On Sunday, I met up with some old work colleagues for an afternoon in Leeds. After much deliberation, we decided to go to Reds True BBQ. We went before, a few years ago, for my leaving meal.

When we went in, we were greeted by a woman in a white hoodie who looked like she had just climbed out of bed. She told us it would be a 15-minute wait and there was nowhere to wait in the restaurant. Even though we could see empty tables in the back. It was chucking it down with rain so we ran to a bar next door.

When we came back, a waitress wearing restaurant appropriate clothing seated us and informed that they were out of pulled pork, beef brisket, jackfruit and ribs. Which was fantastic because I had already looked at the menu and wanted pulled pork, or brisket, or jackfruit. It was only 7 pm so seemed pretty poor to be out of those items already, especially as it meant the only things left on the menu were burgers, chicken steak and salmon.

Anyway, we picked our food and I went for the swine fries for starter and superfood salad with my only option – pulled chicken.

The starter was really tasty. It had pulled-pork on it which they had apparently ran out of so I was a bit confused. But anyway, fries good. They tried to bring the mains before they took away our starter plates, the waitress took them back to the pass and rather than clearing our table right away, she had a chat to the other waitress with our back to us for 5 minutes or so while I food waited on the pass. Great service.

The food was lovely though, I’d have the superfood salad again, but just not with chicken because I find that’s quite a boring meat to have. There were seeds, quinoa, avocado, crackers and salad. I also good an onion ring on the side but it was probably the worst onion ring I’ve ever had. So I left it.

It wasn’t a great experience if I’m honest. Staff not dressed for service, kitchen not equipped for service and the staff didn’t feel very on the ball!

Rubbish.

  1. Love that you’ve given such an honest review. We’ve been quite a few times, but we haven’t been to Reds for such a long time! We used to go loads when we first moved to Leeds, but I think it was more because of the novelty of it – We moved from a little village near Teesside where there’s nothing even close to Reds up there. I agree though, we’ve had quite poor service therein more often than not have been asked to wait even though there are tables available. It’s only because the food is so good that we’ve gone back.
