I’ve been interested in Geomag and magnetic construction toys ever since my friend told me her son loved them! So I was pleased when I was contacted about trying some out. These kinds of toys are a great way to spend some time building, problem-solving and exploring! Let’s look at what I was sent.

Geomag & Geomag Magicube

Geomag Magicube

I asked for the Magicube 13-piece Set as the other sets are aimed at older children. My toddler is almost three and the Geomag Magicube sets are designed for children aged 1-5 years. They are a safe and fun introduction to the world of magnets. These 3D cubes, similar to palm-sized building bricks, are not only colourful and appealing to young children, but they also have magnets on each side, allowing little ones to explore how magnets work and create their own 3D models.

The Magicube blocks come in a variety of colours and shapes, making them perfect for little hands to grasp and manipulate. They even come with special magnetic wheels that add an extra element of fun to the creations. Whether children follow the example built in the guidebook or let their imagination run wild, the Magicube sets provide a wonderful way for young kids to engage in construction play and develop their fine motor skills.

The Magicube sets are made from 100% recycled plastic, making them not only a fantastic STEM learning toy but also an environmentally friendly choice.

My son had a keen interest in the Magicubes right away. He had great fun exploring the invisible forces of magnetism. He built lots of different shapes on top of the wheels – with just a little bit of help from me to start with. This really is a great toy for toddlers as it’s an intriguing way to introduce your child to building things. The way the magnets snap together is both satisfying and fun.

You can buy it here.

Geomag Classic: Unleash Your Creativity

I also requested the Geomag Classic set. This set is great if you’re looking for a more advanced building toy set. They are perfect for children aged 3 and above. These sets consist of magnetic rods and metal balls that can be connected in various ways to create structures limited only by your child’s imagination.

The options for building with Geomag Classic are endless. From simple shapes to intricate designs, children can explore different models and learn about the properties of shapes and the power of magnets. They can build towers, bridges, and even vehicles using magnetic rods and metal balls. The inclusion of plastic shapes in some sets adds an extra dimension to the creations, providing more stability and allowing for even more complex structures.

One of the great features of Geomag Classic is its compatibility with other sets in the range. Whether it’s the Supercolor sets, the Mechanics sets, or the Panels sets, all the components work together, allowing children to expand their collection and build even bigger and more impressive creations.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I was going to open this Geomag set yet as I thought my son might be a bit young for it and it has small pieces. But he brought the box over to me so I decided to open it and play with him.

Although there are guides in the instruction booklet, we just created what we felt like. My son loved the steel balls and seeing how the magnetic forces worked with the metal rods. We had hours of fun creating magnetic shapes. I was surprised that he seemed to enjoy this more than the Magicube. Although he couldn’t build structures properly, he copied me and kept sticking the magnetic rods to the ball bearings – it’s all just part of the fun, exploring the magnets and having a lot of fun on the way.

Geomag Mechanics Gravity

I didn’t get this magnetic construction kit, but I thought it looked cool! It’s for children aged 8 and above who crave a more dynamic building experience. The Geomag Mechanics Gravity sets are a great way for older children to explore the magical properties of magnetism. These sets combine the principles of magnetism with mechanical elements to create structures that can move and perform amazing tricks.

The Mechanics Gravity sets involve using plastic pieces to build circuits for the magnetic balls to travel along. With the force of gravity and the power of magnets, children can create loops, turns, and even roller coasters. The set comes with detailed instructions on how to set up the circuits, but children are also encouraged to experiment and come up with their own designs.

The Benefits of Geomag: Learning Through Play

Geomag sets offer many benefits for children of all ages. Here are some of the key advantages of incorporating Geomag into your child’s playtime:

  1. Enhanced Creativity: Geomag sets provide a platform for children to unleash their creativity and imagination. By building and designing their own structures, children can explore different shapes, colours, and patterns, allowing their creative juices to flow.
  2. Fine Motor Skills Development: As children manipulate the magnetic rods, metal balls, and plastic panels, they refine their fine motor skills. The precise movements required to connect the pieces and create stable structures help to improve hand-eye coordination and dexterity. It’s great for hand-eye co-ordination.
  3. Introduction to STEM Concepts: Geomag sets introduce children to the principles of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in a hands-on and engaging way. Through building and experimenting, children learn about magnetism, geometry, and mechanics.
  4. Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: Building with Geomag sets requires problem-solving skills and critical thinking. Children must figure out how to connect the pieces to create stable structures and overcome challenges they encounter along the way.
  5. Open-Ended Play: Geomag sets offer open-ended play opportunities, allowing children to explore and experiment at their own pace. There are no right or wrong answers, fostering a sense of freedom and independence in their play.
  6. Collaboration and Communication: Geomag sets can be enjoyed individually or in a group setting. When children work together to build structures, they learn valuable skills such as collaboration, communication, and teamwork.

Safety Considerations and Age Recommendations

While Geomag sets are designed to be safe and enjoyable, there are a few safety considerations to keep in mind. Some sets contain small parts, such as metal balls, which can pose a choking hazard for younger children. Always supervise younger children during play and ensure that they are using age-appropriate sets.

It’s also important to follow the age recommendations provided by the manufacturer. Different sets are designed for different age groups, taking into account the complexity of the builds and the potential risks associated with certain components. Always choose a set that is suitable for your child’s age and developmental stage.

Unlocking Creativity with Geomag

Geomag sets are not just toys; they are tools for unlocking creativity, enhancing fine motor skills, and fostering a love for STEM subjects. Whether your child is exploring the Magicube sets, building with Geomag Classic, or experimenting with the Mechanics Gravity loops, they are engaging in meaningful play that promotes learning and development. My husband, who is a physics teacher, wants to take them to work to help him teach magnetism to his students. It’s a great way to start encouraging a love of science, problem-solving and encouraging screen-free play.

We’ve had fun playing with our Geomag toys and I’m now considering buying my son some of the other sets for his birthday in a few months.
