So you want to start a blog, but don’t know what to blog about.

I get that. Blogging is fun and seems like a productive creative outlet. It’s a great hobby and can lead to great things.

Having a blog niche can really help you gain an engaged audience who are interested in a specific thing, not to mention how much better having a niched blog is for SEO!

How to choose your niche

The problem is, most bloggers don’t know where to start.

I could say ‘blog about what you’re passionate about, what you know a lot about’. But I guess if you already knew what you were passionate about, you would be blogging about it instead of reading this post.

So I’m going to assume you still don’t have a clue.

The first thing to remember is that:

You do not have to have a niche. You can have a generic blog and just talk about whatever you are interested in. Lots of bloggers do that and some have gone far with it, in terms of making it into a business.

The second thing to remember is that:

You can niche down at a later stage. You can start off posting what you want when you want, then a few months down the line transition into something else. You can also change your niche when you want! I started out as a fashion blog, then started posting more beauty, then I hardly post those things at all now and just call myself a lifestyle blogger.

If you think you might change your niche at some point, then it’s something you need to consider when picking your blogs name. There is no point calling your blog ‘What Corinne Wears’ if you’re not going to be posting about what Corinne wears in a few months.

Although it’s better to blog about something you know a lot about, it’s not essential. There could be something you’re interested in that you don’t know much about but would like to learn more. This would be a great idea because it means you learn as you research for blog posts.

The point is, you don’t have to niche down, and if you want to, you don’t have to stick to that niche forever if it isn’t working for you anymore.

Do you have a niche?

  1. YES! I love this post. I’m fed up of hearing that you have to have a niche to blog. Your blog, your rules. Blog about whatever makes you happy and you’ll be on to a winner.
