ad. We had our wood burner installed back in June, replacing what was previously an open fireplace. Since then, we’ve been using it constantly – it’s honestly transformed our living room and made such a difference to how cosy the house feels. We’re proper converts now.

First Impressions: The Twizlers Firelighters
Right, I need to talk about these Twizlers first because they’ve genuinely changed how I feel about lighting fires. I used to dread it – the faff of getting a newspaper, struggling to get things going, smoke everywhere. But these wood wool firelighters are ridiculously easy to use. I have to use firelighters, but they leave that smell on my fingers, whereas Twizlers don’t have that petrol smell.
You literally just pop two (I can get away with one!) under your kindling, light them, and within minutes you’ve got a proper fire going. No smoke billowing into the room, no repeatedly relighting things. Just a straightforward, efficient fire start. They’re made from wood wool, so they’re natural and eco-friendly too, which I appreciate.
The Twizlers are honestly the quickest firelighters we’ve used. For someone who’s not particularly skilled at fire-building, they’ve made the whole process much less stressful.
The Kiln-Dried Hardwood Logs
The main star of the show is definitely the kiln-dried logs. I’ll be honest, I didn’t really understand the difference between regular logs and kiln-dried before, but now I absolutely get it.
Kiln-dried wood burns hotter and longer, with far less smoke. The moisture content is really low (under 20%), which means the wood burns more efficiently. We’ve noticed our wood burner gets properly hot now, whereas before, with random logs we’d bought, it never seemed to throw out that much heat.
The high-quality hardwood logs from Homefire are also easier to light and maintain. Once you’ve got them going, they burn steadily for a long time without needing constant attention. Perfect for cosy evenings when you just want to relax rather than constantly feeding the fire.
Heat Logs: Great Value
We’ve also been trying the Heat Logs, which are compressed wood briquettes. These are brilliant for when you want a long-lasting burn without using too many of your proper logs. They’re made from recycled wood waste, so they’re eco-friendly, and they burn for ages.
I’ve been using a mix – starting with kindling and logs to get a good fire established, then adding a Heat Log or two to keep things going through the evening. They’re also good to pop on if you want the fire to tick over while you go out for an hour or so, like on the school run. It’s a good value because they last so much longer than you’d expect, and the heat output is impressive.
Our Evening Routine
I’ve actually started looking forward to lighting the fire now, which is saying something. My son loves it too – they’ll happily sit on the sofa with his books while the fire crackles away. It’s become our proper winter evening ritual.
The whole process is straightforward now:
- Stack some kindling in the wood burner
- Add two Twizlers underneath
- Light them and let them catch
- Add a couple of kiln-dried logs once the kindling’s going
- Sit back and enjoy
Within about 15 minutes, we’ve got a roaring fire that fills the room with warmth. The wood burns cleanly with minimal smoke, and the heat it throws out is genuinely impressive.

Is It Worth It?

Yes, they’re a bit more expensive than picking up cheap logs locally, but the difference in performance is massive. They’re much easier to light, burn hotter, last longer, and produce way less smoke and ash.
The Twizlers are a game-changer, too. At a good price for how easy they make fire lighting, I won’t be going back to newspaper and matches.
For us, it’s been worth it. We’re actually using our wood burner now, which means the heating stays off in the evening and we’re saving on energy bills. Plus, there’s something genuinely lovely about spending winter evenings by a real fire.

We’ll definitely be ordering again once we work through this lot. The kids are already asking when we can light the fire each evening, which tells you everything you need to know, really.
