ad. I never know what to call this room. Entrance hall sounds too grand, and hallway isn’t quite right either. Basically, when you enter our house, there is a big room. The stairs go off to the right and you can turn to the kitchen, living room or office.
On the floor plan, it is marked as the dining hall, as the previous owners used it as a formal dining room.
I was stumped about what to do with this room. But the truth is, I like it empty. I like the space. I like to walk into the house and not have to walk around furniture. It’s a privilege I never had in our new build, where it was almost impossible to stand up and spread your arms without touching anything. It feels so freeing to have SPACE.

One thing I did know was that I wanted some new wall art. I had a mish-mash of prints from the old house up here. But nothing really went together. So when I knew I was going to be working with Desenio again, this is the room that was my focus.

The Gallery Wall Tool
My favourite thing about Desenio is the gallery wall tool. There are hundreds of examples to inspire you here. You can look through different gallery walls and see how different prints work together. This is great if you aren’t sure what will work together. You can add a gallery wall straight to your basket!
The gallery wall tool lets you pick different layouts and then try different prints in the templates to see how they look.
As I already knew the layout I was going for, I just used this tool to help me pick prints within the same colour scheme.

For the brick wall, I thought gold frames would work great, and I’m so glad I picked them. I love the colours in the painted blossom prints, too. It brightens up the room so much, as there isn’t much natural light in here. The frames are 70cm x 50cm.
To the left of the brick wall, I stacked two 40cm x 30cm prints on top of each other.

I also put two 70cm x 50cm prints on either side of the door. These are a little less ‘matchy’ than the others, but I still think it looks great. Sometimes you can match too much, and I like things to look a little more.. what’s the word I’m looking for here? Homemade? Organic? Just a little rough around the edges. I think it makes things look more homely.

The cabinet. Now, this has been driving me nuts since we got it. We bought it in winter so we could have a grow cabinet and start sowing seeds early. So we had lights and a heat mat hooked up to it. Now, all the plants are in the conservatory, so this cabinet is empty but full of wires. It looked messy, and there were lights attached to it, which made it hard to hide.
I put a table runner on the shelf, which hides the light and picked some decor items from other rooms and put them in just to make it look like, um, something. I’m not 100% set on how it looks at the moment, but I’m happy with it for now, as I’ve not had to spend any money – I just used existing items.

I’ve put two plants on either side of the cabinet. One Yuka tree, and the other one is an Areca Palm. I’m hoping they will do okay in this room, which doesn’t get much light. I think they’ll be okay, but just not grow much.
On top of the cabinet, I’ve styled some items I got a few weeks ago, and some I already had. The plants are fake. Which kills me, but this is the dullest room in the house, so I don’t want to fill it with plants, and I already had some of them, so I might as well use them!

I cannot believe how much happier I am with this space now. I love coming home and walking into this room. It was important for me to make it a room I love and to really give a good first impression when guests come over.
