York Minster Refectory is a new fine dining restaurant in York. The former York Minster School is a great addition to York’s food scene. It’s only a short walk from the York Minster, you can actually see York Minster from the beer garden. It has attracted attention not just for its intriguing history, but also for its delicious offerings. Here’s my review of the York Minster Refectory.
History York Minster Refectory
The York Minster Refectory stands in a building with a remarkable history. Constructed in the 1830s, it initially served as the home of St. Peter’s School. Later, in 1903, it became the York Minster School which closed in summer 2020. Fast forward to the present day, and it has been transformed into a restaurant. This metamorphosis is attributed to the efforts of renowned Chef Andrew Pern.
York Minster Refectory Launch
The official opening of the York Minster Refectory in Early Spring 2023 was well-reported here in York. It was an event to remember, with the ceremonial ribbon-cutting performed by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. This special occasion occurred just weeks before the Royal Coronation, adding an extra dash of excitement to the launch. There are photos of the King and Queen at the opening framed on the wall at the entrance.
The Setting Of The Refectory
The Refectory is uniquely positioned to offer breathtaking views of the York Minster from its doorstep. This is a sight rarely seen by many, as the land was previously private. The building itself is a blend of the old and new, with church-like architecture complemented by modern, comfortable, and quirky interiors. Around the restaurant, there are hints at its former life as a school. With school equipment dotted around the building and incorporated into the interior design, the old school crest even features on some plates and around the building. The outdoor seating area is lovely, featuring a covered pergola covered with festoon lights, perfect for a summer’s evening.
The Food
The York Minster Refectory serves a full all-day menu, with light bites available during lunchtime. It’s a brasserie-style restaurant in a prime location. The modern British restaurant also a children’s menu, offering many dishes that cater to the different taste preferences of little people. The food is excellent, as expected from a restaurant run by Chef Andrew Pern (executive head chef of the Star Inn The City York) and his team. Their offerings are fine examples of British classics, prepared with the best ingredients and presented with flair.
They also offer vegetarian and vegan menus which sound delicious. There’s a breakfast menu which offers the typically full English breakfast, plus other breakfast favourites. The only thing it seems to be missing is an afternoon tea.
Seafood Delight
One of the best offerings at the York Minster Refectory is their seafood. Other guests have praised the quality and taste of the seafood dishes. Whether it’s a starter or a main course, the restaurant’s seafood selection never fails to impress. Some of their fish dishes include wild sea trout, wild salmon and North Sea halibut.
Drinks and Refreshments
In addition to its food menu, the York Minster Refectory also has a fine collection of cocktails, mocktails, wines, beers and spirits. Their coffee is worth a mention, offering a much-needed pick-me-up for weary travellers or locals.
Customer Feedback
One of the most telling indicators of a restaurant’s quality is the feedback it receives from its patrons. The York Minster Refectory has received positive reviews for its pleasant staff and fine service. Customers have also appreciated the reasonable prices and the enjoyable atmosphere. The restaurant has a high rating on Google, testifying to its consistent performance.
Private Dining Room
The York Minster Refectory also offers private dining for up to 40 people. This space provides an intimate setting for private dining options, making it ideal for various hospitality functions. They are a group menu with a starter, main and dessert for £50pp
Our Meal
This was the first time I had been for a meal with my husband alone in a long time. The last time was Christmas Eve 2019. Shortly after, lockdown happened and we had a baby so he’s been with us for every meal since then. Grandma has been eager to look after our toddler, so my husband asked if we could go out for food for his birthday. This new restaurant had been on my radar ever since it opened, so I knew it would be the perfect place to celebrate his birthday.
It was so hard to decide what to have. I usually eat plant-based but I will have fish on occasion. The vegan menu was great and I was tempted to have the Wild Mushroom and Summer Truffle “Pithivier”. But changed my mind last minute and went for the fish of the day which was Salmon, sauterne & poached jumbo grapes, nutmeg buttered spinach, Short Stack Farm herbs & brown shrimps, and lobster oil.
My husband picked the Yorkshire Warrendale Wagyu Loin which was on the specials.
For starters, we shared the Gordal Olives and Black Treacle Salmon. The Olives were delicious. Fresh, meaty and tasted great. The Black Treacle Salmon was one of the highlights. It was served with scallions, pickled ginger, wasabi and sesame dressing. Everything worked so well together, The wasabi dressing was creamy with a slight kick and the pickled ginger was amazing. My husband and I both agreed that it was probably the best salmon we had.
As for the main, my husband adored his steak. He said it’s probably in the top two steaks he’s ever had. It was seasoned with only salt and he hasn’t stopped talking about it. My salmon was also delicious – it was cooked perfectly, and the dressing and nutmeg-buttered spinach were delicious. I wasn’t a big fan of the grapes as I dislike fruit in my meals. Next time, I would order the skinny fries to go with it as although it was nice, it was small. Usually at restaurants like this, I don’t feel the need for a side as the mains are usually very rich, despite being small.
I’d also love to try the “Bouillabaisse” Of Roasted Stone Bass – I regret not getting it. The description is Shetland mussels, crispy squid, king scallop, Whitby crab “rouille” toast, and coastal pickings.
Now for the dessert. We were not ready for this. We went for bananas and custard which is described as ‘dark rum, muscovado sugar, cinder toffee’. It was a cold dessert, which is something we were not expecting. The banana on top was glazed with sugar, it was like eating the crunchy topping of the cream bûlee. There were big chunks of cinder toffee, and dried banana and the custard was delicious. It was also similar to a cream bûlee. I could have eaten another five.

This looks AMAZING. You can tell the attention to detail in this place is absolutely second to none. I find you usually need to order a side somewhere that’s fine dining because although the meals are amazing, they’re usually quite small! Both of your mains look incredible. Definitely on my list for when Carl and I finally get to York (we were supposed to be going today actually but had to cancel our trip because of his new job, boo!)
The food looks amazing! We went to York over 10 years ago, I think it’s time for another visit, it’s such a beautiful place.
