Every year, without fail, I end up standing in the card aisle with nothing useful in my head. My mum is one of those people who always picks exactly the right card — the kind that makes you feel like she really thought about it — and I’ve been writing variations of “hope you have a lovely day” for about a decade now.
It’s not that I don’t have the feelings. I have loads of feelings. I just can’t seem to get them out of my head and into a card without it sounding either painfully generic or slightly over the top.
So here’s a proper collection of birthday messages for mum, covering everything from the short and sweet to the ones that’ll make her actually cry. Whether you want something funny, something heartfelt, or something that just says “I love you” without a lot of fuss — there’s something here.

What to Write in a Birthday Card for Mum: A Few Tips
If you want to write something a bit more personal rather than copying a message word for word, here’s a simple approach.
Start with something specific. Even one line — “I was thinking about that time you [did this thing]” or “I can’t believe it’s been [X] years” — makes a generic sentiment feel real. It shows you thought about her, not just about what to write.
You don’t have to fill every inch of the card. A short, genuine message lands better than three paragraphs of filler. Write what you mean and stop.
If she’s going through a difficult time, acknowledge it briefly. “I know this year has been a lot — I hope today feels like a proper break from it” is kind and real. You don’t need to ignore the hard stuff to make it a happy birthday.
And if you’re really stuck? Tell her. “I have absolutely no idea how to say what I want to say in a birthday card, but I hope you know” is a very human thing to write, and she’ll love you for it.
Have you got a go-to birthday message for your mum? Or is card-writing one of those things you also leave until the last minute? Drop it in the comments — I’d love to hear what you go for.
