So, it’s January, we are in our new home, and we have big plans for the garden this year! We really want to start growing our own fruit and vegetables. We were desperate to start this last year, but our house purchase fell through, meaning we had to wait another 6 months to move.

How we are in our new home, we can actually grow some food!

Our garden is massive, but there is a lot of work to do. For example, I’ve no idea where we are actually going to put the vegetables in the ground yet! We need to create some raised beds, or at least dig some vegetable patches out. But that will be done later.

For now, we are starting to sow some seeds indoors. We will also be using our conservatory as a bit of a greenhouse this year. We’ll likely not get a greenhouse in place until next year.

Last year, we did manage to grow a few things in a small greenhouse we got from B&Q, but this year we can really let our hair down and go a bit wild with what we grow! I’m so excited.

So far, I’ve sown the following seeds:

  • Bell peppers: These are such a staple food for us, we always get them on the shopping so growing them was a no-brainer. They need to be kept warm at this time of year, so they are currently on a heat mat in the house.
  • Aubergine: Though we don’t usually eat aubergine, I always enjoy it when we have it. This is also on a heat mat.
  • Onions: These are another staple food for us, so I’m having a crack at these. Though I initially put them in the conservatory, I later read it’s better to keep them warm to germinate, so they are on the heat mat as well.
  • Spinach: I tried to grow this last year, but I didn’t have anywhere to put it when it got too big for the pots! This is on a windowsill in the house.
  • Cauliflower: This is another food that we don’t have too often, but it seemed like a typical English garden veg!
  • Mixed leaves: Salad leaves are always good to have, especially in the summer!
  • Sweet Peas: Though not a vegetable or fruit, I wanted to have a go at growing some flowers as well. We have no idea what flowers will come up in our garde,n so it will be nice to have something pretty!

I’ve planted them in seed trays and will later transfer them to either bigger pots or the garden when it’s time! The sweet peas are in 7.5cm pots.

What I’ve got planned

  • Carrots: I’ve got the seeds for the carrots, but I need more compost. I’m going to plant these in deeper pots and maybe grow them in the conservatory so I don’t need to transfer them. Apparently they are better grown directly into the soil as they are hard to transfer. I can always plant some into the soil when it gets a bit warmer out.
  • Potatoes: I’ve ordered some seeding potatoes which I’ll have to leave to chit for a while before I can plant in a few weeks. I’ve never grown potatoes befor,e but again, they’re such a staple food!
  • Strawberries: I’ve ordered 20 bare-root strawberries, which should give me plenty of fruit!

Later down the line, I also want to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, and courgettes and get some blueberries on the go!
