Not long ago, I was invited to review Veeno York. This is very exciting for two reasons.

Firstly, because it’s my first review in York since moving here a few months ago and it’s fab not having to go to Leeds for an event.

Secondly, because I love wine.

We were invited to try the ‘Selezione’ Wine Tasting experience. It included two white wines, a rosé, two reds and a sweet wine with dessert.

There was also a sharing platter to compliment each wine.

When we went in, we were seated and offered a drink while they prepared our platter so we could start wine tasting.

We were brought the bottles of wines we would be trying, then presented with two white wines with a massive platter. We were told about the two wines and which cheese and meats complimented each one.

Then we were left to try both wines as we pleased. Once we had finished, the same happened with the rosé and reds. Then we were brought a tiramisù to have with a sweet dessert wine.

My favourite wine was ‘The Wine of Love’, a white wine from the Zibibbo grape which had elderflower, floral notes, and fruits.

We both had a favourite wine and decided to stay or another glass after our wine tasting experience was over.

The place had a lovely atmosphere and we both said we would come back again. It was a Saturday evening, after 8pm. Most places are packed with people and it’s hard to get served. Veeno was much quieter and relaxed. Ideal for having a catchup with a friend. I hate bars that you have to shout to be heard in!

I expect this is due to the location. It’s not with the main bars and restaurants in York so you’re unlikely to stumble on it by accident.

The wine experience was something I would recommend trying. If I had a friend come visit, it would be a perfect place to take someone to do something a bit different than just going to the pub. For £26.90 per person, you get 6 glasses of very nice premium wines with a platter of food and a dessert. Although it’s not a full meal’s worth of food, it’s more than I was expecting. I had a big lunch at work before going and the platter was enough for me.

The service was wonderful. We were served by a young Italian woman who really did know her wines. Or at least the wines we were tasting. She came across as passionate about wine and was very friendly. We spent some time chatting about wine, Veeno and she was asking about my blog.

Although the food and wine were lovely, it’s the service and staff that really made the night special.

We’ll be going to Veeno York again for sure for a glass of wine or two.
