Like most people, I have become increasingly passionate about using more vegan and eco-friendly products in all areas of my life, including beauty products. In recent years, there has been a significant rise in the popularity of vegan beauty brands in the UK. I am clearly not the only one becoming more conscious of the impact my choices have on the environment and animal welfare.
This shift in behaviour has led to a growing demand for vegan cosmetics and skincare products. Let’s look at the reasons behind the surge in vegan beauty brands and why choosing vegan beauty products is beneficial for both consumers and the planet.

The Growing Demand for Vegan Beauty Products
People are becoming more mindful of what they put on their skin and are seeking out products that align with their ethical values, leading to a growing demand for vegan beauty products in the UK. I think this is brilliant!
According to a study conducted by Cosmetify, a beauty discovery engine, 62% of women surveyed stated that their beauty shopping habits had changed significantly in the past five to ten years. They have become more aware of the impact certain ingredients have on the environment and are actively seeking out brands that are more ethical.
When it comes to purchasing beauty products, organic, natural, and vegan products are the top choices for consumers. The study revealed that 68% of respondents prefer to buy organic products, followed by 61% who opt for natural products, and 49% who choose vegan options.
Interestingly, the study also found that while only 9% of respondents exclusively purchase vegan products, 56% admitted to buying vegan products all the time or more frequently than before, even if they themselves are not vegan. This indicates that vegan cosmetics are gaining popularity among a wider audience, beyond just vegans.

One brand that has made waves in this space is Vegamour, offering a range of vegan hair and skincare products. Their leave in conditioner with heat protection and Gro hair serum has become a staple for many people – you can see for yourself with the thousands of reviews left on the product page that the customers are very happy with this product.
The Impact of Veganism on the Beauty Industry
The rise of veganism as a lifestyle choice has had a significant influence on the beauty industry. With more people adopting a vegan lifestyle, brands recognise the need to cater to this growing customer base. As a result, there has been a surge in the number of vegan beauty brands in the market.
According to research from The Vegan Society, sales of vegan beauty products in the UK saw a 38% increase in 2018. This growth is down to the changing consumer preferences and the increasing demand for cruelty-free and vegan options. Additionally, Google searches for “vegan beauty” in the UK have doubled every year since 2012, highlighting the rising interest in vegan beauty products.
The Body Shop, a well-known beauty brand, experienced tremendous success with its vegan products. In 2018 alone, they sold over three million vegan products in the UK. This shows that there is a strong demand for vegan beauty products, and brands that cater to this demand are reaping the benefits.

Why Choose Vegan Beauty Products?
1. Cruelty-Free and Ethical
One of the main reasons why consumers are turning to vegan beauty products is their commitment to cruelty-free practices. Unlike traditional beauty products that may contain animal-derived ingredients or involve animal testing, vegan beauty brands are dedicated to using plant-based and cruelty-free alternatives. This means that no animals are harmed or exploited in the production of these products.
By choosing vegan beauty products, consumers can support brands that prioritise animal welfare and contribute to the movement against animal testing. This aligns with the ethical values of many individuals who want to make more conscious choices in their beauty routines.
2. Environmentally Friendly
Vegan beauty products are not only kind to animals but also to the environment. The production of vegan cosmetics and skincare items typically involves sustainable practices that minimise harm to ecosystems. These products often use plant-based ingredients that are renewable and biodegradable, reducing the environmental footprint.
Additionally, vegan beauty brands are more likely to use eco-friendly packaging materials, such as recycled or biodegradable packaging. This further reduces waste and contributes to a more sustainable beauty industry.
3. Health Benefits
Vegan beauty products are often free from harmful chemicals and toxins commonly found in conventional beauty products. They prioritise natural and plant-based ingredients, which can be beneficial for the health of the skin and hair. These products are less likely to contain harsh irritants or allergens, making them suitable for individuals with sensitive skin.
Vegan beauty products are often formulated with nourishing botanical extracts and oils that provide essential vitamins and nutrients to the skin and hair. This can result in healthier, more vibrant-looking skin and hair over time.
4. Innovation and Quality
As the demand for vegan beauty products continues to grow, brands are investing in research and development to create innovative and high-quality products. Vegan formulations are constantly improving, with advancements in technology and ingredient sourcing.
Vegan beauty brands often prioritise the use of natural and organic ingredients, which can offer numerous benefits for the skin. These ingredients are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that help nourish and rejuvenate the skin, resulting in a healthier complexion.
Additionally, vegan beauty products are known for their lightweight textures and fast-absorbing formulas, making them suitable for a wide range of skin types. They are also less likely to clog pores or cause breakouts, as they do not contain heavy oils or synthetic ingredients.
Supporting the Growth of Vegan Beauty Brands
As consumers, we have the power to support and encourage the growth of vegan beauty brands. By choosing vegan beauty products, we can contribute to a more ethical and sustainable beauty industry. Here are a few ways to support the rise of vegan beauty brands:
- Research and Educate Yourself: Take the time to learn about different vegan beauty brands and their values. Look for certifications such as the Leaping Bunny logo, which indicates that a product is cruelty-free.
- Read Labels: Look out for animal-derived ingredients in your beauty products and opt for vegan alternatives. Some common animal-derived ingredients include lanolin, carmine, and beeswax.
- Share Your Experience: If you discover a vegan beauty brand that you love, share your experience with others. Word of mouth is a powerful tool, and your recommendation can help others make more conscious choices.
- Support Local and Independent Brands: Many vegan beauty brands are smaller, independent companies. By supporting these brands, you are helping them thrive and grow in a competitive industry.
- Engage with Brands on Social Media: Follow vegan beauty brands on social media and engage with their content. Sharing their posts, leaving comments, and recommending their products can help raise awareness and support their growth.
- Advocate for Change: Write to beauty retailers and ask them to stock more vegan beauty brands. Encourage them to prioritize cruelty-free and vegan options in their product selections.
By actively supporting vegan beauty brands, we can contribute to a more compassionate and sustainable beauty industry. Making the switch to vegan beauty products is not only beneficial for the planet and animal welfare but also for our own well-being.

Wow, I had no idea 62% of makeup buyers changed their habits in the past five years. That’s amazing. I know for myself since I have sensitive skin, I always looked at labels. I also know someone who has dairy allergies so when they buy makeup they have to look at ingrediencies. Honestly, I started getting in the habit of looking at labels and ingrediencies as you mentions to make sure I know what I’m putting on my face.
I’m all for using vegan beauty products, and many of the brands I do use are vegan. I like using vegan brands because as you mentioned, they are cruelty-free and better for the environment. Also, Vegamour sounds like a fantastic brand!
