How to Decorate Your Whole Home for Christmas

Getting ready for Christmas means preparing your home for the season. You’ll find it hard to get into the spirit of the season if the walls are bare and the tree is absent. The best way to decorate your home for Christmas is, of course, comprehensively – and, ideally, according to a well-thought-out plan. By the time you’re done, every corner of the home should be inhabited by the festive spirit!

Outside

Let’s start with the exterior of the property. It’s here that you’ll project good cheer onto your neighbours, and create the right impression on the guests who show up for your Christmas gatherings. You might set up a few centrepiece items on the lawn, wrap a few tall trees in outdoor fairy lights, and treat your front door to a wreath.

Living Room

Your living room is typically the place where the tree will sit. As such, it’s a good idea to pull out all of the stops here. If you have a mantel, drape a garland across it. If you have any throws, they can be replaced with throws that are suitably festive and glittery. 

Naturally, you won’t want to do anything that draws attention away from the tree itself. Focus your decorative efforts there, with a few choice accents around the room to distribute the Christmas vibes. If you want to personalise your tree decorations, then you might find that they’re all the more touching – especially if you have people in the house who’ve grown up having made their own baubles and hung them up year after year.

Hallway

Your hallway is where your house guests will be making their way into the building. As such, it’s a great chance to create the right impression. Despite this, many homes don’t take advantage of this, which is a shame.

You can easily create the right effect by threading tinsel up and down the bannister. Dangle bunting from the ceiling, hang a sprig of mistletoe over the doorways, and make use of those fairy lights around any decorative elements that might already be positioned here.

Kitchen

The kitchen is where we’ll be doing a lot of work over the festive period, especially if you’re going to be hosting on the day itself. 

But the kitchen doesn’t have to be a purely functional space during Christmas. Hang up some tinsel under the overhead counters, and look for oven mitts and tea towels with suitably festive prints on them. A few candles and garlands, and you’ll have a space fit to prepare a feast in – which is ideal, if that’s what you’ll be tasked with doing. 

The right Christmas atmosphere in the kitchen can be a vital source of morale when you’re midway through checking the turkey’s internal temperature. Don’t neglect it!
