We love pizza, so on our last trip to Malton we headed to Pizza on the Square by SALT. Worth saying upfront — for somewhere billed as the food capital of Yorkshire, Malton can be surprisingly quiet on Sundays with a lot of places closed. Luckily this was open, and my picky three-year-old also loves pizza, so it worked out well.

When I first saw Pizza on the Square by SALT Malton, I was impressed with the old town hall building it’s in – there must be such rich history behind it! It’s stonework and grade II listing. Inside, natural lighting fills the space, making it warm and welcoming. There are big arched windows where you can look out at the square.
It’s a casual place, perfect for pizza lovers looking to relax and enjoy tasty pizzas in North Yorkshire. The bar team greets guests with smiles, ready to offer an extensive range of international gins or a pint of Ossett Brewery Group’s own Yorkshire Blonde. With cask ales like White Rat lining up alongside these options, there’s something for everyone.
Regular events keep the vibe lively; whether it’s quiz night or live music on Saturday evenings, this place knows how to keep its community engaged.

The signature sourdough pizza at Pizza on the Square by SALT Malton is a real treat. They use a secret recipe to make the perfect crust. It’s all about the finest ingredients, from fresh mozzarella to ripe tomatoes. The secret signature sourdough recipe ensures the base gets its unique taste and texture from being left to rise slowly. This gives each pizza an amazing flavour.
There are also the usuals on the pizza menu, plus smaller ones for kids. From classic Margherita to more adventurous toppings, there’s plenty of choice.

On our visit we ordered the Prosciutto Tartufa (garlic purée, mozzarella, mushroom, ham, rosemary and truffle oil) and the N’Duja (tomato, oregano, mozzarella, nduja spicy sausage, chilli and honey). Both were excellent — the Prosciutto Tartufa in particular, where the rosemary really comes through. There’s a kids’ Margherita option, which went down well with our three-year-old. Alongside the pizzas, the menu has Italian-style sandwiches — the rainbow sandwich (beetroot, hummus, roast peppers, rocket) is a solid vegan option. Sides and small plates round things out. The drinks menu includes cocktails, artisan wines, guest ales including Yorkshire Blonde from the Ossett Brewery Group, soft drinks, and fresh coffee.

Overall Dining Experience
We had a good casual dining experience at Pizza on the Square by SALT Malton. We ordered our drinks and food at the bar, though it did take quite a while to give the food to our table, despite it not seeming very busy.
I got the Prosciutto Tartufa – which was a pizza with garlic, puree, mozzarella, mushroom, ham, rosemary and truffle oil. It was so good, the rosemary worked so well! My husband got the N’Duja, which was tomato, oregano, mozzarella, nduja (spicy sausage), chilli and honey. My mother-in-law had the rainbow sandwich, a vegan option with beetroot, hummus, roast peppers and rocket. My little boy had the kids’ margarita.
The food was lovely, despite the wait. It was a great afternoon meal for us.
