Every year, without fail, I find myself doing the same thing. Standing in the kitchen the night before the last day of term, staring at a blank card, trying to think of something meaningful to write.
It’s not that I don’t appreciate the teachers. I really do — enormously. Teaching a classroom full of small children every day, managing all those different personalities and learning styles and needs, sending them home slightly more capable than they arrived. It’s a lot. And I want to say thank you properly. But somehow “thank you for everything” just doesn’t quite cover it, and anything longer starts to feel like I’m writing an essay.
So this is the list I wish I’d had. Fifty messages and quotes for teachers — short ones for cards, longer ones if you want to write something more, a few specifically for nursery teachers and TAs, and some that your child can help choose themselves.
UK schools mostly break up in mid-to-late July, so if you’re here in June or early July, you’re perfectly timed.

Short thank you quotes for teachers (card-sized)
These are the ones that fit in a card without spilling over the sides. A line or two, genuine, done.
- “Thank you for making school somewhere my child loves to be.”
- “You’ve made such a difference this year. We’re so grateful.”
- “Thank you for your patience, your kindness, and everything in between.”
- “A good teacher is hard to find and impossible to forget.”

Heartfelt thank you messages for teachers
For when you want to say a bit more — in a letter, a longer card, or a note tucked in with a gift.
- “I don’t think teachers hear this enough: you genuinely changed things for us this year. The confidence my child has found in your classroom — in themselves, in learning, in just turning up — has been remarkable to watch. Thank you for being that kind of teacher.”
- “At the start of the year I wasn’t sure how he’d settle in. You made it easy. You noticed things, remembered things, were endlessly patient when it took a while for things to click. I can’t thank you enough for that.”
- “You have one of the hardest jobs I can imagine. You do it every day, mostly without thanks, for a room full of people who are still learning what gratitude is. I see you. We’re grateful.”
- “Some teachers teach a subject. You’ve taught my child that they’re capable. That matters so much more.”
- “Thank you for the way you talk to children — like they’re worth listening to, like their ideas matter, like they’re already the people they’re going to become. That’s a rare thing.”
- “End of term always sneaks up on me and I find myself feeling a bit emotional about it, which I wasn’t expecting. I think it’s because the year has been so good. That’s down to you.”
- “My child has spent more waking hours with you than with me this year. The fact that they come home happy, curious and kind tells me everything I need to know. Thank you.”
- “You took a child who was nervous about school and turned them into one who cries when term ends. I mean that as the highest possible compliment.”
Funny and lighthearted teacher thank you messages
For the teachers with a sense of humour, or when you want to keep it warm but not too serious.
- “Thank you for returning my child in one piece at the end of every day.”
- “You have the patience of an absolute saint. I don’t know how you do it.”
- “Honestly, I don’t know how you manage thirty of them. One is enough for me.”
- “Thank you for teaching my child things I definitely could not have taught them.”
- “You’ve answered the same question about thirty times a day for a whole year. That deserves a medal.”
- “My child has declared you their favourite person. I’m choosing not to be offended.”
- “They haven’t stopped talking about what they’ve learnt this year. My ears hurt but my heart doesn’t.”
- “Thank you for loving your job enough that it shows. It makes all the difference to the children in that room.”
Thank you quotes for nursery teachers and TAs
Nursery teachers and teaching assistants don’t always get the same recognition — but they absolutely should.
- “Thank you for being the person who made those first steps away from me feel safe. For both of us, really.”
- “Handing over a small person and trusting that they’ll be okay is one of the hardest things. You made it easy.”
- “The role you play doesn’t always come with the credit it deserves. Please know it’s noticed and appreciated.”
- “You’ve been so much more than a nursery teacher this year. Thank you for everything.”
- “To our brilliant TA — the children are lucky to have someone who notices them as individuals. Thank you.”
- “Thank you for the small things: the gentle word when he was struggling, the extra five minutes, the remembered details. They add up to something huge.”
What to write from your child
If you want the card to be from them rather than you — or alongside your message.
- “You are my favourite teacher. Thank you for being kind.” (for younger children to copy or dictate)
- “I loved being in your class this year. Thank you for teaching me so much.”
- “You make school fun. I hope you have a lovely holiday.”
- “I am going to miss you in September. Thank you for everything.”
- “You believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. Thank you.”
- “I worked hard this year because you made me want to. Thank you.”
- “You’re the best teacher I’ve ever had.” (simple, honest, and genuinely what most children mean)
Famous quotes about teachers (for something a bit different)
If you want to include a well-known quote alongside your own message.
- “The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.” — Mark Van Doren
- “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” — Henry Brooks Adams
- “Teaching is the greatest act of optimism.” — Colleen Wilcox
- “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” — William Arthur Ward
- “One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world.” — Malala Yousafzai
- “To teach is to touch a life forever.”
A few tips for the end of term card
Keep it specific where you can. “Thank you for being so patient when he struggled with reading in January” means more than a generic thank you — it shows you noticed and remembered.
Don’t overthink it. Teachers genuinely appreciate anything heartfelt. A card that says “we loved having you as a teacher this year, thank you so much” and nothing else is still a lovely thing to receive.
If your child wants to write their own message, let them. Even if it’s a bit wobbly and misspelt. Especially then.
Small gifts are lovely but never expected. A candle, a plant, a box of chocolates — or nothing at all. The card is the thing.
Have a good end of term, everyone. And if you’ve got a teacher in your life who made a real difference this year — tell them. They’d love to know.
Let me know in the comments if you’ve got a particular message that went down well — I’m always looking to add to this list!
