When we think about home upgrades, we usually focus on how things look or perhaps how to make them more convenient to use and so on – and of course, there’s always the fact that we’ll want to increase the property value, and that can definitely be another good reason to upgrade a few things here and there. However, there’s something to remember – your home isn’t just where you live – it’s your safe space, and the changes you make can actually have a massive impact on your mental health and wellbeing.

The great thing about upgrading your home is that it can create a fantastically calming environment, reduce stress, or even improve your mood, and that’s all very positive, so with that in mind, keep reading to find out more about the unexpected ways home upgrades can boost your mental health.

A Cozy Space That Reduces Stress

Imagine stepping into a warm, welcoming space at the end of a busy, perhaps not very fun, day – wouldn’t that be lovely? Upgrades that focus on comfort and making your home nice and cozy can definitely help give you a place to unwind and de-stress, and even if you think you don’t need that, you probably do (or will at some point anyway).

You can start this whole process with something simple, like changing your current harsh lighting for something softer, and perhaps even add a dimmer to make things easier to manage. Then you can also add layers of textures like plush throws or a fluffy rush (and don’t forget the plump cushions!) and that’s really going to boost how comfy things are at home.

After that you can move onto bigger upgrades like a modern boiler installation that can keep your heating at a reliable and consistent level when you need it – that’s not just something that will physically keep your home warm, but it will also reduce your stress because you know it’s not going to break down at the worst possible (coldest) moment, so it’s good for many reasons.

Natural Light And Fresh Air Boost The Mood

Light is a really powerful tool to use in your home when you want to improve your mental health – sunlight is amazing because it triggers the release of serotonin (the feel-good hormone) and that boosts your mood right away – never a bad thing.

If you don’t get a lot of natural light in your home, is there a way you could upgrade your windows or maybe add a skylight to let more in? If that’s not an option, what about strategically placing mirrors around the place to make more of the light you do have? And if you combine that kind of thing with some sliding doors or a nicer outdoor space, you can have better access to fresh air as well, which goes nicely hand in hand with more light to give you a lighter, airier home that leaves you feeling refreshed and re-energized every day – that’s got to be worth doing.

Decluttering And Storage Solutions Clear The Mind

Clutter is a real eyesore, and that’s bad enough, but worse than that, it causes stress – a messy home can lead to a messy mind, and that means you won’t be able to properly focus or relax. Upgrading your storage solutions can change everything and do wonders for your mental health and clarity, so it should make its way onto your to-do list (and potentially be a priority) sooner rather than later.

Although decluttering and storing things might seem like a hard job to do at first, you’ll soon find there are plenty of options when it comes to storage that can help you massively, like built-in shelving, clever under-bed storage, multipurpose furniture, or even renting a storage unit away from your home if it comes to it – just getting the stuff out of your house so you can focus on improving it can be a great start and really make a difference.

Plus, the act of decluttering itself can actually be quite therapeutic, and you’ll get a great sense of control and accomplishment which can motivate you to do more and feel better.

Improve The Bathroom

There are lots of rooms in your home that can make a difference and boost your mental health when they’re done right, but if you want to know where to start, it’s probably your bathroom. After all, who doesn’t love a spa day? And with a few upgrades, that’s what you can have at home.

One good idea would be to add a rain shower, as well as heated towel rails or a deep tub to soak in – how relaxing would those things make the room? Even small touches like scented candles or aromatherapy diffusers, as well as fluffy towels and luxurious bath products can make you feel good, and they’re a great place to start (and enjoyable too).
