There is something about standing in front of a new baby card with a pen in your hand that empties your brain completely. You know the people. You love the people. You are genuinely delighted about this baby. And yet somehow, when it comes to writing more than “congratulations,” the words just disappear.
I remember getting so many cards when my son was born, and the ones I kept weren’t necessarily the most poetic. They were the ones that felt real. The ones that made me feel like the person who wrote them had actually thought about me and my husband, not just about what you’re supposed to write in a new baby card.
So here’s a proper collection of messages — funny, heartfelt, short, from grandparents, for a baby boy or girl, and even for a second baby. Plus a quick note at the end on what not to write, because there are a few things that always land badly even with the best intentions.

These need to feel a little different — bigger, deeper, the weight of a whole generation of love.

What NOT to Write in a New Baby Card
Worth a quick mention, because these come up more than you’d think.
“Was it planned?” — never, ever, in any situation.
“You look exhausted” — they know. They really know.
“Enjoy every moment” — nobody enjoys every moment. New parents are running on no sleep. Let them off.
“Sleep when the baby sleeps” — genuinely, they’ve been told. Skip it.
Anything comparing their baby to another baby, especially around size or milestones.
“You should try [specific thing]” — unless they’ve asked for advice, they don’t need it on the card.
The best new baby cards say something true and kind. You don’t need to advise, warn, or predict anything. Just tell them you’re happy for them and that you love them.
What do you write in new baby cards? Is there a message you’ve received that stuck with you? I’d love to know — drop it in the comments below.
