Colleen Ballinger & Adam McIntyre: The Dark Side of Fandom

The internet has been buzzing lately with the grooming accusations against Colleen Ballinger, the creator of the popular character Miranda Sings. The allegations have highlighted a need for a broader conversation about power dynamics, children’s safety online, and the dark side of fandom.

Over the last few months, I’ve been looking into the issues around children’s safety online, including:

• why I’m sharing my child less online
• the dangers of TikTok for Children
• digital kidnapping

This story about Colleen Ballinger has been living rent-free in my head for the past few days. There have been multiple videos about her and because I’ve been on a trip this weekend, I had time to watch these videos in the car and I’m horrified.

Trigger warning: Discussion of sexual abuse and abuse of minors.

What Happened to Colleen Ballinger?

I’m horrified because when I think back to myself as a teenager, I can put myself in Adam’s shoes and realise how easy it is to get manipulated by your idol and hang onto their every word. He was a teenager. She was in her 30’s. I can see myself doing the same if I had the opportunity to get close to someone I adored.

I’m horrified because I am the same age as Colleen, and I have zero interest in building relationships with children as young as 13. I understand that this may be her fan base, but I believe she should have kept any interactions with her fans on her YouTube comments and on public social media, not in private DM’s or group chats. She should not be making friends with fans that are underage.

I am horrified because I have a son, and I am worried about his safety on the internet as he gets older.

So I wanted to delve into the details of what’s happened with Colleen Ballinger and Adam McIntyre and explore the implications of the grooming accusations and discuss the importance of addressing these issues to protect young fans and ensure a healthy online environment for all. I felt I should do this because I expect the majority of my audience is not Colleen fans. But they are parents. So it’s important to help parents understand the dangers. Especially as Colleen Ballinger is not the stereotypical predator or groomer.

So let’s get started.

A Brief Overview: Who is Colleen Ballinger and Miranda Sings?

Colleen Ballinger is a 36-year-old American comedian, actress, and YouTube personality who rose to fame through her character, Miranda Sings. With over 20 million subscribers across three YouTube channels, Ballinger’s quirky and offbeat humour has attracted a massive following. Miranda Sings is a satirical caricature of a sheltered, talentless, and narcissistic young woman who aspires to stardom despite her obvious lack of skills. Looking back at her content with this new information. It isn’t a surprise that Miranda Sings is a child predator. Colleen Ballinger grooming her younger fans has been going on for years behind the scenes. Let’s take a look at these grooming accusations.

The Accusations: Adam McIntyre’s Allegations against Colleen Ballinger

In April 2020, 17-year-old Adam McIntyre, an Irish YouTuber and former fan of Ballinger, released a video titled “Colleen Ballinger, stop lying” in which he accused the YouTube star of grooming and exploiting him when he was a minor. In his video, McIntyre claimed that he first became a fan of Ballinger’s Miranda Sings character in 2012 and that they developed a friendship in 2016 when he was only 13 years old.

According to McIntyre, Ballinger shared private information about her divorce with him, asked him to find gossip about her ex-husband Joshua Evans, and even sent him an unused set of women’s lingerie when he was just 13. McIntyre also alleged (and later proved by showing their conversations) that Ballinger gave him access to her Miranda Sings’ Twitter account so he could run it for her, without pay, and that she promised to employ him if things went well.

The Fallout: Reactions to McIntyre’s Video and Ballinger’s Apology

Following the release of McIntyre’s video in 2020, many viewers were quick to label Ballinger’s behaviour as grooming. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children defines grooming as “a type of abuse in which someone builds a relationship, trust, and emotional connection with a child or young person so they can manipulate, exploit and abuse them.” The accusations against Ballinger sparked a significant backlash, with many people condemning her actions and expressing concern about the safety of young fans online.

In response to the allegations, Ballinger released a video titled “addressing everything” in which she apologised for her past racist and fat-shaming content and attempted to explain the context behind her relationship with McIntyre. She admitted to making mistakes in her communication with him and sending him lingerie but denied that her actions were malicious or that she was grooming him. Many fans sided with Colleen and Adam was made out to be a liar. Adam lost many of his online friends.

Another person, Kodee Tyler Dahl, made a video debunking Adams’s video. Recently, Kodee posted a new video talking about how they were also manipulated by Colleen and were groomed to make the video against Adam. They spoke about their experience and validated Adam’s story.

Since then, numerous fans have come forward sharing screenshots from private chats involving Colleen and her friend Kory, proving she was trying to take Adam down. Adam was 17 years old at the time. Other people have come forward talking about how they have also been manipulated by Colleen.

2023 Videos

Since that video, Adam has uploaded new videos talking about his relationship with Colleen, showing the conversation leading up to their fallout, sharing how Colleen regularly dangled carrots in front of him to get him to do things for her, such as find information, harass people and give her content ideas that went viral. She manipulated him into performing free labour for her, including generating content ideas and ghostwriting tweets for her Miranda Sings character without pay. When a controversial tweet posted by Mcintyre on Miranda Sings’ account backfired, Ballinger scapegoated the teenager and guilt-tripped him for the backlash she received. He shows the Twitter messages between the two during this time, where Colleen approves the controversial tweet and then blames Adam when she gets backlash for this. It’s scary how she turned the conversation around so Adam was the one apologising to her when he had done nothing wrong.

Inappropriate Communication

One of the most concerning allegations made by Mcintyre involved Ballinger’s inappropriate communication with him and other underage fans in a private group chat ‘the weenies’. He showed screenshots of Ballinger, who was in her 30s at the time, sending sexually suggestive messages to the teenagers, asking them about their virginity, and favourite sexual positions, and even requesting photos of their buttocks. This type of communication is not only highly inappropriate but also indicative of grooming behaviour.

There’s so much, too much to cover here but you can watch the videos for yourself on Adam’s channel. Here are some of the things Colleen has done that are problematic.

• Using the word ‘rape’ multiple times injokes.
• Dressing up as Latino for a skit using racial stereotypes.
• Being fatphobic
• Having inappropriate conversations about sex with minors.
• Sending underwear to a minor
• Laughing at fans behind their back in group chats
• Grooming minors by forming personal relationships to get them to do things for her
• Laughing at homeless people
• Queerbaiting
• Exploiting her children online
• Using her children’s medical conditions as clickbait
• Using children on stage inappropriate comedy sketches
• Talking to children about intimate things such as sex and periods

Kodee Tyler

Kodee Tyler resurfaced all this by posting her video, titled ‘Why I left the colleen ballinger fandom’, validating Adam. Adam forgave her because she had been manipulated by Colleen (Kodee Tyler’s age was 30 years old) and he knew what that felt like. About a week later, she deleted all her videos following a video by someone called Dustin who said that she was an adult when all this happened and she shouldn’t get a free pass, as well as sharing some other information indicating that Kodee was problematic, also talking to minors in chats and only posted the video for her own personal gain. She then jumped on a live stream, had a breakdown, admitted she didn’t really care about Adam and deleted all her social media and videos. It’s a hot mess. Kodee Tyler is 33 years old and it seems like many people believed that she was younger.

Kodee Tyler as not returned to the internet since. Or at least, not under her actual name.

Here are some other fans that have since come forward.

Becky

Becky was a fan of Colleen and was 16 when she went to a Miranda sings show. One of the parts of the show is where Miranda picks a child who is wearing skimpy clothing – such as shorts or a skirt, and a fan that is dressed as Miranda. She then tells the child who is wearing the skimpy clothing that they are ‘porn’. This leads many of the fans to go to the showers dressed this way so they can get called up.

Becky was one of them and was wearing a short dress. But when she was called up, it was for a different part. Miranda had her lay on her back, opened her legs so she was standing above her and a fart sound came on stage. Becky was embarrassed and traumatised by this, not only that everyone was laughing, but that Miranda spread her legs, looking down at her and could see her underwear.

Ella

Ella was a big fan of Colleen and has medical conditions. Screenshots have been shared of Colleen making fun of Ella for using filters that show freckles on her face and for her gender identity. Colleen also allegedly said that Ella was pretending to be sick to get closer to Colleen.

Johnny

Johnny was another fan who ended up working on one of the Miranda Sing’s tours. He was underpaid for this work, was threatened and bullied by Colleen’s Best Friend, Kory Desoto and not given a place to sleep or shower.

Oliver

Oliver was another fan. When Oliver was 13, Colleen’s brother, Trent, regularly spoke to Oliver on Twitter DMs. These messages were inappropriate and hint that Trent was interested in Oliver in a sexual way.

The conversations show Trend telling Oliver to keep anything they say private because his family have told him not to talk to anyone under 18. Further conversations talk about Oliver’s age and sexuality. Trent never wanted Oliver to go to sleep and would try and keep him up by talking when Oliver went to bed. Trent was quite needy in this friendship and even sent Oliver his number, to which Oliver said it wasn’t appropriate to be texting him.

Alex

Alex was a Miranda fan who suffers from many health issues. She met with Colleen and Cory during an event. Cory Desoto told Alex that she was too big and Colleen couldn’t do a photo pose with her. Colleen then nodded in approval at what Cory had said, leaving Alex upset that her idol thinks she is too fat.

Cory then went on to bully Alex on Twitter, calling her a Squeen (a word Colleen used to describe fans that were very obsessed and over the top) and Colleen liked these tweets. They also caused other members of the fandom to bully her.

Trisha Paytas

Trisha Paytas is worth mentioning here. Trisha and Colleen have become close recently and they have been doing a podcast together. Screenshots have emerged of Colleen seeing naked photos of Trisha to minors to laugh at her and her body.

Sending porn to minors is a crime.

We all know that Trisha Paytas is very problematic and does not deserve a platform, but it says a lot about Colleen’s character that she would laugh at her, and then become best friends with her.

The Colleen Ballinger Screenshots

The text messages and screenshots evidence from Group Chats, private messages and the Instaweeies chat are pretty damning. Let’s take a look at some. The members in this group chat were all under 16.

These screenshots are recent. Colleen has been in an Instagram group chat called The Instaweenies and left on the 23rd of June. The following screenshots are members of the chat asking her to talk about what happened, and asking if she had spoken about them behind their backs as she had done with Ella and other fans.

We are still waiting for the big Colleen Ballinger response, but it seems she has gone silent. Adam McIntyre has done a fantastic job sharing his experience (which someone else brought up and shared the Colleen texts and DMs publically). He is well-spoken, level-headed and calm while clearly discussing his trauma.

Kodee Tyler is 33 years old. She was 30 years old when she started the smear campaign to bring Adam Mcintyre down. She was manipulated by Colleen to do this.

Update: Colleen Responds!

On the 29th June 2023, Colleen Ballinger responds with a 10-minute video titled ‘hi’ on her ‘colleen vlogs’ channel.

In the video, she gets out her Ukelele and sings a song starting by saying she hasn’t been doing too great. She says her team have told her not to say anything on the matter, but they didn’t say she can’t sing about it. The video focuses on the following things:

• She says the allegations are not true
• She says she just wanted to be best friends with her fans
• She says she is a loser, not a groomer (I think she is both?)
• She says she has made ‘a mistake’
• She refers to the backlash as ‘the toxic gossip train’
• She says how the ‘toxic gossip train’ are trying to ruin a life
• She says how they will ‘stab her in her bony little back’ (body checking again!)
• She says Miranda’s sings is PG13 content and it’s the parent’s responsibility to make sure they are comfortable
• She says people are mad because she made a ‘fart joke’
• She ends it with ‘fuck me right?’

What she doesn’t acknowledge is:

• It wasn’t about the fart joke, it was about opening the legs of a minor, who was wearing a skirt, on a stage full of people. And this was just ONE example out of hundreds.
• Sexual conversations with minors
• Exploiting fans to do social media work and give her content ideas
• Jonny’s awful experience on tour
• Adam’s experience with her
• Accusing Ella of faking her illness
• Allegations surrounding her charity donations
• Making rape jokes, racist bits, child pornography jokes and sexualising children for years
• Only leaving the Instagram version of ‘The Weenies’ a few days ago
• Sending Adam underwear
• Her brother Trent’s behaviour with minors

and so much more!

She completely gaslights in this video and acts like people are jumping on a bandwagon. She only focuses on a fart joke. She says everything is a lie but she has nothing to back this up. Please remember that there is evidence to prove what she did, both in screenshots of private conversations and in her own videos that she published. It’s a pretty poor apology video – well actually, I wouldn’t even call it an apology as she does not say I’m sorry once. It’s sarcastic, respectful and demeaning. At least it shows who she really is. It’s hard to have any sympathy for her at all after this.

The backlash from Colleen Ballingers’ response video

The response video has not been well received. Colleen has earned 900k dislikes (at the time of writing this) and that number is growing every day.

Toxic Gossip Train has turned into a bit of a meme, with social media users doing parodies of the video on TikTok and tweeting train companies asking for a ticket to Manipulation Station.

She has managed to make her situation worse as more and more big YouTubers have now started to cover the story, bringing more attention to it.

The main issue is that there’s evidence of what she has done, as well as multiple first-hand accounts with more and more people coming forward every day!

The latest is from a former writer and PA of the show ‘Haters back off’, Colleen Ballinger was allegedly caught saying the N-word and making racist remarks about black people and also made a joke about the audition tape of a black actor with poor lighting and she shouted out ‘WHERE IS HE?’ implying that he is so dark-skinned he disappeared.

Trisha Paytas Reponds

Trisha Paytas published a video titled ‘Colleen’ on the 3rd of July 2023.

The video is in response to the nude photos that Colleen has been sending to minors and laughing at her body, as well as having viewing parties. Trisha said that she asked Colleen about these allegations but Colleen denied them. But yesterday (2nd July), people released videos and screenshots showing Colleen doing this.

In the video, Trisha says that she had been in contact with Colleen until Colleen sent her a link to her ‘hi’ (toxic gossip train) video. Trisha thought the video minimised the trauma of those involved and was shocked at it. Trisha also states how she has zero tolerance for talking to minors and is disgusting that Colleen has been sending photos of her to young fans.

She thought they were friends and is hurt. She wanted to make the video to let everyone know that she is disassociating from Colleen and she says she will never speak of Colleen again.

The video is very balanced and Trisha comes across very well. I am not a fan of Trisha, but you’ve got to admit that her response to Colleen is very fair and well-communicated. Though it is worth noting hat Trisha has only spoken up once she was involved and hurt. Before these screenshots were made published, she was still in contact with Colleen. Adam McIntyre also claims to have emailed Trisha multiple times warning her about Colleen.

Trisha Paytas has since spoken about the situation briefly on her Just Trish podcast. He has spoken about the Vanity Fair article (below) and how bias it looked in favour of Colleen.

Colleen Ballinger’s Blackface Accusations

On the 5th of June 2023, a video emerged of Colleen Ballinger from 2009. During one of her live shows, she was singing Beyonce’s ‘all the single ladies’ with her face painted black. Of course, this has caused more outrage and disgust.

Her legal team responded by saying that these claims were false and that Colleen Ballinger didn’t have her face painted back. Just before this song, she was singing a song from Wicked and had painted her face green for that bit.

It’s interesting that this is the ONLY thing her legal team has responded to. I guess they can’t disprove the rest as there’s proof.

In this case, Colleen may not have been doing blackface. But we have other witnesses and examples of her being racist.

Colleen’s Legal Team Respond

So, Colleen’s legal team first responded to the allegations that Colleen was doing blackface.

They have since responded again. Ethan Klein, who runs the popular H3 Podcast was sent a Cease & Desist. But not the podcast discussing that Colleen groomed minors sent porn of Trisha to children or any of the other things she has allegedly done. They said:

We are writing regarding a recent episode of your podcast, in which you falsely reported that Ms. Ballinger submitted a copyright claim based on your prior use of her song. You also falsely reported that Ms. Ballinger uploaded the song to CD Baby for sale. Neither of those statements is true, nor did you have any information to support making those claims on your podcast

It appears someone else has uploaded the song to CD Baby and is claiming copyright.

Her legal team are still silent on the other matters. Like sexual abuse, exploiting minors and grooming allegations.

Colleen has still made no further statements since the Toxic Gossip train song.

The Vanity Fair Article

On July 19th, Vanity Fair published an article written by Andrew Quintana titled ‘How the Miranda Sings/Colleen Ballinger Scandal Went Off the Rails’

As you can tell by the title, the tone of the article implies that the scandal has gone too far. The article downplays the allegations towards Colleen Ballinger, leaves out key details, diminishes the severity of the claims and portrays Adam McIntyre as someone who is obsessed with taking Colleen down.

The article did not reach out to any of the victims, only Colleen. The article received backlash due to its lack of, well, truth. Many people believe that it paid for Colleen to paint her in a better light. It makes statements such as: ‘Various allegations remain unverified, left to endlessly circulate as they fall under that ever-expanding umbrella of “inappropriate behavior.”‘

Most of the allegations have infect been verified by screenshots, videos and pictures.

Andrew Quintana has since blocked Adam from Instagram (despite tagging Adam in a post about the article), set his profile to private and had his author page removed from Vanity Fair. Though the article remains for now and Vanity Fair has not realised any statements about it or acknowledged the masses of backlash it received.

Trisha Paytas and Adam Mcintyre’s relationship

Trisha Paytas and Adam Mcintyre have since had conversations over email where they have spoken to each other and cleared the air over their past. Adam has previously tried to warn Trisha about how Colleen bullies her and talks about her behind her back. Trisha blocked Adam over a tweet he made about her baby (which Adam says is a reference to the Queen dying, not her baby).

They both say they do not have a relationship with each other, and they are not going to become friends over this, but they both have empathy for each other in this situation and agree that Colleen’s behaviour, particularly how Colleen sent nudes of Trisiha to Adam as a minor, is serious.

They have hinted at things going on behind the scenes, possibly legal action but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Johnny Silvestri is Exposed

We waited a long time for Swoop to the third part of her Colleen Ballenger series and on 17th August 2023, she dropped a video that was almost 4 hours in length.

This video surprised many and revolved around a 6-hour interview she had with Johnny Silvestri.

Things did not add up and during the investigation her team did, they were able to prove that Johnny Silvestri had been lying or exaggerating his story.

Johnny Accuses Josh

Johnny Silvestri accused Joshua David Evans (Colleen’s ex-husband) of grooming him. He said he took him under his wing as a mentor, groomed him, invited him to hang out and then ghosted him.

What Swoop Uncovered

Here are the main things Swoop uncovered:

• Timelines don’t add up with what he says, things regarding his age, Colleen and Joshua’s divorce and a few other things, such as bringing Adam McIntyre into his story before Adam was in the fandom. In particular, he likes to say he was a minor when some things happened to him as an adult.
• He was in group chats with minors for years talking about sexual content and drinking.
• His best friend was a predator and he helped divert minors to him.
• He tampered with evidence – deleted messages in DMs between him and Josh before sending them to Swoop, but Josh also sent Swoop the same conversation proving that Johnny had deleted some.
• It appears he was attached to Josh, often messaging him many times and Josh didn’t respond.
• Their relationship was mostly on Twitter and it appears Josh was just replying to fans.
• He says Josh invited him to a show when Johnny invited himself.
• He told other people’s stories without their consent, embellishing the details to make Josh sound like a predator.
• Tried to make his own story ‘the most important‘.
• Lied about not being able to access old texts on his old Mac.
• Sent porn of Trisha Paytas to others.
• and much more.

Honestly – it sounds like he had an obsession with Joshua, Joshua kept him at arms length and Johnny imagined a relationship that was not there. Johnny has shared no proof of him being groomed and avoids questions, talks in circles about general things during interviews.

Joshua also apologised to Johnny multiple times both in private and in public. These apologies were not accepted.

JoJo Siwa Speaks Out In Favour Of Colleen

JoJo Siwa was interviewed on the Podcast ‘Howie Mandel Does Stuff’ that aired on 12th September 2023.

During the Podcast, the subject of Colleen comes up. JoJo Siwa defends Colleen, she says they started being friends when she was 12 years old (red flag!) and said Colleen was nothing but nice to her. She said that the Internet takes a lie and runs with it.

JoJo is now getting a lot of hate for this. Because there is a lot of proof to back up the MANY allegations against Colleen. It’s not just one ‘lie‘. It’s many many things that are documented.

JoJo Siwa is also a victim of both grooming and child exploration. He has had her whole childhood exploited and has befriended many older YouTubers who often use her in video content. She is 20 years old but acts much younger. She’s probably old enough to know better but has been groomed and influenced by others for years and years.

Joshua David Evans Swoop Interview

On the 14th of September 2023, Swoop published her interview with Joshua David Evans. It’s another long interview that’s over 3 hours long. In the interview, he covers his divorce, how Colleen treated him, the power imbalance in their relationship and Swoop asks him about his involvement in the fandom. He takes accountability for what he has done wrong.

Key points for me:

• He is very careful to remind everyone that he is taking accountability and this didn’t make it right whenever he provided context and explained why he was involved in something. He was not making excuses, he was giving us the reasoning for his involvement in any wrongdoing.
• The way he spoke about Colleen matched the way other victims had characterised her. She loved talking about other people, she was rude and thought she was better than anyone else. She was two-faced.
• He spoke about JoJo Siwa and how he didn’t fight to keep her on his side after the divorce. He recognised that people were using a child for views and didn’t want to do that anymore, so let her go.
• Johnny always told a story about how he came out to Josh, and Josh’s response was ‘that’s not my business, don’t tell your parents’. Josh provided context to this and when he said ‘it’s not my business’ it’s more in a sense that it didn’t matter to him, it was during a meet & greet and he had to speak to more people so it wasn’t an appropriate situation to discuss this. When he said ‘don’t tell your parents’ it was because Johnny was worried how they would react so Josh wanted him to be able to stand on his own two feet before telling them, in case they rejected him and he had no place to stay.
• When Swoop asked how he felt about Johnny being very upset about the above, he firmly said ‘I don’t believe him’. He was so sure in his answer that Johnny was making this up and knew exactly what he was doing.
