Castle Howard Christmas Review: What to Expect from a Visit (2023 Neverland Theme)

Castle Howard is a stunning historic house in North Yorkshire. This year, the stately home has been transformed into a festive wonderland, whisking you off on a magical adventure to Neverland, the land where no one grows up. This festive event, led by the creative minds at CLW Event Design, is a special event filled with enchantment, excitement, and festive fun.

Castle Howard’s Christmas events are well-known and loved here in Yorkshire. I visited the house this week for the first time and it was such a magical Christmas experience. I have been to Castle Howard many times to visit the deli and farm shop, but I’ve never been inside the actual castle. 

Christmas at Castle Howard is like a fairytale Christmas. The castle is decorated in a fantastical festive world where its grand halls to its beautiful rooms are brought to life. There are Christmas trees, Christmas lights, stunning projections, and creative storytelling. Every year, there’s a different theme for the festive period. Last year it was Narnia, this year, the theme is Christmas in Neverland. It tells the story of J.M. Barrie’s beloved tale and lets you experience the magic of childhood adventures, fairies, pirates, and mermaids.

The Grand Entrance

As you step into Castle Howard, you’re greeted by the grand staircase. It is beautifully decorated with festive decorations and is the start of the journey to Neverland. It’s time to visit the magical world of Peter Pan, the Lost Boys and Captain Hook.

There are guides through the experience to tell you all about the history of the castle. The following rooms had narrow walkways, so there was a bit of a queue at the top of the stairs.  While we waited, a guide was telling us all about the history of the paintings on the wall and the china collection in the cabinet. 

​You then go down the corridor into the bedroom, starting the Mrs Darling’s bedroom, which is all decorated for Christmas Eve. 

Wendy, John, and Michael’s Room

Next is the nursery and the bedrooms of the Darling children – Wendy, John, and Michael. Soundscapes fill the rooms as you can hear them laughing, chatting, and one even refusing a bath. It adds to the atmosphere of being able to hear them chatter! The room is a mix of Edwardian Christmas charm and Neverland whimsy, with traditional decorations like paper chains adding a touch of nostalgia. There are loads of old toys that they would have played with, and plenty of treasure dotted about the rooms. 

There’s a doll’s house in here where you can see a little Tinkerbell fluttering around inside. There’s also an amazing projection on the ceiling of Peter Pan flying with some of the lost boys. 

The Great Hall

The Great Hall of Castle Howard is beautiful all year round, but during Christmas, the room is dominated by a massive Christmas tree. The tree is cut from the Castle Howard estate. It’s decorated beautifully with coloured ornaments including birds, bears, mushrooms, fairies, and more. This room was featured in Bridgerton! 

The Mermaid’s Lagoon

Next, you’ll find the Mermaid’s Lagoon. This room has wonderful lights and special effects, creating an illusion of a serene underwater world. The highlight of this room is the projection of a magical mermaid pool on the floor, complete with floating jellyfish lights. My son LOVED this. We spent quite a long time with him crouched down looking at the mermaid pool and giggling as fish, mermaids and other sea creatures swam around! 

The Lost Boy’s Feast

Next, you’ll step into the dining room where the Lost Boys’ Feast awaits. The table is decked out with an assortment of fun food, making it look like a childhood dream come true. Here, you’ll also get to see Tinkerbell in action, as she’s projected onto the paintings, flying around and causing a delightful mess. You can hear the lost boy’s laughter as they declare a food fight! It’s such a fun and festive atmosphere.

This was another highlight for my toddler; he loved watching Tinkerbell fly around and was pointing and laughing at her. 

Captain Hook’s Cabin & Shop

Next on the adventure is Captain Hook’s cabin. This room is filled with hooks and treasure. Then you moved onto the ship. The large room is decked out like a pirate ship. There are even projections on the windows that make it look like the rough sea outside, with Tinkerbell and Peter Pan flying around! 

The room is covered in more treasure and beautiful Christmas decorations. There’s a large projection here that shows a fight between Peter Pan and Tinkerbell. It was a couple of minutes long and another feature my son loved. We stayed and watched it again, he was fascinated and so happy to watch it! 

The Gift Shop & Marquee 

As your tour comes to an end, you’ll pass through the gift shop. Here, you’ll find a variety of Christmas decorations, many of them themed on Peter Pan. There’s a marque that has even more gifts to buy. I bought a little Tinkerbell Christmas ornament! 

There’s a large food court here. We had lunch here, and the service was very slow. That was the only negative thing about our day. It was cafeteria style, where they served you from hot plates. We ended up getting our food and just paying because the queue was so long for drink,s and the staff didn’t seem to know what they were doing. The place was only half full, too, so it must be a nightmare when it’s really busy! 

Meeting Father Christmas 

We didn’t meet Santa Claus and Castle Howard, as my son is seeing him at a different Christmas event. He’s seeing Father Christmas five times this year! It’s quite expensive to see him at Castle Howard, and the Neverland experience was already expensive enough. 

But if you want to meet him at Castle Howard, you can book to meet Father Christmas in the main House or Santa’s Grotto in the Stable Courtyard. It’s a great way to make some more magical memories.

Other Attractions

Beyond the themed rooms, Castle Howard has much more to offer. The estate has an adventure playground and a land train that takes you around the grounds. The Atlas Fountain is another must-see, and if you’re looking for a bite to eat, there are several food and drink options available on-site. There’s even a garden centre. 

Sustainability

One of the remarkable things about Christmas at Castle Howard is its commitment to sustainability. The decorations used in the rooms are made from recycled materials like paper and glass, and the team makes an effort to reuse previous decorations in different ways. This commitment to being eco-friendly adds another layer of magic to the event, knowing that your festive experience is also kind to the environment.

Supporting Great Ormond Street Hospital

By choosing the theme of Peter Pan, Castle Howard is honouring the legacy of J.M. Barrie, who gifted the rights to his story to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH Charity) in 1929. Visitors to Castle Howard have the opportunity to donate to GOSH Charity, continuing Barrie’s legacy of supporting seriously ill children.

A Christmas Adventure to Remember

We loved visiting Christmas in Neverland at Castle Howard. I am not a massive fan of Peter Pan, but I want to watch the movie again after seeing this! Going here was a great festive treat, and we would like to go again next year.
