As you know by now, I’m always trying to make more sustainable swaps to do my bit for the environment. Bazoo toilet paper is my latest swap, it’s a much more sustainable alternative to toilet roll. We all use toilet paper and I bet most of us don’t consider its environmental impact. Traditional toilet paper production contributes significantly to deforestation and climate change.

That’s where Bazoo comes in. This brand has eco-friendly alternatives to toilet roll, kitchen roll and a growing range of other household products.

The Environmental Cost of Regular Toilet Paper

Traditional toilet paper production is an environmental disaster. Every day, over 1 million trees are chopped down to meet the global demand for toilet paper, which accounts for approximately 15% of worldwide deforestation.

These figures are shocking when you consider regular hardwood trees, which are commonly used for toilet paper production, take between 40-60 years to mature. This means that the rate of consumption far outpaces the rate of replenishment, leading to devastating environmental consequences.

Plus the production process of regular toilet paper is full of chemicals. The use of chlorine for bleaching and the presence of BPA (Bisphenol A) in normal and recycled toilet paper are serious health and environmental concerns.

Enter Bazoo: The Bamboo Toilet Paper

Bazoo, a UK-based startup founded by Sanmarie Grobler and Thomas Trow in 2021, aims to mitigate these environmental concerns with its 100% bamboo toilet paper. This eco friendly loo paper is a more sustainable alternative to traditional toilet paper with many environmental benefits. There are a few eco friendly toilet paper brands on the market now, but here’s what makes Bazoo stand out:

The Sustainability of Bamboo

Bamboo is a highly renewable resource that can grow up to 35 inches per day and only takes 3-5 years to grow. This rapid growth rate, which is approximately 30 times faster than regular hardwood trees, means that bamboo can be harvested and replenished much more quickly, reducing the strain on forests.

Bamboo has a higher capacity to absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. Specifically, bamboo absorbs 30% more CO2 and produces 35% more O2 than regular trees. This makes bamboo a great resource in the fight against climate change.

Bamboo also requires less water to grow and does not require the use of harmful pesticides or fertilisers. The processing of bamboo into toilet paper is a more environmentally friendly process, primarily because it does not require bleach, reducing its carbon emissions by 65% compared to regular toilet paper.

The Quality of Bazoo Toilet Paper

Bazoo doesn’t just excel in sustainability; it also delivers on quality. Compared to regular toilet paper, Bazoo’s bamboo paper has softer and stronger sheets vs supermarket brands.

Bazoo toilet paper is safe for various types of toilets, including composting toilets and sensitive systems like septic tanks. This makes it a great option for most people.

There are also 370 sheets per Bazoo roll, whereas traditional toilet rolls have around 150-170 sheets, so each roll of this loo paper will last longer so it’s good value for money.

The Packaging of Bazoo Toilet Paper

You may have noticed that most toilet paper brands on supermarket shelves are packed in plastic packaging, even recycled paper. Bazoo prides itself on its 100% plastic-free packaging. Each toilet roll is encased in recyclable paper, thereby eliminating the use of single-use plastic from their supply chain. This commitment to zero plastic is a significant step towards reducing plastic waste that often ends up in our oceans and landfills. The packaging is also in colourful and fun designs which look great on display. I love the variety of designs, each roll has different animals on them.

You can also opt for unpackaged toilet paper without the recycled paper packaging.

Unbleached bamboo toilet paper

You can get white bamboo toilet paper, or opt for the unbleached option. While the white version uses chlorine-free bleach, and no harmful inks or dyes, the unbleached version takes it one step further by using zero bleach at all.

Bleached vs Unbleached Toilet Paper

The main difference between bleached and unbleached toilet paper lies in the bleaching process used during manufacturing.

  1. Bleached Toilet Paper:
    • Process: Bleached toilet paper undergoes a bleaching process to achieve its white colour. This process often involves the use of chlorine or chlorine compounds. While chlorine bleach is effective in removing colour, it has raised environmental concerns due to the potential formation of harmful byproducts such as dioxins.
    • Colour: White or light-coloured.
    • Softness: Bleached toilet paper is often perceived as softer because the bleaching process can break down fibres, resulting in a smoother texture.
    • Environmental Impact: The bleaching process can have negative environmental effects. Some manufacturers use alternative bleaching methods, such as oxygen or hydrogen peroxide, which are considered more environmentally friendly.
  2. Unbleached Toilet Paper:
    • Process: Unbleached toilet paper skips the bleaching process altogether, maintaining the natural colour of the pulp. This can be light brown or beige.
    • Colour: Brown or beige, depending on the type of pulp used.
    • Softness: Unbleached toilet paper may be perceived as less soft compared to its bleached counterpart because it retains more natural fibre structure.
    • Environmental Impact: Unbleached toilet paper is often considered more environmentally friendly since it avoids the use of chlorine-based bleach. It may also require less processing, saving energy and resources.

Comparison with Other Brands: Cheeky Panda and Naked Sprout

So, what is the best sustainable toilet paper company? While Bazoo is a leading player in the bamboo toilet paper market, it is not the only one. Brands like Cheeky Panda and Naked Sprout are also offering sustainable toilet rolls of good quality. However, each brand has unique characteristics and offers different benefits.

Cheeky Panda

Cheeky Panda is a certified B Corporation that also produces 100% bamboo toilet paper. Its products are vegan-certified, cruelty-free, and dermatologically tested. Cheeky Panda is also committed to offsetting its carbon emissions and has partnerships with multiple organisations, including the World Land Trust and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation.

Despite these commendable efforts, Cheeky Panda’s bamboo toilet paper is typically more expensive than Bazoo’s. Moreover, some users have reported that Cheeky Panda’s toilet paper is slightly thinner than Bazoo’s.

Naked Sprout

Naked Sprout offers a minimalist approach to eco-friendly toilet paper. Their toilet paper is unbleached, unwrapped, and contains no additives, bleach, or chemicals, making it as pure as they come. Every purchase from Naked Sprout provides safe water for a child in Kenya for a year through their partnership with the charity Just a Drop.

However, Naked Sprout’s toilet paper is not made from bamboo but from wood pulp. While they are committed to reducing their carbon footprint, they do not have a carbon offset programme in place.

My Thoughts On Bazoo

I think that Bazoo is a strong contender in the eco-friendly toilet paper market. I love their commitment to sustainability, high-quality products, plastic-free packaging, and affordable pricing. Bazoo offers an excellent balance of environmental responsibility and consumer satisfaction. Plus, the designs on the wrappers are so cute!

So, the next time you reach for a roll of toilet paper, consider choosing Bazoo. It’s a small change that can make a big difference in the fight against deforestation and climate change. After all, every choice we make impacts the world around us, and choosing Bazoo is a step towards a more sustainable future.

  1. We loved Bazoo when we used it – I just don’t remember why we stopped, it was something to do with a shipping issue on our end (i.e Royal Mail to NI)! I loved how they aren’t just ego-friendly, but the packaging is cute too!
