Whitby Marine Discovery Centre & Lobster Hatchery: 2026 Review

The Whitby Marine Discovery Centre opened in August 2023, and I’m so happy we got to visit! The last time we went to Whitby, it was just about to open, so we missed it.

It has 30 native marine species spread across five large tanks. The marine centre is a great way to explore some of the local sea life whilst in Whitby. Whilst it’s only a small centre, there’s still lots to learn – especially about the Lobster Hatchery, which aims to release 100,000 lobsters back into the wild each year.

Whitby in North Yorkshire has a long history of fishing and a great fishing community, so this is a perfect attraction for the fishing town and brilliant to visit in wet weather when the beaches of Whitby are off-limits.

Since my visit in 2023, I’ve been reading what other families think, and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Let me tell you why this little gem is such a hit!

I certainly didn’t! But Yorkshire lobsters are the most sought-after and expensive in the world! Whitby is the THIRD LARGEST lobster fishery in Europe (behind Scarborough and Bridlington).

An average of 100,000 lobsters are landed each year by Whitby vessels. Yorkshire is basically the lobster capital of Europe!

The Lobster Survival Problem

Despite lobsters laying up to 20,000 eggs per cycle, only about 1% of larvae survive in the wild. In fact, one source says only 1 in 20,000 makes it from egg to juvenile. That’s shocking!

The Hatchery’s Solution: By providing a secure environment for developing lobster eggs and larvae, the hatchery increases the survival rate to 30-50% (some sources say up to 50%!).

The 100,000 Goal

The hatchery has set an ambitious goal: release 100,000 juvenile lobsters into the ocean each year. That’s the SAME number landed by local Whitby fishing vessels – essentially maintaining the population!

The process:

1. Take eggs from female lobsters
2. Keep them in the hatchery through larvae stage
3. Protect them until they’re juveniles
4. Release them when they’re big enough to have a real chance

Our Visit to Whitby Marine Discovery Centre

The Marine Discovery Centre is only small – we only spent about 20 minutes there. There are a few tanks that have different species in them. You can have a look in your own time and read the screens and information dotted about the centre.

It was amazing to see the baby lobsters in one of the tanks. They were TINY! I overlooked them at first, but the woman who was working there was telling a group of people about them all, which brought my attention to them.

This is exactly what multiple other visitors mention – the staff are brilliant at pointing things out and sharing fascinating information. You’re not just looking at tanks; you’re getting a proper educational experience.

It gives you the chance to explore the wonders of marine life, learn about conservation efforts, and understand the importance of preserving our oceans. Despite being small, it punches well above its weight in terms of educational value.

There’s a small shop area at the end where you can buy merchandise:

3. You’re Only Interested in Exotic Marine Life

This is NATIVE UK species. It’s cod, lobsters, crabs, starfish – not tropical fish or sharks. That’s the point, but some visitors might prefer tropical marine life.
