Despite being cash-only (there is a cash machine very close by!), Helmsley Spice offers a wonderful dining experience. The staff is friendly and helpful, the food is delicious, and the quality of the meat is top-notch.

Tracy is no stranger to the area—she’s worked at renowned restaurants including The Fairfax Arms in Gilling, Byland Abbey, and owned the Hambleton Inn for close to 11 years. Her expertise really shows in the food.

The menu is carefully considered and not overwhelming, featuring classic dishes executed brilliantly. Reviewers rave about the lamb shank with mint gravy reduction, the sea bass (described as “the best I’ve ever tasted” by one Yorkshire Post reviewer), and generous portion sizes. This lovely little cafe is great for quick bites. Think sandwiches, scones, and a cup of coffee. I visited one cold winter morning and it was a cosy place to sit and have a chat with friends. We sat right next to an open fire to keep us warm. It had friendly service and a great atmosphere. Great if you’re looking for a light lunch or afternoon tea.
