Right by Whitby Abbey in the North Yorkshire town of Whitby, Whitby Brewery has been quenching the thirst of ale enthusiasts since 2013. Its mission is simple: bring craft brewing back to Whitby.
Whitby Brewery produces a variety of craft beers with distinct flavours and aromas, this place is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates quality brews.

Our Visit to Whitby Brewery
We have been to Whitby Brewery many times. We first found it in 2018 after walking up the steps on the Abbey.
Whitby Brewery sells its own brews on tap as well as having some for sale in bottles to take away. You can also get a very small selection of wine and spirits if beer isn’t your thing.
There’s a seating area in the actual brewery, mostly beer kegs with cushions and pallets for tables. There’s an outside area with picnic tables that has views of Whitby Abbey for when the weather is warmer.

On our first visit in 2018, I tried Saltwick Nap to start, which I loved and it was very easy to drink. I had half a pint of Jet Black after that, which is a darker ale. I wasn’t a massive fan of this as I don’t like dark ales, but the description made me want to give it a go.
We ended up buying a box of 3 to take away from the Whitby Brewery shop. and have been back many times since. The Abbey Blonde became my firm favourite but I gave up drinking. Now I just enjoy a coke and a packet of Scampi Fries.
Whitby Brewery Beers
Whitby Abbey Brewery’s list of beers is as diverse as it is intriguing. From the dark, coffee-infused Jet Black Porter to the light and zesty Abbey Blonde ale, the selection caters to various preferences.
Jet Black Porter
The Jet Black Porter is a finely balanced dark beer packed with flavours of liquorice, coffee, and toffee. With an ABV of 4.5% and an IBU of 35, this beer has won over enthusiasts with its rich taste and smooth finish.
Whitby Whaler
Known for its well-rounded taste, the Whitby Whaler is a bitter session beer with a malty flavour and a delicately dry finish. With an ABV of 4% and an IBU of 30, it’s a favourite among those who enjoy a traditional bitter.
Abbey Blonde
The Abbey Blonde is a light blonde ale that leaves a zesty finish on the palate. It has a refreshingly hoppy aroma and an ABV of 3.8%, making it a great choice for those looking for a light yet flavourful beer.

Lager No. 9
This Helles lager bears witness to the brewery’s journey in perfecting their lager recipe. Lager No. 9 is the result of their ninth attempt, delivering a clean and crisp taste with an ABV of 4.7%.
Fossil Fuel
Fossil Fuel is a modern hazy IPA that uses a unique blend of American and English hop varieties. With an ABV of 4.8% and a low IBU of 17, Fossil Fuel provides a refreshing and slightly bitter taste that IPA enthusiasts will love.
Pizza at Whitby Brewery
Whitby Brewery Tap has recently installed a pizza oven in the Brewery and between 1 pm – 7 pm, you can order a small selection of pizzas and garlic bread that are cooked right there in the brewery. I got a mushroom pizza and my husband had the prosciutto pizza. It was a fairly busy day, with plenty of people ordering pizzas and it took about 30 minutes to come.
It was delicious, as you would expect from pizza cooked inside a real pizza oven.
