When we heard there was a new House of Trembling Madness opening in York, we heard rumours that the old Trembling Madness was closing so Betty’s could expand into it. It opened in June and I am very happy to report that the old Trembling Madness on Stonegate still exists! I would recommend the original Stonegate site to anyone visiting York. Click my Trembling Madness review and just take a look at how amazing that building is!
House of Trembling Madness, Lendal
The New House of Trembling Madness on Lendal is in York. The building itself is an old Tudor-style house that dates back to the 12th century, and it has a distinctive atmosphere with its wooden beams, stone walls, and antique decor.
The House of Trembling Madness is known for its extensive beer selection, with over 500 different beers available from around the world, including many rare and hard-to-find varieties. They also offer a range of other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, including wines, ciders, and soft drinks.
The bar also serves food, with a menu featuring a range of traditional British dishes, as well as some international options. They do picky boards of cheese, chutney, pork pies, scotch eggs and meats.
The House of Trembling Madness has a shop on the lower level, where visitors can purchase bottles of the various beers they offer, as well as other merchandise such as glassware and gift items.
There’s a craft beer bar on the ground floor that offers 11 kegs, 3 casks and Yorkshire-inspired Pintxos, alongside their usual menu & specials boards. The first floor has another craft beer bar with a further 11 kegs, a huge range of spirits, full menu including specials. There’s also a private hire room for events.
Our visit to Trembling Madness
I would say we made a mistake by sitting downstairs in Trembling Madness as it had more of the feel of a cafe than an actual bar. Upstairs had a much more ‘old British pub’ feel with grandfather clocks and old furniture everywhere. I have to admit I do prefer the original bar, but this is a nifty spot that sells a variety of different beers to try if you’re a craft beer lover.
Our latest trip to House of Trembling Madness was in 2021 (I’m updating this post now!) and we went around midday for a coffee and something to eat. We enjoyed lovely bacon sandwiches on fresh crunchy bread and a coffee. Our weaning baby enjoyed the bread, too!
We have been a few times to this Trembling Madness York now. Although I prefer the original Trembling Madness on Stonegate, this one has more seating. They do great coffee and bacon sandwiches, too!
The food looks tasty!
