As soon as the leaves start to change and the air turns crisp, I find myself wanting to bring that autumn magic inside my home. It’s quite warm still here in the UK, but it’s been quite dull and rainy so I’ve got that autumn bug! September is the perfect time to start decorating for autumn.

I’ve packed my spring and summer decor away and it’s time to get cosy with warm colours for the colder months. So let’s go through some easy steps on how to get some autumn aesthetic into your living room, front porch or kitchen.

My favourite shops for autumn decor are The Range, Dunelm and Homesense!

I’m talking about seasonal candles, fairy lights and pumpkin-themed accents!

Updated September 2026: I’ve tidied this post up for this autumn. If you want to see how I’ve styled our living room, have a look at my autumn living room decor ideas.

Autumn Decorations

Right, time to get your living spaces all ready for autumn with pumpkin-themed accents, autumn candles, and cushions and throws!

Pumpkin-themed accents

Pumpkin-themed accents are a staple at this time of year. Ceramic pumpkins or pumpkin mugs never disappoint. You can get pumpkin candles and potpourri that look great on your coffee table.

Autumn candles and scents

Autumn and candles go hand in hand! And autumn fragrances are great for the new season! Cinnamon, pumpkin spice, apple cider, coffee and vanilla are all warming scents that are a great choice!

If flames aren’t your thing, then get a candle warmer so you can still enjoy the scent without an open flame. You can use wax melts and incense sticks to get your home smelling like a pumpkin-spiced latte.

Cushions and throws with autumnal motifs

Altering your cushions and introducing new throw blankets are great ways to introduce the autumn atmosphere to your home. Adding this item to a sofa, armchair or bed gives your room an autumnal touch. Throws and cushions decorated with autumnal motifs such as leaves, acorns, or pumpkin patterns can make any room appear festive. You can also invest in some burnt orange custom window shades, as a way to make your home feel really autumnal, or in-line with the current season.

Autumn Prints

I love changing prints up each season! Cosy autumn prints can really make a difference. I just bought some digital downloads from Etsy and got my favourites printed. I think they look great in my kitchen!

Seasonal Colour Palettes

When adding seasonal colour palettes, consider warm earth tones such as terracotta and deep reds. These hues can create a cosy ambience in your home during the autumn months.

Warm earth tones

Warm earth hues give a comforting aura to your household. Rich browns, burnt oranges and mustard yellows give rooms a cosy feel, and the easiest way to bring them in is with cushions and throws. Opting for chunky knits or velvet can add an extra dimension of texture.

Also, go for vases with dried flora or branches. They are great for any dining table or lounge area.

Bold oranges and deep reds

Bold oranges and deep reds are a classic autumn combination. These colours bring warmth to any room and match well with wooden floors, creating a welcoming space for anyone who steps through the front door.

Natural Elements in Autumn Decor

If you love rustic charm, then add dried flowers and branches to your home.

Dried flowers and branches

Dried flowers and branches have become a big hit in home decor. They bring a touch of autumn indoors in a beautiful and lasting way.

  1. Choose flowers that dry well, like lavender or roses, to add a touch of colour and texture to your space.
  2. Use a floral wire to create autumn garlands or wreaths, mixing in small pumpkins for an added autumnal look.
  3. Place them in glass vases or jars on tables or shelves to add interest and height to any room.
  4. Combine dried branches with fairy lights for an enchanting lighting effect that brings cosiness as the days get shorter.
  5. Create centrepieces by arranging dried flowers and pine cones on dining tables for seasonal touches during meals.
  6. Hang dried flower bouquets near windows where they can catch the light, creating stunning natural displays without needing water.
  7. Incorporate different shades of burnt orange, deep reds, and earthy colours from dried flowers into your colour scheme to reflect the season outside.
  8. For a budget-friendly option, try drying your own flowers at the end of summer; this gives you a head start on decorations for next year too.
  9. Purchase high-quality dried arrangements so your decor lasts through the winter months.
  10. Experiment with adding other natural materials such as acorns or pine cones into displays with dried florals for an added layer of autumn texture.

Pinecones and acorns

Pinecones and acorns bring a cosy feel to any room during autumn. They are a budget-friendly way to add seasonal decor to your home. Here’s how you can incorporate these natural elements into your interior design:

  1. Rinse pinecones and acorns well before bringing them indoors. This removes dirt and bugs.
  2. Let them dry completely to prevent any mildew.
  3. Arrange them in a metal tray for a rustic look.
  4. Place the tray on an old chest or vintage trunk to create a natural aesthetic.
  5. Pinecones are perfect for adding warmth to your decor, especially when displayed in large numbers.
  6. Acorns can fill glass jars or be scattered around candle holders for a unique look.
  7. Mixing pinecones with autumn leaves and fairy lights makes an attractive centrepiece for dining tables.
  8. Adding them to wreaths along with other autumn stems and colours enhances your door’s welcoming appeal.
  9. For a creative project, paint acorns in bold oranges and deep reds to match your colour scheme.

These simple steps help you use pinecones and acorns effectively in your autumn decorations, making your space feel warm and inviting during the cooler months.

Lighting for Autumn Ambience

Achieving the perfect lighting can be a great touch to your autumn decor. Consider filling your spaces with LED candles and fairy lights to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that complements the seasonal feel.

LED candles

LED candles offer a safe and healthy option for creating a warm and inviting autumn atmosphere. LED candles also offer a cost-effective solution for achieving a festive atmosphere in the home during this season.

Fairy lights

Fairy lights are a popular choice for creating a cosy autumnal ambience. They look lovely wrapped around a mirror or draped along a shelf, and once the clocks go back they make the whole room feel warmer. Battery ones with a timer are the easiest, as you don’t have to remember to turn them on.
