Sushi Waka York is on George Hudson Street, opposite one of my favourite places to eat – Red Chilli.

I’ve never had proper sushi before. Only the type you get in supermarkets and that’s cooked fish so doesn’t really count.

Updated March 2026 – Sushi Waka York is still open on George Hudson Street and remains one of the few dedicated Japanese restaurants in York city centre. Always check their current opening hours before visiting as these can change. You can also order Sushi Waka on Deliveroo.

About Sushi Waka York

Sushi Waka is a Japanese restaurant in the centre of York, England. This restaurant offers a range of traditional Japanese dishes, including sushi, sashimi, bento boxes, and hot dishes.

One of the highlights of Sushi Waka is its sushi menu, which features a variety of fresh and expertly prepared sushi rolls, nigiri, and sashimi. The sushi is made with high-quality ingredients, including fresh fish, seafood, and vegetables, and is presented beautifully on traditional Japanese ceramic plates.

Sushi Waka is a casual and welcoming restaurant, with a traditional Japanese decor that includes a bamboo sushi bar and low tables with floor seating. Sushi Waka is ideal for a casual lunch or dinner with friends, as well as for special occasions and celebrations.

Sushi Waka York Review

My first thought about Sushi Waka is that the menu is really big! There are starters, sushi platters, bento boxes, different types of sushi and sashimi you can order, ramen bowls and more.

I wasn’t sure whether to get a ramen bowl and a plate of sushi rolls but then decided to get one of the platters that had a mix of everything on.

The service wasn’t brilliant and the beer is expensive! £5 for a 330ml bottle. When we ordered a drink with food, they forgot to bring the drinks and we had to ask for them again. Then the food came out at different times. I think they just had one sushi chef on and we were a big table of about 10. By the time the last people got their order, I had eaten mine! It meant we sat waiting for a long time and spent about 3 hours there altogether.

The sushi was really nice though, apart from the fact I put too much wasabi on as usual. I never learn!

I’d recommend Sushi Waka York for smaller groups — two to four people is ideal. When we went as a group of ten, the kitchen clearly struggled with the volume and food came out at very different times, meaning some people had finished before others were even served. On a smaller visit I think it would be a much more relaxed experience. The sushi itself was genuinely good, and for authentic Japanese food in York, Sushi Waka is hard to beat.

Final Thoughts on Sushi Waka York

Sushi Waka York is worth visiting if you want proper Japanese food in York — the sushi is genuinely good and the menu is one of the most varied in the city. The main caveat is group size: go with one or two other people and you’ll have a much smoother experience than we did with a table of ten. Service can lag when they’re busy, but the food makes up for it. If you’re a sushi fan and haven’t been yet, it’s worth making the trip down George Hudson Street.

  1. Oh it looks good! What a shame that the service isn’t the best though, that would be frustrating to be stuck in a restaurant so long, especially if you had other plans!

Hope you are having a good weekend 🙂 We are having a quiet one to recover from our busy week!
