I’ve never claimed to be a beauty blogger and I won’t pretend that I know things about make-up. Or that I own so many make-up products that I have to ‘organise’ them in one of those plastic tower things. I am a complete n00b and my make-up bag draw er… The space in which I leave my make-up laying around usually includes:
- A Naked 2 palette
- A black eye liner pencil
- A mascara
On super special occasions, you’ll also find:
- BB cream
- A blusher
- A powder
- A foundation
That’s it.
And now you’ll find two mascaras.
I actually googled ‘mascara blog reviews’ to see how I should go about reviewing this, what type of photographs to take, what I should talk about etc etc out of fear of looking like a massive knobhead (which most you know, I am). I probably should not have admitted any of the above to you. But if this review is a bit naff, then that’s my story. and I’m sticking to it. The end.
Last year I took the plunge and paid £18 for Benefits They’re Real mascara, which is the most I’ve ever spent on a mascara in my whole life. I pretty much regretted it from day one as it didn’t do anything for my lashes and dried out really quickly. Every time I read a review of it on another blog, I tend to go into moany-rant mode about how disappointed I was with it. I’m glad to be finally writing about my experience on my blog. Maybe now I can start getting over it.
After seeing a post on Forever Amber’s blog and noticing her eye-lashes looking fantastic, I asked her how she got them looking so long and full. She recommended this rather expensive mascara, but then she also recommended the Maybelline Illegal Length Fiber Extensions Waterproof Mascara as a cheaper alternative.
I had to use my Google skillz (again) to google ‘How does fiber extension mascara’ work. Because (again) I’m clueless. Apparently it means the formula contains nylon or rayon fibers that stick to your lashes, making them appear longer. Cool story, bro!
I immediately went into hunter/gathering mode and found one on Amazon for £5.99 and kept it in my wishlist. Last week, added it to my shopping basket and checked the hell out.
Maybelline Illegal Length Fiber Extensions Mascara Results
As you can see from the photos below, my eyelashes are really long but rather thin. I applied 3 coats and was very happy with the results!
I used them to make this lovely salad, which contains the peppers, sun dried tomatoes, avocado, spring onions, green and black olives, lettuce, cucumber, spinach, rocket, carrot and chicken all mixed up in a lovely rosemary, olive oil, salt and pepper dressing and drizzled with a balsamic glaze.
And I made this all by myself!
It’s fair to say that my diet is going well. I’ve also entered a 10K race which I will be running next Sunday. Ouch…

I like it how you are doing this sort of post. It is what I want to start doing soon also even though I also would never regard myself as a beauty blogger. I am always looking for mascaras to try and it is important to get the right one. My current one I chose based on the rainbow packaging.

I once used the illegal length mascara and was NOT satisfied because my lashes looked thin what I really hated! Now I’m using a mascara similarly to the volume collagen from L’Oréal but from a cheap and cruelty free company called Essence and my lashes look awesome!!! The name is extreme mascara. Do you know essence maybe?
And take of the cactus! Some sorts of cactus start to bloom and then the ugly plant turns into a wonderful flower ;-)))

I love reading your posts! They make me laugh so much. I love the creepy neighbor bits. Does that sound weird? I have to agree with you about the They’re Real Mascara. I have been really disappointed with it. It crumbles off my lashes, leaving dark circles under my eyes. I’m definitely going to try this one. It looks great!
I don’t know much about makeup either, but I do know that I need something better than the one I currently have. Your lashes are looking long and lovely!

Ah, so glad you liked it – or, at least, didn’t hate it! (And it never occurs to me to put flowers or stuff in the background of my review photos – I should really start doing this, I’m sure it would be much more interesting than just placing the thing on my desk!)
For getting it off, I swear by Boots Botanics Soothing Eye Makeup Remover – it’s only a couple of pounds, but it’s easily as good as much more expensive ones I’ve tried (and I wear waterproof mascara every day, so I’ve tried a LOT!)

I too have been known to google ways of structuring a review, but it all goes a over t about 3 lines in when I start rambling about random crap which is naaaat acceptable bblogger behaviour…I also have no flowers to picture gracefully behind my stuff, so make do with shower curtains/chopping boards and the back of doors as my pretty backgrounds.
