Starting a fitness journey is a personal thing, and every individual’s experience is unique. For some, it’s a smooth transition to regular exercise; for others, it’s a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs. Among the many hurdles you may face, one that is commonly experienced but not often discussed is gym anxiety about the right clothes to wear.

The mere thought of stepping into a gym, especially after a long break, can be quite intimidating. Post-pregnancy, I found myself in a similar situation, with my body going through numerous changes. My once familiar workout attire no longer seemed suitable, and the flashy trends in gym wear didn’t seem to cater to my needs. I wanted a new workout wardrobe but I struggled to find new clothes that made me feel good. Before I had my baby, I wore leggings and tank tops. But I wanted clothing that covered my arms and was a bit baggier.

It’s easy to say ‘don’t worry about what others think‘ but it’s not that easy when you don’t feel confident in your own skin. If you feel a certain way, I think it’s fine to just wear loose clothing and not worry about what gym outfits are in style right now. As your confidence level grows, you can invest in new gym gear,

Understanding Gym Anxiety

Gym anxiety is a feeling of discomfort or apprehension associated with gym environments. This feeling can be heightened when your body has undergone significant changes, like after having a baby. You may feel self-conscious about your appearance or insecure about not being in sync with the latest gym wear trends. It’s crucial to understand that these feelings are completely normal and every individual, irrespective of their fitness level, experiences them at some point.

My Personal Brush with Gym Anxiety

I used to be a regular at the gym, visiting 5-6 times a week. But that was three years ago, before my beautiful baby came into my life. Post-pregnancy, my body changed, and I found myself feeling insecure and self-conscious about my appearance. The trendy gym clothes, designed to show off toned bodies, didn’t seem suitable for my new physique. I hate tight clothes anyway, and now lots of gym leggings seem to be made to show off your whole bottom, bum crack and all. And you cannot get a top that isn’t cropped. I realised that I was facing gym anxiety, and I needed to tackle it head-on to continue my fitness journey.

My son starts pre-school in January so I’d like to join a gym again and get back into living a healthy lifestyle and having a regular exercise program. I’ve tried numerous times before, but it’s been a struggling with my husband working long hours 6 days a week, leaving most of the childcare up to me.

Overcoming Gym Anxiety

Overcoming gym anxiety may seem daunting, but it’s not an impossible task. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you build your gym confidence and get back on track with your fitness journey.

Step 1: Setting Realistic Fitness Goals

Setting achievable fitness goals is the first step towards overcoming gym anxiety. Rather than fixating on reaching your pre-pregnancy weight or fitting into your old workout clothes, focus on improving your overall fitness level. You can start by setting small, attainable goals like completing 30 minutes of cardio or lifting a certain amount of weight. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. I started by running 5k again. The goal was just to be able to run 5km. It didn’t matter how fast or slow.

Step 2: Investing in Suitable Gym Clothes

So, what clothes to wear in the gym? Investing in suitable gym clothes is an essential factor in boosting your gym confidence. While the market is flooded with trendy workout wear boasting cut-out backs, cropped tops and form-fitting leggings, it’s important to choose clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident. Opt for breathable fabrics and clothes that flatter your body type. A supportive sports bra is a must-have in your gym wardrobe. It not only offers necessary support but also boosts your confidence by enhancing your silhouette.

I’ve invested in some black pants that have a side pocket for my phone, and I’m going to get some baggy black cotton t-shirts for the men’s section (I love baggy gym tops!) in the supermarket, as these are generally longer. I feel like I want to cover up when I go back to the gym as I feel a bit self-conscious, and the last thing I want to be doing is worrying about how I look. For those who prefer versatile workout tops that can double as everyday wear, bandeaus are a stylish and functional option that provide both comfort and support.

Here are some clothes that might make you feel better until you feel more confident:

  • baggy t-shirts
  • sweatpants
  • long-sleeved tops
  • dark colours
  • gym kit that fits properly

That last one is important, don’t try to squeeze yourself into smaller clothes as it can make you feel very aware of your body. You want to feel comfortable, not like you are wearing things that are too small.

Step 3: Familiarising Yourself with the Gym Environment

If you’re stepping into a gym after a long break, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. Familiarising yourself with the gym environment can help alleviate this feeling. Start by taking a tour of the gym and understanding how different machines work. If possible, hire a personal trainer for the initial few days. They can guide you through proper form and workout routines suitable for your fitness level.

Step 4: Practising Mindfulness

Practising mindfulness is a great way to manage gym anxiety. It involves focusing on your workout routine and physical sensations rather than worrying about how you look or what others might think. Pay attention to the strength of your body, the rhythm of your breath, and the progress you’re making. This not only improves your workout efficiency but also boosts your gym confidence.

Step 5: Adopting a Positive Mindset

Adopting a positive mindset is crucial in overcoming gym anxiety. Rather than focusing on your insecurities, concentrate on your strengths and the progress you’re making. Celebrate every milestone, no matter how small, and don’t let minor setbacks deter you from your fitness goals.

Additional Workout Gear

In addition to suitable gym clothes, investing in additional workout gear can significantly enhance your gym experience. Here are a few items that can offer comfort and boost your confidence at the gym:

Workout Gloves

Workout gloves offer a firm grip and protect your hands from calluses and blisters, making your workouts more comfortable and efficient. These are a good idea if you plan to do lots of deadlifts and heavy powerlifting.

Breathable Socks

Investing in breathable socks can prevent sweaty feet and blisters, offering you a comfortable workout experience.

Fitness Tracker

A fitness tracker can help monitor your progress and keep you motivated. It’s a handy tool to track your heart rate, calories burned, steps taken and much more. I have an Apple Watch, which I love.

Gym Bag

A well-organised gym bag can make your gym visits more convenient. Carry essentials like a water bottle, towel, change of clothes, deodorant, and an extra pair of shoes.

Start Your Fitness Journey with Confidence

Starting your fitness journey involves accepting your body, acknowledging your insecurities and working towards improving your fitness level. Remember, every individual is unique, and comparing your progress with others can only lead to unnecessary stress. Focus on your personal growth, stay consistent, and you’ll gradually see a positive transformation. Remember that the gym is for everyone, not just for fit people! It’s got people of all ages, genders and body types going for different reasons. So invest in your gym membership and get ready for some positive results.

I hope you enjoyed learning about what to wear to the gym if you’re self-conscious. Gym anxiety is a common experience, but with the right approach, it can be effectively managed. So, put on your sports bra, tie up those laces and step into the gym with renewed confidence. After all, this fitness journey is all about you – your health, your progress and your happiness.

  2. This article speaks to me. I’ve just stared exercising again after the babies and getting clothes that you feel comfortable in is a major step. I’ve started with dark colors and will add more clothes as I progress. Thanks for sharing.

  3. These tips for what gym clothes to wear are great! I remember when I first joined a gym back in 2016, I was so nervous about going and I felt very self-conscious about my body and what I wore there. But I like to think that there are plenty of others who feel the same as I do, so that’s what I kept thinking whenever I walked in and worked out! x

  4. There’s so much trendy gym gear around nowadays it scares me. I sound like such a grandma. Everything’s so super skin tight, it just looks uncomfortable to me. I’m not a gym goer, but I regularly do yoga and I’d like to get back into running when the nights get a bit lighter. Something I need to invest in is leggings with a phone pocket. I have some from Asda which I really love! They’re actually so comfortable, but there’s no pockets/pouch for my phone. If I’m running I like to track it and I always feel silly running with my phone in my hand. Good luck with your fitness journey!!

  5. Awwww… thank you so much for this post. I have been contemplating on going to the gym for a while now. Mine is due to distance, weather has also been unfavorable and fees.
I might probably start small at home and see where that takes me

  6. This post is great and perfect for my mindset right now. I tend to wear big, baggy tops when working out because I’m self conscious but then it makes me feel worse, if that makes sense!?

  9. I’m getting back into a fitness routine so I need to invest in some new clothes! I’m confident in leggings but not tight tops, I like something in-between fitted and baggy I think!
