Perfect Your Resume

Your resume is your chance to make a great first impression on a prospective company and is the first thing you can do in your goal to landing your dream job. If it’s not in tip-top shape, your first impression may also be your last. Use the following tips to write an irresistible resume.

1. Include a summary or objective at the top of your resume. If you’re just starting out in your career, write about what you hope to accomplish with your prospective company. If you’re a more seasoned professional, highlight your past accomplishments and anything beneficial you can bring to the team.

2. Make sure your resume tells a story. If you’ve only held a few jobs, it’s okay to include them all. But if you’ve held a variety of positions, only go into depth on the roles that are relevant to this position.

3. As a general rule, if it’s been more than 5 years since you graduated college, there’s no need to include your GPA on your resume.

4. The strongest resumes fit on a single page. If your resume is more than a page long, critically read the contents to decide whether they need to be included.

5. Take a look at the layout of your resume. Is it easy to read? Does it flow logically? If not, consider reorganizing. Your resume doesn’t have to be fancy, but it should be straight forward.

Write Your Cover Letter

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, you need to have a cover letter. Even if the application process doesn’t require a cover letter, include one. A strong cover letter has the following elements.

6. Include a personal introduction. Do a bit of research and figure out who the hiring manager is, or even the manager of the role you’re applying for. Avoid generic phrases like, “To whom it may concern”; they’re cold and impersonal.

7. Be sure to explain why you are a good fit for this role in particular. Directly address parts of the job description or experience that is relevant to this particular company.

8. Show your personality! A cover letter is a chance to show who you are beyond a list of qualifications. Give them a taste of what you’re like to interact with.

9. Proofread, proofread, proofread. Make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors and that you’ve got the company’s name and job title correct. Mistakes on a cover letter suggest that you may be careless as an employee.

Go for Interviews

You got an interview—hooray! An interview is a real foot in the door. It’s your chance to show off your chops, and get to learn a bit about the company, too. Here’s how to ace it.

10. Tailor your outfit to the tone of the company. Do a bit of research on social media and company culture to determine whether the office runs casual or formal. While you shouldn’t wear jeans to an interview, you also don’t want to show up in a full suit and tie to a room full of sweatpants.

11. Bring a hard copy of your resume, a notebook, and something to write with. Even if you don’t use them, they’ll show that you’re prepared.

12. Make a list of questions to ask in your interview. These questions are more to prove your critical thinking rather than logistical questions. Don’t ask things like, “What’s the vacation policy”; it’s a bad look.

13. It’s more than likely the company will perform a background check on you. What do background checks look for? Criminal records, employment, and more. If you know of a red flag in your history, it’s best to address it upfront.

14. Follow up your interview with a thank you note to everyone you met with. You can find email addresses on the company’s website or on LinkedIn. Rather than copying and pasting a generic thank you note, personalize it to each recipient. If you can, reference something specific that happened in the interview.
