During our many Whitby trips, we have walked passed Sanders Yard Bistro on Church Street. On our latest trip to the North Yorkshire coastal town, we decided to visit Sanders Yard for breakfast.
The thing that attracted me to Sander’s Yard was it’s breakfast and brunch menu – it looked delicious and they even catered for vegans. I spent an hour or so on TripAdvisor before this trip to look at the top places to have breakfast in Whitby and many places in the Top 10 list either didn’t have a menu online I could look at, or didn’t have anything specifically for vegans.
During my post about the best places to have breakfast in York, I had this same problem. It’s just things like having avocado and eggs on toast, but no vegan version such as avocado and tomato or mushrooms. Not having vegan sausages even though lots of vegan sausages exist – stop using Quorn sausages for the vegetarian option that contains eggs.
Anyway, I could rant about this for days. But Sander’s Yard caters for vegans so I wanted to try it, even though it wasn’t named the top place to eat breakfast in Whitby.

Our Breakfast At Sanders Yard
Sander’s Yard opened for breakfast at 9:15 am, we go there at about 9:20 am and there were already a few people seated. It wasn’t long before all the seats were taken and people were eating on the al fresco dining area outside.
Tables were full all through our time there, so I recommend getting there first thing in the morning or booking a table if you want to eat there during the peak tourist season.

I ordered the vegan breakfast with a side of smashed avocado and a decaf tea. The vegan breakfast included: falafel, hash brown, mushrooms, tomato and baked beans with your choice of toast and preserves
My husband ordered breakfast bruschetta with spiced smashed avocado, black pudding and poached eggs and normal tea.

For the little one, we ordered beans on toast.
The food didn’t take too long to arrive. The service was good and the staff was lovely. We all enjoyed our food and the only gripe was with the brown sauce.
I don’t know what it is about the brown sauce in Whitby, but I had this issue at Monks Haven Cafe – they have these sachets of brown sauce and kitchen that are probably the worst I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. I’d rather buy HP sauce than eat that. It is not good!
