A trip to Sorrento, Australia

On one of the cooler days of our Melbourne trip, my brother and his wife took us to Sorrento, a beautiful coastal town on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. We took the ferry across the water from Queenscliff Harbour, which took about an hour to reach Sorrento Pier – a much more scenic route than driving around the bay.

Beach and Pier Visit

From the pier, we drove to a nearby park so the kids could burn off some energy before heading to the seafront. We grabbed hot chips from one of the beachfront cafes to go with our packed sandwiches – classic Australian beach lunch, complete with an army of seagulls eyeing our food.

After eating, we wandered along the beach and down the historic pier. The beach was absolutely stunning: pale golden sand and crystal-clear turquoise water. It’s the kind of beach that looks almost too perfect to be real. The water was surprisingly clear for Port Phillip Bay, and you could see straight to the bottom in the shallows.

Sorrento has this effortlessly relaxed atmosphere that you find in the best coastal towns. The main street is lined with cafes, boutiques and galleries, and the whole place has a slightly vintage seaside resort feel to it. There’s a mix of grand old limestone buildings and modern beach houses, which gives it character without feeling overdeveloped.

The beaches are the main draw, though. We visited several different spots along the coast, each with its own character. Some are sheltered and calm, perfect for families, while others face the open ocean and are popular with surfers.

Beach Hopping

We drove around to explore a few other beaches along the Mornington Peninsula before heading back through St Kilda. Unfortunately, it started absolutely pouring with rain, so we cut our beach adventures short and headed home. That’s Victoria weather for you – unpredictable but never boring!
