Updated March 2026 – This post has been updated with a full guide to the Barry M lip liner range, shades, tips for using lip liner, and FAQs. The original review from 2015 is kept below — it holds up, honestly.

About Barry M Lip Liners

Barry M lip liners are one of the best affordable options on the high street. They’re available in a range of shades to suit both everyday and bolder lip looks, and they sit at a price point that makes buying multiple shades actually realistic — typically around £4–£5 each. The Barry M lip liner pencil formula is designed to be creamy enough to apply smoothly without dragging, but firm enough to draw a clean line. The range covers nudes, pinks, berries, reds, and deeper plum shades, so there’s something whether you’re going for a subtle daytime look or a full evening lip. Barry M lip liners are widely available at Superdrug, Boots, and ASOS, as well as directly from barrym.com.

The Barry M Lip Liner Shade Range

Barry M produces lip liners in a rotating range of shades. Core shades typically include: Nude and pink tones — perfect for pairing with nude lipsticks or giving a natural, defined look. These work well if you want to slightly overdraw the lips for a fuller effect. Berry and mulberry shades — deeper pinks and plums that work brilliantly with bold lip colours. Shade 9 in Mulberry is the one I tried first and it’s a good all-rounder for anyone who wears Rimmel or Barry M’s own deeper lip shades. Red tones — a true red liner is worth having if you wear red lipstick regularly, as it stops the colour bleeding and keeps the line sharp throughout the day. Check barrym.com or Superdrug for the current shade range as Barry M updates their lineup regularly with seasonal additions.

How to Use Barry M Lip Liners

If you’re new to lip liner the way I was when I wrote this post, here’s what I’ve learnt since 2015: Start with a lip liner shade that matches either your lip colour or your lipstick. Going too dark is the thing most people get wrong — unless you’re deliberately going for a defined contrast look. Line your lips first, then fill in with your lipstick. This gives the colour something to grip to and helps it last longer. You can also fill in your entire lip with liner before applying lipstick on top — this acts as a base coat and makes a huge difference to staying power, especially with lighter, creamier lipsticks that tend to fade quickly. If you want to make your lips look slightly fuller, line just outside your natural lip line at the cupid’s bow and the centre of the bottom lip. Keep it subtle or it reads as obvious. Barry M lip liners are soft enough to blend with a fingertip or lip brush if you want a more diffused, blurred edge rather than a sharp line.

I’ve never bothered with lip liner before. But since I started experimenting a bit more with lip products, I started to feel like I should get one.

If I’m honest, I wasn’t sure what to look for when buying my first one. I just went with a well known highstreet brand, picked a colour closest to my favourite shade of Provocolips, and hoped for the best.

I somehow managed to buy two different brands by accident. But not to worry, I guess the other one will be good for reviewing. They’re basically the same shade, too. I don’t remember ordering both of them. Maybe I was drunk. Or maybe I’m just an idiot.

Now we’ve that out of the way. This Barry M Lipliner is in shade 9 – Mulberry.

It’s advertised as a creamy textured liner that’s firm enough to draw a line but easily blendable. Which sounded like what I wanted. I think. I don’t know. I’m just winging this. Can you tell? Lololololol. BEST REVIEW EVER. Please don’t unfollow me. People keep doing that lately. I don’t know if it’s because I’m so wank at reviews or just a dick. Or maybe it’s because my comp ended.

Now I’ve made this awkward, haven’t I?

Let’s just let the pictures do the talking, shall we.

Here is my face with no liner. Then a picture of my face with liner + lippy.

This stays on for around 4 hours before you can’t see it anymore. It probably wouldn’t have been so obvious if I hadn’t have worn it with Provocolips, which basically stays on until you peel it off with acid.

Are Barry M Lip Liners Worth It?

Yes — for the price, Barry M lip liners are hard to fault. They apply well, the shade range is good, and at around £4–£5 they’re cheap enough to buy a few shades without it feeling like a commitment. They’re not going to outlast a MAC lip liner, but for everyday wear they do the job and then some. The staying power on my Mulberry liner was around 4 hours on its own — longer when used under a long-wearing lipstick. If you’re pairing it with something like Provocolips (which I was back in 2015 and still rate), the liner honestly doesn’t need to do much work because the lipstick does most of the lasting. For a first lip liner or a backup shade, Barry M is the one I’d recommend to anyone who doesn’t want to spend MAC money.

FAQs About Barry M Lip Liners

Barry M lip liners are available at Superdrug, Boots, ASOS, and directly from barrym.com. They’re one of the most widely stocked affordable lip liner brands in the UK.

How much do Barry M lip liners cost?

Typically around £4–£5 each. Prices may vary by retailer and with promotional offers — Superdrug and Boots regularly run Barry M deals.

What shades do Barry M lip liners come in?

The range covers nudes, pinks, berries, reds, and deeper plum shades. The range does update seasonally so check barrym.com for the current shade selection.

How long do Barry M lip liners last?

Around 3–4 hours on their own. Lasting power increases significantly when used under a long-wearing lipstick or when used to fill in the whole lip as a base before applying colour on top.

Are Barry M lip liners good for beginners?

Yes — the soft, creamy formula makes them forgiving to apply, and the affordable price means you’re not precious about making mistakes. A good first lip liner choice.

Do Barry M lip liners need sharpening?

Yes, they’re traditional pencil format and need a standard cosmetic sharpener. Keep them sharp for a clean line — a blunt tip makes precise application much harder.

  1. Ugh aren’t unfollowers the worst? I wish that didn’t ruin my day, but it really does. I have one thing of lip liner in a nude color from NYX…I should probably get more because lip liner is so hot right now…

  3. That’s a nice color! I find my lip color always lasts longer when I use liner. My favorite is Kevyn Aucoin Medium liner cause it goes with practically any lip color.

  5. I like the colour on you! I wasn’t a lip liner user for years and now it’s just one more thing I need. I really like Nyx ones, they’re cheap and have a really good range. 🙂

  6. I honestly haven’t bothered with too many lip liners myself but the colour is pretty! heheh, but the staying power for it is really bad I think? or maybe I’m wrong I have no clue about the staying power for lip liners :p so excuse me for that one!
I’ve only used the Sleek Lip liner but that one wasn’t for me 😛

  8. Haha your posts are so funny Corinne 🙂 They are one of the reasons I love reading your blog. This lip liner is a fab colour on you

  9. Hmm I’ve heard of a few different ways you can use lip liner. 1. Line your lips and then put on the lipstick. 2. Fill in lips with lip liner and then add lipstick 3. add lipstick and then line lips. I like the last one the best because it evens out the lines from the lipstick! There are my tips for lip liner 😛

  10. This looks great, I have one of their liners in red and it stays ok, but of course I use it with Lime Crime & that stuff stays until you rip it off your lips, so who knows how long it lasts. But, this colour looks great on you 🙂 x

  11. I had a really good laugh, thanks for that! I mean, I got into lip pencils as well lately, but don`t know what to expect from them. I normally use the Rimmel Lasting finish ones, but this looks very pretty as well. Do they have a good variety of shades?

  12. Gah, I don’t think we have Barry M here in Canada or I haven’t seen it! And don’t you change the way you blog, write, I love you just the way you are!

And yes, hate unfollowers after the competition ends. Makes me roll me damn eyes to the back of my head.

  13. I don’t know if it’s just me or what but the color looks a lot more pinkish on your hands than on your lips, either way it looks good!

  14. Honestly, I only use the Rimmel London liners. I’m too cheap to buy any high end liners.. or any brand for that matter haha. I only have one lip liner at a time. If I want a new one, then I buy another, but not til I finish the one I already have.

  15. I don’t have one, though like you, now i’ve got a few lippies under my belt feel I should get one. But I said that months ago and here we are. It’s not top of my list but i’m sure eventually i’ll get round to purchasing one! x
