 5C Goodramgate, York, YO1 7LJ
11. Pig & Pastry: Award-Winning Breakfast York
Named the best breakfast in the UK by National Geographic, Pig & Pastry is absolutely worth the 10-minute walk from York city centre to Bishopthorpe Road. They have one of the best-looking breakfast menus I’ve seen, with several vegan options including a vegan breakfast burger that sounds absolutely delicious.
What to Expect: Expertly cooked brunch favourites and imaginative specials with a twist. The quality of ingredients is exceptional, and the presentation is beautiful. This is the kind of place where you take photos of your food before eating it (and it actually looks like the photos afterwards).
The Atmosphere: It’s a neighbourhood favourite with a relaxed vibe, though it can get incredibly busy at weekends. No bookings taken, so be prepared to queue at peak times.
Menu Highlights:
- The waffles (many regulars struggle to choose between these and the porridge!)
- Full breakfast options with quality bacon and sausages
- Vegan breakfast burger
- Imaginative seasonal specials
Address: 35 Bishopthorpe Road, York YO23 1NA
Website: http://thepigandpastry.com/
Top Tip: Worth the walk from the city centre – Bishopthorpe Road has become one of York’s foodie destinations.

12. Cafe FeVa
Cafe FeVa is a hidden gem nestled inside Red House Antiques, Cafe FeVa do a lovely breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea with lovely views of York. This is one of those places you wouldn’t know about unless someone tells you!
Address: Red House Antiques, 1 Duncombe Place, York. YO1 7ED
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cafefeva/
13. Mannion & Co
The menu does change daily at this Bistro, but don’t let that put you off. Mannion & Co has some amazing reviews on Trip Advisor making it a top contender for the best place to have breakfast in York.
Address: 1 Blake St, York YO1 8QJ
Website: http://www.mannionandco.co.uk/
14. Spring Espresso
Spring Espresso has two locations in York. The menu looks delicious, I’ll give them that! But where are the vegan options? Nowhere! Breakfast is the easiest meal to make small swaps for a vegan or plant-based diet. Not even avocado toast!
Address: 45 Fossgate, York YO1 9TF & 21 Lendal, York YO1 8AQ
Website: https://www.springespresso.co.uk/
15. The Perky Peacock Coffee Shop
This cute coffee shop is inside one of the oldest buildings in York. It’s more of a coffee shop than a breakfast place, as it only sells breakfast sandwiches, but the building is the experience. If you love the old buildings of York, this might be for you.
Address: Barker Tower, North St, York YO1 6BE
Website: https://perkypeacock.co.uk/
16. Partisan: Creative All-Day Breakfast & Brunch
Serving all-day breakfast and brunch, the menu at Partisan changes each season, which keeps things interesting. The menu is stunning – something different with a lot of detail and thought put into each dish.
The Vegan Breakfast – This is what sold me:
‘A skillet of scrambled rose harissa tofu, tempeh, mushrooms, vine tomatoes, homemade baked beans, home fries, avocado and Chimichurri. Served with sourdough toast and vegan spread.’
I am absolutely there. This is the kind of creative, thoughtful vegan breakfast that shows a kitchen actually cares about plant-based eating, rather than just slapping avocado on toast and calling it a day.
What Makes It Special: The attention to detail in every dish, the seasonal menu changes, and the fact they genuinely understand how to make exciting vegan food.
Address: 112 Micklegate, York YO1 6JX
Website: https://www.partisanuk.com/

17. The Cornish Bakery Colliergate
The Cornish Bakery sells the best sausage roll in the world. Their farmhouse sausage roll is amazing. I was absolutely floored when I tried it. I eat plant-based now (as if you can’t tell) and if any food is going to break me, it’s this sausage roll!
As this is a bakery, expect pastries and pies rather than a full-English here.
Address: 29-30 Colliergate, York YO1 8BL
Website: https://thecornishbakery.com/
18. Yates
If you want breakfast at reasonable prices and with no frills, then Yates has got you. Unless you’re vegan. Then you can have a black coffee or something instead. I guess you could order toast with no butter and beans or something.
Address: Church Ln, York YO1 9Q
Website: https://www.greatukpubs.co.uk/yates-york
19. Whipped: The Best Brunch in York (According to Me!)
I visited Whipped on New Year’s Eve and was genuinely impressed. They have a great brunch menu with some good vegan dishes, and they’ve recently had a renovation that’s transformed the place. It’s now a lovely looking café, whereas before it was more of a dessert and ice cream place. Now it does proper brunch and breakfast items too.
My Experience: We enjoyed our brunch there – I had the Eggs Benedict with extra avocado and it was lovely! The portion sizes are generous, the presentation is beautiful, and the service was brilliant. This is honestly the best brunch in York I’ve had.
The Only Downside: The toilet situation. It’s down some stairs and feels like someone’s old house toilet. It needs an update, and the toilet roll kept falling off the dispenser. But honestly, for the quality of food and service, this is a minor complaint.
Why I Love It: The food is excellent, the staff are friendly and attentive, and they’ve clearly put thought into their menu. It’s not just another generic café menu – there’s creativity here.
Address: 2 Clifford Street, York YO1 9RD
Top Tip: Great for a special brunch treat, and the central location makes it easy to combine with shopping or sightseeing.
20. Double Dutch Pancake House: Pancakes for Breakfast York
Pancakes are the perfect start to the day, and York is lucky to have a café that’s entirely dedicated to one of the world’s most popular breakfast foods! Double Dutch Pancake House offers sweet, savoury, vegan, and gluten-free pancake options.
Menu Highlights:
- The Full Dutch Vegetarian for adults
- Monkey Magic (bananas and salted caramel) for kids
- Rocky Road pancakes
- Savoury options for those who don’t have a sweet tooth
Perfect For: Families with children, pancake enthusiasts, anyone wanting something different from the standard full English breakfast York cafés typically serve.
Address: 7 Church Street, York YO1 8BG
21. Zest Brunch Bar: All-Day Breakfast York
Zest Brunch Bar serves all-day breakfast, brunch, and lunch, as well as 2-for-1 cocktails (though probably not at breakfast time!). It’s an attractive restaurant with a mix of comfortable seating and serves reasonably priced food.
What’s On Offer: A full English breakfast, eggs benedict, and various brunch classics. The all-day service makes it perfect if you’re after a late breakfast York city centre.
Atmosphere: Modern and welcoming, perfect for a leisurely brunch in York with friends.
Address: 5 Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma Gate, York YO1 8BL

Best Areas: Bishopthorpe Road and Fossgate are the two main breakfast hubs in York, with multiple excellent options on each street.

Multiple Wetherspoon pubs across York serve budget breakfasts. Expect the standard Wetherspoon breakfast menu – nothing fancy, but consistent and cheap.
