Why Autumn is the Best Time for a Living Room Refresh
Autumn is my favourite type of home decor. The new season brings such a distinct shift in mood that your summer living room suddenly feels… wrong. The bright whites and cool blues that worked perfectly in June now feel cold and unwelcoming.
This time of year calls for warm textures, rich colours, and that cosy ambience that makes you actually want to spend evenings at home rather than out and about.
My B&Q Autumn Living Room Makeover
I’m thrilled to be collaborating with B&Q on their autumn range this year. They’ve absolutely nailed the autumn vibes with their collection, and I was like a kid in a sweet shop browsing through all the options!
Here’s what I picked up and how I’ve styled my living room for the autumn season:

The Fireplace: Creating a Focal Point
The fireplace has always been the heart of our living room, but this autumn I’ve really made it the focal point. I used two of the Autumn Pine cone & Berry Garlands draped across the mantelpiece, and they’ve completely transformed the space. The combination of pinecones and berries brings in those natural elements that scream autumn without being over the top.
On the stone of the fireplace, I’ve placed two candles that add both visual interest and lovely seasonal scents. The Candlelight Green Ridged Fig & Apple Medium Scented Candle sits next to the Medium Purple & Orange House Ceramic Tea Light Holder. Even when they’re not lit, they add to the autumnal colours and create a warm, inviting display.
Soft Furnishings: The Easiest Way to Transform Your Space
Here’s a secret: soft furnishings are genuinely one of the easiest ways to update your living room for autumn. You don’t need to repaint walls or buy new furniture – just swapping out a few cushions and throws can go a long way in changing the entire feel of your room.
I added three autumn cushions to our sofa: the Cream Pumpkin Embroidered Effect Indoor Cushion and two Multicoloured Woodland Scene Print Effect Indoor Cushions. They’re the perfect spot of colour against our neutral sofa, and the woodland scenes just feel so appropriate for this time of year. The pumpkin one adds a fun, slightly whimsical touch without being too on-the-nose autumn.
Over the arm of the sofa, I’ve draped the Gallery™ Multicoloured Woven Checked Throw. Plaid blankets are absolutely having a moment right now, and for good reason. They add instant warmth and that rustic feel that works so well in an autumn living room. Plus, it’s actually functional – I’ve already used it several times while settling in for a cosy evening. This blanket is so soft, I love snuggling up with it.
I’ve tied it all together with the Silk Road Blue Traditional Large Rug. I love rugs and how much they transform the look and feel of the space.
Adding Ambience with Candles
I’m a massive candle person anyway, but autumn candles hit differently. On the side table next to the sofa, I’ve placed the Candlelight Orange Frosted Pumpkin Pie Small Scented Candle. Pumpkin spice candles might be a bit of a cliché, but honestly? They smell amazing and instantly make your home feel autumnal.

Autumn Living Room Decor Ideas: Beyond What I’ve Done
While I’m loving my B&Q autumn setup, there are loads of other autumn decor ideas you can incorporate depending on your style and budget. Let me share some of the best ways to create that cosy autumn feel in your own home.
Play with Your Colour Palette
The right colour palette makes all the difference in creating autumn vibes. Move away from those bright summer colours and embrace:
Warm, Rich Colours
- Deep reds and burnt oranges
- Earthy browns and warm woods
- Olive greens and deep forest greens
- Dusty pink and soft greys
Autumnal Shades for a Cosy Feel. Your autumn colour scheme doesn’t have to be all bold, statement colours. Subtle neutrals mixed with richer autumn tones create a sophisticated look. Think cream and caramel combined with touches of terracotta, or soft greys paired with deep red accents.
If your white walls feel too stark for autumn, you don’t need to repaint. Instead, add warmth through your soft furnishings and home accessories. A plush rug in earthy tones can completely change how a room with white walls feels.

Natural Elements: Bringing the Outdoors In
One of my personal favourite ways to decorate for autumn is incorporating natural materials. Nature-inspired artwork can also enhance this look such as Mangelsen’s beautiful landscape or wildlife prints can bring the beauty of the outdoors into your living space without needing to change your entire décor. This creates that nature-inspired colour palette and adds texture that makes your living space feel more organic and welcoming.
Real vs Faux Pumpkins Both have their place! Real pumpkins are brilliant for that authentic autumn feel, and you can get creative with them. Mini pumpkins scattered along a coffee table or mantelpiece add instant seasonal charm. However, faux pumpkins are more practical if you’re decorating early in the season – they won’t start getting soft and weird after a few weeks! I’ve actually taken up crochet recently, and I’ve been making my own pumpkins, as well as growing my own on my pumpkin patch.
Autumn Flowers and Foliage Pick up some autumn flowers from your local market or supermarket. Deep oranges, reds, and yellows in dahlias, chrysanthemums, or even dried flowers create beautiful displays. Alternatively, bring in branches with autumn leaves or create your own arrangements with foliage from the garden.
Wicker Baskets and Natural Materials Wicker baskets aren’t just practical storage solutions; they add that rustic feel to your living room. Use them to store throw blankets, magazines, or even just as decorative elements. Other natural materials like wood, jute, and linen all work brilliantly in autumn interiors.

Layering: The Secret to a Cosy Living Room
If there’s one interior design principle that’s crucial for creating a cosy autumn room, it’s layering. It applies to textures, lighting, and every accessory in your autumn decor for the living room.
Soft Textures Everywhere: Layer different textures to create depth and interest. Mix smooth velvet cushions with chunky knit cushion covers. Combine a wool throw with linen fabrics. The variety in soft textures makes your living room feel more inviting and touchable.
Throw Blankets: More is More I used to think having multiple throw blankets was excessive, but it’s actually genius for autumn. Drape them over the sofa, fold them in a basket, hang them over the back of chairs. Not only do they look cosy, but when the cooler months hit properly, everyone fighting over the one good blanket becomes a thing of the past!
Rugs on Rugs If you’ve got hard floors, layering rugs is a great way to add warmth and create defined areas in your living space. A large neutral rug as your base with a smaller, more decorative one on top creates visual interest and makes the space feel more intimate. We have awful green carpets that we’ve not replaced yet, so rugs are a big favourite of mine.
Lighting: Setting the Mood
Lighting is absolutely crucial for creating that cosy feel as the evenings get darker earlier.
Ditch the Harsh Overhead Lighting Harsh overhead lights are the enemy of cosy autumn ambience. Instead, rely on table lamps, floor lamps, and candles to create pools of warm light throughout the room. This creates a much softer, more inviting atmosphere. Always aim for at least three different light sources.
Fairy Lights Aren’t Just for Christmas Fairy lights add a lovely gentle glow and can be used year-round. Drape them along a mantelpiece, wind them around a bookshelf, or place them in glass jars or wicker baskets. The soft twinkle creates instant cosy vibes without feeling too childish or Christmas-y.
Candlelight for Atmosphere Beyond scented candles, unscented pillar candles in various heights create beautiful displays. Group them on your coffee table, dining table, or mantelpiece. The flickering light is incredibly soothing and makes your living room feel like a sanctuary from the outside world.
Small Touches
Sometimes it’s the little things that really pull a look together. Here are some easy ways to add autumn touches without a massive overhaul:
The Coffee Table Your coffee table is the perfect spot for creating a small autumn display. Stack some books, add a candle, scatter some pinecones or acorns, place a small vase with autumn flowers. Keep it low so it doesn’t obstruct conversation, but make it interesting enough to be a talking point.
Change Your Cushion Covers If you already have cushion inners, just swapping the cushion covers is an incredibly cost-effective way to update your look. Look for autumn-appropriate patterns and colours, or even better, get some in different colours so you can switch them around depending on your mood.
Update Your Side Table The side table next to your sofa is prime real estate for a table lamp that creates that warm glow, a candle for seasonal scents, and maybe a small plant or decorative object. It’s a small space but making it feel autumnal adds to the whole experience of the room.

Different Styles, Similar Look
The brilliant thing about autumn decor is that it works with virtually any interior design style. You just need to adapt the approach slightly.
Modern Minimalist Autumn
If your home leans minimalist, embrace subtle neutrals with just a few key autumnal shades. A single statement cushion in burnt orange, a simple arrangement of branches in a clear vase, and a quality scented candle might be all you need.
Rustic Country Autumn
Love that rustic feel? Go all in with wooden accents, plaid blankets, wicker baskets, and loads of natural materials. This style suits the traditional autumn aesthetic beautifully.
Contemporary with Bolder Colours
For a more contemporary look, don’t be afraid of bolder colours and unexpected combinations. A dusty pink and olive green combination feels fresh and modern while still being autumnal. Mix in some metallics like copper or brass for extra sophistication.
Boho Autumn
Layering is key for boho style, so autumn is your time to shine! Mix patterns freely, add loads of different textures, incorporate natural materials, and create that relaxed, collected-over-time vibe. Macramé wall hangings, rattan furniture, and an eclectic mix of cushions all work beautifully.
Making Your Autumn Living Room Work for You
Here’s the thing about all these autumn decor ideas: they’re just suggestions. Your own home should reflect your personality and lifestyle.
Consider Your Living Room Layout
Before you start buying autumn home accessories, think about your living room layout and what makes sense for your space. If you have a tiny living room, loads of decorative elements might make it feel cluttered rather than cosy. In a larger space, you might need more items to make the space feel warm and intimate.
Budget-Friendly Autumn Updates
You absolutely don’t need to spend a fortune to create autumn vibes. Some of the best ways to get that autumn feel cost next to nothing:
- Forage for pinecones, acorns, and interesting branches on autumn walks
- Rearrange what you already have to create new displays
- Make your own decorations (dried orange slices or orange and clove pomanders are a fun DIY project and make the room smell lovely)
- Shop your own home – that throw that’s been in the cupboard or cushions from another room might work perfectly
- Look for autumn home accessories in charity shops or on marketplace sites
- Collect items slowly over the years
Don’t Forget the Rest of Your Home
While I’ve focused on the living room (it’s where we spend most of our time!), these ideas work throughout your home. The dining table, bedrooms (extra bedding in autumn colours feels so luxurious), and even the hallway benefit from some autumn touches.

The Emotional Side of Seasonal Decorating
Can I get a bit deep for a moment? There’s something really grounding about decorating your home for autumn. In our busy, always-connected lives, taking the time to notice the seasons changing and reflecting that in your living space connects you to the natural rhythm of the year.
When I’m updating my home for autumn, I’m forced to slow down, pay attention, and make intentional choices about my environment. It’s a fun way to practice mindfulness without it feeling like another thing on the to-do list.
Plus, coming home to a space that feels seasonally appropriate just hits differently. It’s like your home is giving you a warm welcome that matches the season outside.
My Final Thoughts on Autumn Living Room Decor
Creating autumn decor for your living room doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. Start with a few key pieces – maybe some autumn cushions, a throw, and a lovely scented candle – and build from there if you want to.
The B&Q autumn range has been perfect for my space because the pieces are stylish without being too trend-specific, and they’re actually affordable. I can see myself using these items for several autumns to come, which makes them feel like a proper investment rather than throwaway seasonal stuff.
Whether you go all out with a complete autumn transformation or just add a few subtle touches, the goal is the same: create a living space that makes you want to curl up, slow down, and enjoy the cooler months ahead. Your autumn living room should be your cosy place to hide from the weather.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a date with my sofa, that woven checked throw, and a cup of tea. The autumn decorating is done, and it’s time to actually enjoy it!
What are your favourite autumn living room decor ideas? Are you a full autumn overhaul person, or do you prefer just adding a few seasonal touches? I’d love to hear how you make your space feel cosy for the new season!
Frequently Asked Questions: Autumn Living Room Decor
What are the best colours for autumn living room decor?
Warm, earthy tones work best, like burnt orange, deep red, terracotta, olive green, and rich brown. You don’t need to go all in though; even adding one or two autumn-coloured cushions to a neutral sofa makes a big difference.
How do I make my living room cosy for autumn without spending much?
Throws and cushion covers are the cheapest way to make a big change. Beyond that, candles (even supermarket own-brand ones), rearranging what you already own, and foraging for pinecones or branches on a walk cost nothing. The effect is in the layering, not the price tag.
What autumn decor works for a modern living room?
Keep it restrained, with one or two pieces in a rich autumn shade rather than lots of overtly seasonal items. A single cushion in burnt orange, a good quality candle, and a woven throw are all you need for a modern space. Avoid anything too kitsch or pumpkin-heavy if you want a sophisticated look.
When should I start decorating for autumn?
Whenever it feels right! Traditionally late September or early October as the weather shifts. I find it works best once the evenings are noticeably darker. tTat’s when the warm lighting and cosy textures really start earning their keep.
Are rugs a good idea for autumn living room decor?
Yes, a rug in a warm earthy tone is one of the most effective autumn updates, especially on hard floors. It adds warmth underfoot and visually grounds the space. If you already have a rug, layering a smaller one on top is a good way to add interest and change things up seasonally.
How Do I Make My Living Room Feel Autumnal Without It Looking Like Halloween?
Stick to colours and textures rather than themed decorations. Rust, olive and mustard cushions, a chunky throw, a few candles and some dried flowers or branches will feel autumnal right through to November, whereas ghosts and bats need packing away after the 31st.
