Starting at an early learning centre can be an exciting yet overwhelming experience for a child. New faces, unfamiliar routines, and a different environment may make them hesitant at first.

However, with the right approach, you can help your child develop a love for learning and feel comfortable in their new setting.

In this blog, you will explore simple yet effective ways to help your child adjust, enjoy, and thrive in an early learning centre Sydney.

1. Create a Positive Mindset About Learning

A child’s attitude toward learning starts at home. Talk about the early learning centre in a fun and exciting way. Explain that it’s a place to make friends, play, and learn new things.

Read books about starting school to help them understand what to expect. Share happy stories from your own school experience. If they have older siblings, let them talk about what they enjoyed at school.

Avoid negative words like “hard” or “scary” when discussing learning. Instead, use words like “fun,” “exciting,” and “adventure.” Encourage curiosity by praising their questions and exploring new topics together.

2. Visit the Early Learning Centre Together

A new place can feel overwhelming, so visiting the early learning centre before the first day helps your child feel more comfortable.

Walk around the classrooms, playground, and other areas. Let them meet teachers and see other children playing. If possible, attend an orientation or open house.

Talk about what they see and ask how they feel about it. Show them where they will put their bag, where they will eat, and where they can play. This familiarity makes the first day less scary.

3. Establish a Comfortable Routine

Children feel more secure when they have a routine. Set a daily schedule to make mornings stress-free. Start with a consistent bedtime to ensure they get enough sleep. Wake up at the same time each morning, have a healthy breakfast, and get ready without rushing.

Practice drop-offs by creating a goodbye routine. A quick hug, a smile, and a positive phrase like “Have a great day!” can make separation easier.

Keep pick-up times consistent so they feel secure knowing when you will return. At home, talk about their day, ask about their favorite activities, and celebrate small achievements.

4. Encourage Social Interaction

Making friends helps children enjoy school more. Teach your child simple ways to interact with others. Practice sharing, taking turns, and using polite words like “please” and “thank you.” Role-play common social situations, such as introducing themselves or asking to join a game.

If at all possible, schedule playdates with your classmates before the start of the school year. Familiar faces on the first day make the transition easier. Encourage them to talk about their classmates and teachers at home.

Celebrate their friendships by asking who they played with and what they enjoyed. If they struggle to make friends, reassure them that friendships take time and encourage them to keep trying.

5. Address Any Fears or Anxiety

It’s normal for children to feel nervous about a new environment. Acknowledge their feelings and reassure them that it’s okay to be a little scared.

Talk about what worries them and offer solutions. If they fear being away from you, remind them that you will always come back. Explain to them that learning is about trying new things, and if they are concerned about making mistakes, you should reassure them.

Give them a small comfort item, like a keychain or a note in their bag, as a reminder of home. Some centres allow children to bring a stuffed toy or blanket for comfort.

Celebrate Small Milestones

Whether it’s making a new friend, learning a new word, or completing an activity, positive reinforcement encourages growth. Keep supporting and celebrating their progress to make early learning a joyful experience!
