If you’re looking for a great place to eat in North Yorkshire, then FortySix in Malton deserves some attention. We went last weekend and were impressed! Of course, it is in North Yorkshire’s food capital, so food lovers are sure to find many places that serve delicious food here. This is just one of many.

Updated March 2026 – FortySix continues to be one of the top-rated restaurants in Malton. It is open Tuesday through Sunday, with late-night small plates served Thursday to Saturday. Booking is essential as they are frequently full, especially on weekends.

Heart of Malton’s Market Place

The marketplace is full of great food restaurants in Malton. It’s the beating pulse of this little market town, which also has monthly food markets and lively events. St Michael’s Malton stands tall nearby, adding a historic touch to the area. You can get local produce and try local independents in Yorkshire’s foodie capital.

There are small cafes like Patisserie Malton and Malton Relish that serve lovely cups of tea alongside trays of amazing cakes, for example, but this post isn’t about those. It’s about this wonderful find in Maton – FortySix.

FortySix Malton dishes

Food At FortySix

The FortySix menu offers a fantastic range of options, from hearty classics to modern twists. It’s one of the most exciting menus in Malton right now. There’s a small plate menu as well as sharing boards. There’s also plenty of vegetarian options, so you will get a good selection of food.

Brunch Menu

The brunch menu has sweet treats such as pancakes, sandwiches, soups and then your typical egg dishes. There are some lovely-looking ones on there!

Sunday Lunch

The Sunday lunch looks delicious! You get a sharing board with roast sirloin of beef, lamb shoulder wellington and loin of pork. It’s served with all the usual trimmings, such as Yorkshire puddings, roasted veg, and crispy potatoes, steal the show! Of course, there are vegetarian options!

Small Plates Menu

We went to FortySix on a Saturday evening, so we had the pleasure of their small plates menu. As it was called ‘small plates’ we decided to get the seafood sharing board to start.

This was delicious and had cheese & garlic baked queenie scallops, mini lobster Thermidor pot, prawn & sesame toast, fish & vegetable pakoras, salt & pepper squid & Whitby crab & caviar.

The scallops were so good, I could have eaten a whole plate. The lobster Thermidor pot was so good as well. It was served with bread to dip in, and was like a tasty lobster cheese fondue. The amount of food was fantastic value. I could have had it on my own as a main, and probably would have struggled. I think it would be good for three people as a starter. You never know with sharing boards how much you’re going to get!

As it was called a small plate menu, we decided to get a small plate each and two sides to share. Had we eaten the seafood board first, we probably would have just gotten a small plate each. The plates are a decent size – it’s basically like going to a restaurant where you have to get the sides separately.

My husband ordered hoisin-glazed mini pork ribs, sticky rice, sesame & soy dressing, which he said he could have eaten two times again. The pork just fell off the bone, leaving nothing behind. I had the slow-braised lamb arepas, which were Venezuelan style braised lamb shoulder, cornmeal flatbreads, minted yoghurt & spiced romesco dip. It was so good! You could tell it was made with fresh ingredients and could taste all the different flavours popping out as you ate.

For sides, we had the honey roasted root veg, toasted pumpkin seeds and truffle parmesan fries. They were really good, but I was too full to eat a lot of them!

We were surprised to find the bill only came to £70 for that food, two beers and a Coke. The quality of the food was insane for the price. I was expecting it to be over £100.

Lots of people kept getting turned away as they were fully booked, and you can see why.

FortySix Malton

The FortySix Malton menu

Before I get into what’s on the menu, it’s worth knowing that FortySix isn’t a traditional sit-down dinner restaurant. The format is brunch (Wednesday to Saturday, 9am–2:30pm), small plates in the evening (Thursday to Saturday, 5pm–8:30pm), and Sunday lunch (noon to 4pm with sittings at noon, 2pm and 4pm). They’re closed Monday and Tuesday. Once you’re across that, everything makes sense — it’s a relaxed, interesting place to eat rather than a formal evening-only dining room.

For brunch, the sticky chicken savoury waffle (£14.75) is the headline dish — soy and maple glazed chicken thighs, crispy bacon, avocado and a spinach and herb waffle with crispy shallots and peanuts. It sounds like a lot, but it works. The FortySix full English (£14.75) is everything it should be: bacon, sausage, fried egg, hash browns, homemade baked beans, mushrooms, grilled tomato and sourdough. Eggs Benedict comes three ways — ham (£11.50), avocado, halloumi and chorizo (£12.75), or smoked salmon (£13.50).

If you want something lighter, the avocado toast and poached egg (£11.25) is good, and the poke bowl (£10.50) with roasted beetroot, chickpeas, curried sweet potato and your choice of topping is a solid option. The pancake and waffle option (£13.50) rotates through flavours — milk chocolate and hazelnut, winterberry and toasted pecan, crispy bacon and maple syrup — depending on the season. There’s also a really good French onion soup (£8.95) if you’re after a warmer, savoury start.

For the evening small plates, the approach is order a few dishes and share. Most dishes sit between £5.50 and £14.75. The pork belly (£10.50) — slow braised with hoisin sauce and broccoli — is reliably good. The wild mushroom and spinach croquette (£9.50) with truffle mayo is a proper veggie option. The fish pakora (£9.50) with burnt lime and chilli sauce is worth trying. The lamb birria tacos (£11.95) — slow-cooked shoulder with chilli, cheddar and pickled onion — are brilliant when they’re on.

For something more substantial on a small plates evening, the sharing boards are good value: charcuterie (chorizo, Milano salami, prosciutto and Yorkshire coppa) or seafood (scallops, chilli king prawns, pakoras, salt and pepper squid and Whitby crab) at £22.75 each. Both come with brushettas, aioli, chutney and breads.

The Sunday lunch is a sharing board format — sittings at noon, 2pm and 4pm, so worth booking. Check their website for the current menu as it changes seasonally.

Service And Staff

If you look at other FortySix reviews, you’ll see a common theme: the staff are incredibly friendly and the service is top-notch. We were a little early to start with, so we were directed to the seating area around the back.

It was our first time visiting, and we’ve already recommended it to so many other people. We can’t wait for our next visit!

So if you’re looking for great food at reasonable prices, this lovely hidden gem may be the perfect place for you!

I really want to go back for the Sunday roast now!
