There are so many places to eat in York, it’s hard to decide where to go. If you’re after a Polish restaurant in York that’s a bit different from the usual options on Micklegate, Barbakan York is well worth the short walk to Fossgate.
Last weekend, my friends and I met up in York and decided to have some Polish food. I’ve heard a lot about The Blue Barbakan and it’s all been good! A lot of people say they do the best breakfast in York. We decided to go for dinner one sunny Saturday afternoon after completing an escape room.

About Blue Barbakan
The Blue Barbakan is a charming restaurant that showcases traditional Polish cuisine. It has a cosy atmosphere and lovely dishes. I’ve heard great things about the potato pancakes, pierogi, and beef dumplings. The chefs plate up true Polish food alongside European classics. Each dish has flavourful ingredients in generous portions.
The restaurant recently moved into the former Blue Bicycle premises on Fossgate, giving it more space while keeping the intimate, rustic charm it’s famous for. With exposed brickwork, candlelit tables, and a menu packed full of traditional Polish favourites, it’s perfect for both casual dinners and special occasions.

They serve interesting food like eggs Benedict in tomato sauce and beetroot soup with sour cream. With specialities such as golabki (cabbage rolls filled with meat) and bigos (a hearty stew), you can enjoy a large menu that goes beyond typical European fare. The mushroom soup starts meals off right, and there are indulgent mains like stuffed dumplings and perfectly cooked mussels.
This restaurant’s atmosphere is a cosy dining room looking out onto York’s cobbled streets The friendly staff welcome you inside, where European twists meet Western European-style decor. It’s a great place within York city centre’s food scene.
The Blue Barbakan menu
Blue Barbakan is a Polish restaurant on Fossgate (34 Fossgate, YO1 9TA), and the menu is a proper introduction to Polish cooking rather than a watered-down version of it. If you’ve never eaten Polish food before, this is a good place to start.
The menu covers breakfast, lunch and evening options, though worth knowing they’re closed on Tuesdays — don’t make the same mistake I’ve nearly made more than once.
The pierogi are the thing to begin with if Polish food is new to you. They’re dumplings, usually filled with potato and cheese or meat, and Blue Barbakan does them as a trio so you can try different fillings without committing to just one. The gołąbki — stuffed cabbage rolls with a savoury filling — are a long-standing Polish classic and they do them well here.
For something a bit more adventurous, the Hungarian goulash potato pancake is one of those things that sounds odd on paper and turns out to be exactly what you wanted. The rabbit leg is slow-cooked and genuinely worth trying if you like that kind of thing, and the waffles with Polish sausage are a good option if you want something a bit lighter.
Don’t skip dessert. The hazelnut and blueberry cake and the pistachio cake are both really good — they’re not the sort of thing you’d find in most York restaurants, which is exactly the point. It’s worth going specifically for the cakes, honestly.
They have separate vegan and gluten-free menus, dogs are welcome inside, and there’s a free kids’ breakfast option when an adult orders — a nice touch if you’re going with little ones. The restaurant has a 4.7-star rating from over 2,000 reviews on Google, which for a relatively niche cuisine in a city full of competition tells you something.
Closed Tuesdays. Everything else is fair game.

Our Meal
We decided to share our food. There were 4 of us and we shared five mains and one starter. I would advise doing this as I don’t think a main would have been enough for one person on the lunchtime menu. Evening meals may be a different story.

Here’s what we got:
- Rabbit rierogi: These were dumplings that were on the special list. I didn’t eat any of these as I don’t like to eat a lot of meat, but my friends enjoyed them.
- Spinach and oscypek (smoked cheese) Pierogi: This was the vegetarian version of the pierogi and it was delicious, my favourite dish.
- Lentil and sundried tomato pierogi with freshly made chimichurri sauce – this was the vegan version of the pierogi, also very nice.
- Golabki – oven-baked cabbage leaves with buckwheat and oyster mushrooms served in a tomato sauce. This was the vegan version – the meat version has spiced minced pork and rice. This was my least favourite dish just because I’m not a massive fan of tomato-based dishes.
- Bigos – Polish hunters stew. Cabbage with various cuts of meat and sausages and wild mushrooms. I didn’t try this one but again, my friends loved it.
The dumplings were amazing. I loved the soured cream and sauce they came with – a great addition. You can mix and match the types of dumplings. You get five so can try a bit of everything and don’t need to commit to one flavour if you can’t pick. I would get them again but they are best to be shared, I think. They seem more like a sharing starter than a main.
My friends also got a cake to share for dessert. All the cakes are homemade and displayed in a cabinet. They looked delicious.
We really enjoyed trying traditional Polish cuisine at the Blue Barbakan trying some Polish favourites. It’s a great chance to get a taste of Eastern Europe right in the UK. The chefs use fresh ingredients to create delicious plates that remind you of home cooking and there’s such friendly service. The staff know a lot about the menu and food, they are easily able to advise you if you are unsure of something! If you love trying delicious food and want to get away from the typical style restaurants, try this one. I’d love to try the breakfast menu one day.

They had a great range of vegan and vegetarian dishes, and also a kids menu. I just wish we could have had things from the dinner menu, but we went too early for this.
So yeah, good food, friendly staff and an overall nice experience at this independent restaurant!
