Yak and Yeti York is a Gurkha restaurant in the beautiful city of York that we’ve had our eye on for a while. There are so many nice places to eat in York and we’re trying to try new ones rather than stick to the things we know. It’s York’s first authentic Nepalese restaurant right in the heart of the city.
Where to Find Yak and Yeti York
The Yak and Yeti Gurkha restaurant is at 63a Goodramgate, right in the heart of York city centre. You honestly can’t miss it when you’re wandering around the historic streets. They’re open 5-10pm most nights (til 10:30pm Friday and Saturday), but they’re closed on Sundays, so bear that in mind if you’re planning a weekend visit.
The good news? If you can’t get out, they deliver through Just Eat now! Though honestly, the atmosphere of eating in the restaurant is part of the experience.
About Yak and Yeti
Yak and Yeti is a Nepalese restaurant in York. The restaurant offers a wide variety of dishes from traditional Nepalese and Indian cuisine, including curries, tandoori dishes, momos (dumplings), and biryanis. They also have a selection of vegetarian and vegan options available.
With the Gurkha Signal Squadron based at Imphal Barracks only a mile away, it’s actually not as strange as you would think to find Nepalese food in the very British York. The Gurkha has served as part of the British army for over 200 years.
A funny story – it’s a family-run business and one of the people that work there lives next door to us! They often have family over and entertain in the garden and it always smells amazing! We should pay them to cook our meals, haha. I feel like it is meant to be – the owner once shared one of my reviews the same day as we had planned to go back and he came out and chatted with me for a bit, and then we end up living next door to them!
What Makes The Yak and Yeti Gurkha Restaurant Special?
Here’s the thing about Nepalese food – it’s not just ‘another curry house’. The flavours are different, the spices are used differently, and honestly, once you’ve tried proper Gurkha cuisine, you’ll understand why everyone raves about it. The restaurant has such close ties to the Gurkha community in York that you know it’s the real deal.
The chefs use authentic Nepalese spices and cooking methods, and you can really taste the difference. Everything is so fresh and full of flavour. It’s become one of our absolute favourite restaurants in York.
My Review of Yak and Yeti York – Gurkha Restaurant
For starters, I have steamed momo (similar to dumplings in a Chinese restaurant) and my boyfriend had Pork Bhutuwa. I have Everest Lamb for my main, I think my boyfriend had another pork dish. At first, the dish looked small but it really did fill us up!
The Everest Lamb is my absolute go-to dish at the Yak and Yeti Gurkha restaurant. I’ve literally ordered it every single time we’ve been (and we’ve been about 5 times now, maybe more?). It’s cooked with special Nepalese spices, and the lamb is so tender it just falls apart. The sauce is rich without being heavy, and the whole thing just… works. I can’t even explain it properly, you just have to try it! It comes with rice, and honestly, that combination alone makes me happy.
The lamb is so fresh. It’s so fresh, rich and tasty every single time.
They also offer chilli momos, but they are really hot!
The food was delicious and tasted so fresh. Full of flavour and not too spicy. Great value for money, too. Our meal with 2 beers, 2 starters and 2 mains came to around £60-70 (prices have gone up a bit since our first visit, but it’s still really reasonable for the quality you get). The service was a little slow, it seemed to take a while for someone to take our order. It was a Saturday night though and quite busy. Make sure you book if you want to go.

Yak and Yeti Cafe
So here’s something new since we first visited – they’ve opened a cafe! It’s at 1 Church Street (next to Mr Chippy, if you know where that is). This is perfect if you’re craving momos during the day and don’t want to wait until evening. The menu is more pared back than the restaurant, but the quality is just as good. We popped in for lunch once and the food was delicious – though we ate in complete silence which is always a sign the food is good, right?
It’s a more casual setup than the main restaurant, great for a quick lunch or if you’re exploring York during the day and fancy trying something different.
