I don’t mean to brag, but I’m an expert at online dating. I met my partner on Tinder almost 10 years ago. We are now married, have a child, and own a home together. If that doesn’t make me qualified for giving out dating advice and dishing out first-date outfit ideas, then I don’t know what does!

Let’s not talk about all the failed dates I had been on before him..
Online dating is BRUTAL. I’m not going to lie. It wasn’t all fun. The majority of dates I went on were okay, but there just wasn’t a spark. Which I know sounds so TYPICAL, and I hate that saying. There’s no spark.
I mean, there doesn’t have to be a spark on the first date; that can develop later. But I think you know pretty quickly if you want to spend more time with a person to see where it goes.
I did get hurt a couple of times, and there were also a few disasters. Such as being catfished by someone who was about 10 years older than he said he was. A date with a lawyer who just didn’t speak and answered YES or NO to every question. A date with a shepherd who was funny as hell, but probably on drugs and then there was the guy who was dating someone else, picked her, then decided he wanted to go travelling so ended it with her and got back in touch to see if I was up for a bit before he left.
I was not.
Oh, I guess we are talking about the disaster dates I’ve been on. Okay, maybe I’m not successful at dating but I am certainly experienced in first dates with someone you’ve met online.
It’s scary to meet a stranger. If you’ve been talking for a while, you have high hopes. Sometimes the person you meet seems different to how you expected. Their personality on text doesn’t match up to the real thing. You use your head to fill in the gaps to dream up this amazing person, and you’re kind of.. disappointed. That’s why I always tried to meet up with someone quick. It stops you from falling in love with the idea of a person before actually meeting the person.
Anyway, I need to get back to the point.
What to Wear on a First Date: The Ultimate Guide
Choosing what to wear on a first date can feel almost as nerve-wracking as the date itself! But here’s the thing: the perfect first date outfit should tick three boxes—comfortable, confident, and appropriate for the venue.
Consider Where You’re Going
Before you start ransacking your wardrobe, think about the type of date you’re going on:
Coffee Date: These are casual and low-pressure. Think jeans with a cute top, trainers or ankle boots, and a cardigan or denim jacket. It’s daytime, it’s relaxed, no need to go full glam.
Drinks or Cocktail Bar: This is where you can have a bit more fun! A nice dress or smart-casual separates work brilliantly. You’re usually sitting down, so focus on looking good from the waist up.
Dinner Date: If it’s somewhere fancy, opt for a dressier outfit—a cocktail dress or smart trousers with a silky blouse. If it’s casual like pizza, keep it relaxed but polished.
Activity Date (bowling, mini golf, cinema): Comfort is KEY here. Jeans, a cute top, and trainers are perfect. You want to be able to move around without worrying about your outfit.
Walk in the Park: Casual and comfortable all the way. Think jeans, a nice jumper, and comfortable shoes. Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly!
The worst thing you can do is overdress for a coffee date and feel awkward, or underdress for a fancy restaurant and feel out of place. When in doubt, ask where you’re going!
The Science Behind First Date Outfit Colours
Alright, here’s where it gets interesting. Did you know there’s actual psychological research about what colours to wear on a first date?
Studies analysing the British TV show “First Dates” found that contestants wore significantly more red and black during their dates compared to their pre-date interviews. And this pattern held true across all genders and sexual orientations!
Red is associated with passion, romance, and confidence. Research shows that both men and women are perceived as more attractive when wearing red, and they also feel more attractive themselves. It’s the colour of love, after all! However, some studies suggest red can also be seen as slightly attention-seeking or intense, so it’s a bold choice.
Black is even more popular than red for first dates. It’s associated with sexiness, sophistication, intelligence, and confidence. Black clothing makes you look polished and put-together without trying too hard. Plus, it goes with everything and is universally flattering.
Colours to avoid? Yellow and orange tend to rank poorly in dating psychology studies. Yellow is seen as more of a friendship colour (think yellow roses!) rather than romantic. Orange can come across as too attention-grabbing or “construction worker vibes” according to some fashion psychologists. Grey can seem too serious and business-like, potentially killing the flirty atmosphere.
That said, if yellow or orange makes YOU feel incredible, wear it! Confidence trumps everything else.
First Date Outfit Rules
I’m a big believer in wearing outfits that you love and feel amazing in! Too many times I’ve bought a dress but I’ve not been entirely happy with how it looks. Then I feel rubbish wearing it. After one wear, it’s in the wardrobe for the rest of its life until it finds its way into a charity bag.
Always wear something that you love!
Here are my golden rules for first date dressing:
- Wear something you’ve worn before. This is NOT the time to test out a brand new outfit. You don’t know if it’ll ride up, if the straps will fall down, if you’ll be tugging at it all night. Stick with tried and tested pieces that you know fit well and make you feel good.
- Prioritise comfort. If your shoes are killing your feet or your top keeps gaping, you’ll spend the entire date thinking about your outfit instead of your date. Choosing supportive options such as comfortable Brooks shoes for flat feet can help you stay relaxed and confident throughout the evening.
- Show your personality. Your outfit should reflect who you are, not who you think your date wants you to be. If you’re a jeans-and-trainers person, don’t suddenly show up in a cocktail dress. They’re meeting YOU, so dress like yourself—just the polished version.
- Don’t buy something new just for the date. If you feel like you need a completely new outfit, ask yourself: are you trying to be someone you’re not? Your date should like you as you are. Plus, wearing something from your existing wardrobe means you already know you love it!
- Think about practicalities. Will you be outside? Is it cold? Might it rain? Can you actually sit down comfortably in that skirt? Will you be sweating in that jumper? These things matter!
- Keep it simple. Solid colours and classic styles tend to work better than busy patterns or super trendy pieces. You want your date focusing on YOU and your sparkling personality, not being distracted by your outfit.
Anyway, the first date outfits guys love most are the ones that exude confidence and style – and how do you get confidence? Wear something you love!
My First Date Outfit
For my first date with my partner, I wore a black dress that sat on my shoulders with a pair of cute tights that had dark blue shimmery lace detail. Plus a belt, because we all know I love a belt. And bam! A cute outfit that I feel great in. This was my first date dress for my previous few dates.
For the second date, I wore my favourite tartan dress, which absolutely does not fit me right now, and I cry. Plus my lovely leather jacket,t which has now fallen apart and has gone in the bin because I wore it so much.
These photos are of terrible quality, but they’re from the 4th of September 2016 and the 11th of September 2016. My first two dates were with my current partner. AuThEnTiC.

And yes, that tartan dress is the perfect tartan dress from a post I wrote about three years before, I’ve had this dress 8 years and love it as a first date outfit!
While we are here, let’s take a look at it and cry at my pre-pregnancy body!

Enough about me, now let’s talk about you.
So, you’re going on that first date, and you are not sure what to wear, and you’ve come to the internet for some first date outfit ideas.
I’m a dress kind of girl, so each of these outfit ideas features a dress. I’ve just never really been a ‘jeans and a nice top’ kind of girl. I really hate jeans and trousers. I just feel so much better in a dress! They’re comfortable, easy and you can usually change a dress from casual to dressy just by removing a cardigan and adding heels and accessories.
If you are researching first date dress ideas before your next date, then take a gander at these date outfits! Don’t spend hours browsing online for date dress ideas, just read this post. Click each image to take you to where you can buy it!
First Date Outfit Ideas for 2026

First date outfit 1: Floral Midi Dress
A dress with a floral print is always a great idea for a casual first date outfit. My favourite! I’ve actually bought this dress a couple of weeks ago. I love this! It’s a typical outfit for me and is a cute look for a date on a nice sunny day! They have it in a midi and a mini version. I have the longer one as I am a mum now. I used to always have shorter dresses but since being pregnant, I’ve got into maxi/midi dresses and I think they are here to stay!
Perfect for: Coffee dates, lunch dates, daytime drinks, walks in the park
Style it: Pair with white trainers or sandals for daytime, or dress it up with heeled sandals and a clutch for evening drinks. Add a denim jacket if it’s chilly.

First date outfit idea: Little Black Dress
You cannot go wrong with a simple black dress! This one has cute detail on the back and is sure to make a great first impression. It’s a safe option if you’re not feeling very confident as it’s not too out there. It’s flirty in a subtle way but still classy.
Remember, research shows that black is the most popular colour for first dates across all genders and sexualities. It makes you appear sophisticated, sexy, and confident—three qualities you definitely want to project on a first date!
Perfect for: Evening cocktails, dinner dates, bar meetups
Style it: Wear with heels and minimal jewellery for an elegant look. Add tights if it’s cold. A leather jacket or blazer can add edge or polish depending on your vibe.

First date outfit idea 3: Blue Midi Dres
This is a stunning outfit! Another midi dress perfect for a summer day in a beer garden. I love the colour and think it’s a cute first date outfit! You can pair this with the bag I’ve picked and flat sandals for a casual look, or add heels and a handbag for a more dressy feel. It’s a bit of a girl next door vibe, but great for a casual first date.
Blue is considered a trustworthy and calming colour, plus it’s universally flattering. It gives off approachable and friendly vibes without being too intense.
Perfect for: Beer gardens, casual restaurants, outdoor summer dates
Style it: Keep it relaxed with flat sandals and a crossbody bag, or elevate it with wedges and statement earrings.

First date outfit idea 4: Black Floral Dress
Another black dress option. The floral print softens it and makes it a nice smart-casual option. The necktie is a cute detail. Another flexible outfit idea for both daytime (this would work well for a coffee date!) or nighttime meetups!
This is a brilliant compromise if you want the sophistication of black but the softness of florals. It’s versatile enough for multiple date scenarios.
Perfect for: Coffee dates, afternoon drinks, early dinner
Style it: Ankle boots and a cardigan for daytime, or heels and a clutch for evening.

First date outfit idea: Leopard Print Dress
I love this leopard print dress, leopard print never seems to go out of fashion! Although leopard print is quite a sexy print, the cut is cute and softens it a bit to make it perfect for a first date! I think this would look great paired with a leather jacket and some accessories!
Leopard print is bold and shows you’ve got personality. If you’re confident and want to stand out, this is your dress.
Perfect for: Evening drinks, bar dates, cocktail lounges
Style it: Black heels, a leather jacket, and statement jewellery. Keep makeup relatively simple to balance the print.

First date outfit idea 6: Red Midi Dress
I couldn’t write a first date outfit ideas post without including a red dress! I love the chiffon fabric, making this a flowy but sexy dress to wear on a first date. Red is the colour of love, after all! So why not just go for it? It’s flirty but sophisticated! What’s not to love? This would make the perfect dinner date dress.
As the psychological research shows, red makes you appear more attractive to your date AND makes you feel more confident yourself. It’s associated with passion and romance—perfect for a first date where you want to make an impression!
Perfect for: Dinner dates, fancy restaurants, romantic evenings
Style it: Nude or black heels, delicate jewellery, a clutch bag. Let the dress be the star of the show.

First Date Hair and Makeup Tips
Now you’ve got your first date dress ideas sorted, you just need to decide on your hair and makeup!
For daytime/casual dates: Keep makeup natural and fresh. Think light foundation, a bit of mascara, natural brows, and a nude or pink lip. Hair can be relaxed—loose waves, a natural blow-dry, or even a sleek ponytail.
For evening/fancy dates: You can go a bit more dramatic. A smoky eye or bolder lip works well in darker settings. Research suggests that heavy makeup can sometimes make you seem less warm or relatable, so find a balance. You want to look like an elevated version of yourself, not someone completely different.
General rule: Your date should be able to recognise you from your photos! Don’t go so heavy on the makeup that you look like a different person.
What NOT to Wear on a First Date
Just as important as knowing what TO wear is knowing what to avoid:
- Brand new, untested outfits – You don’t know if they’ll be comfortable
- Anything that requires constant adjustment – Straps that fall, skirts that ride up, tops that gape
- Overly revealing clothing – Unless that’s genuinely your style, save the super low-cut or ultra-short pieces for later dates
- Clothes that don’t match the venue – Trainers to a fancy restaurant or a cocktail dress to a coffee shop
- Heavy perfume or cologne – You’ll be in close quarters, and strong scents can be overwhelming
- Uncomfortable shoes you can’t walk in – If you’re tottering and wobbling, it’s not a good look
- Anything with visible stains or damage – Goes without saying, really!

The Bottom Line on First Date Outfits
Here’s what really matters: wear something that makes YOU feel confident and comfortable. All the colour psychology and fashion rules in the world won’t help if you’re tugging at your clothes all night or feeling self-conscious.
Your outfit should:
- ✅ Fit the venue and activity
- ✅ Make you feel like the best version of yourself
- ✅ Be comfortable enough that you forget you’re wearing it
- ✅ Reflect your actual personality and style
And remember, if someone doesn’t like you because of your outfit choice, they’re probably not the right person for you anyway. The right person will be charmed by YOU, not just your dress.
Now get out there and have a brilliant first date! And please, for the love of God, meet up quickly before you build them up in your head to be Prince Charming when they’re actually… well, a shepherd on drugs. (Still not over that one, tbh.)
