How to Start a Blog as a Single Mom

If you’re a newly-single mom, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Maybe you’ve gone through a rough separation from your spouse where lawyers and divorce solicitors were involved. Or, maybe things ended amicably, but you still find yourself on your own for the first time in years.

You might find yourself asking…what now?

Moving forward to the next chapter of your life is all about creating your own happiness. How you go about doing that is obviously a very personal choice. But, if you feel you have a unique voice, something important to say, and you’ve always been interested in blogging, now could be the perfect time to get started!

Yes, starting a blog on your own as a single mom can feel overwhelming, too. But, it doesn’t have to be! In fact, the hardest part is often getting started.

With that in mind, use some of these tips to get your feet wet in the world of blogging. You might be surprised at how quickly you catch on and how much your readership can grow.

Figure Out Your Niche

In North America alone, there are over 4 million “mom blogs.” While that shouldn’t deter you from starting one of your own, it should help you to realize that you’ll need a unique perspective and an interesting topic.

So, find your niche before you even get started. What do you have to say that could be different from all of the other blogs on the Internet? Keep in mind that just because you’re a single mother doesn’t mean you have to write about parenting.

Choose something you’re passionate about. The more your readers hear your voice coming through your words, the better. Additionally, choose something that you think people would want to read. Is there a need for your topic? How can you bring your personality to it? These are all questions that can help you to decide on the right overall theme as you get started.

Choose a Platform and Domain

Here’s where the technical side of things starts to come in. There are multiple platforms you can choose to start your blog, but the most popular is WordPress. It’s fairly user-friendly, and you can choose to make it as easy or as complicated as you want. As you start to design the overall look of your blog, you might benefit from hiring a graphic artist to put together your site. Having a consistent look and theme will make it easier to build your brand.

Picking a domain name for your blog is just as important. It needs to be interesting and memorable. Don’t be afraid to get creative! Your blog’s name is really like a first impression, so it should be a reflection of what people can expect when they visit your site.

Write, Write, Write!

Marketing experts know that content is king. When you have a blog, your content will end up being your bread and butter. It will determine where you land on search engine pages and boost your social media presence. It will either be what people look forward to reading or what they steer away from. It will draw new people to your site.

It’s important to be consistent with how often you publish content and the type of things you’re writing about. If you’re regularly putting out content that people want to read, and they can depend on a publishing schedule, you’re likely to gain more loyal followers and readers.

Don’t let the idea of starting a blog become a chore. If it’s something you truly want to do, make it happen! You deserve to have your voice heard, and as a single mom, you know you’ll never run out of things to talk about.
