Looking for new jobs can be both an exciting and stressful time. Whether you want to change careers or stay within the same sector, reading through job descriptions that list skills you don’t have can be disheartening. But you have to be patient and have faith that the right job will come along.

There are lots of different ways you can look for new jobs. Here are some of them:

Job Websites.

The most popular job websites out there are Monster, Indeed, TotalJobs, Reed and LinkedIn Jobs.

The jobs on these websites tend to be posted by recruitment agencies who screen applicants CVs and will contact those they think may be a good fit for the post.

One thing to be careful of is that the same job may be posted on different job sites – be sure you don’t apply for the same job twice as this could make you appear a bit careless or like you are mindlessly applying for anything. Even if you are keen to get out of your current job – you don’t want to come across as desperate to new employers!

Recruitment agencies.

Submitting your CV to recruitment agencies is a great way to get a job that is a good fit for you. They usually call you to discuss your expectations – but you maybe need to do a bit of chasing to get an immediate answer as they get a lot of CVs submitted.

Ensure you follow up with agencies if you haven’t heard anything back for a while and be ready to discuss a realistic salary and job role for you.

University and college websites.

Lots of universities and colleges have a stand-alone job website. While they do sometimes advertise on job sites, it can be more efficient to sign up to their job website and browse jobs.

Local council jobs.

Check out your local council website, they also have stand-alone websites where you can create an account and apply for various jobs.

Civil service jobs.

There are some amazing jobs on the civil service website if you are prepared to take some time to apply.  The application process is lengthy and there is lots of competition, but they are fantastic jobs to get into.

What do you think is the best way to look for a job?

  1. Interesting article. My strategy would be very different if I’d need a job. I would first see LinkedIn groups and social media in general. Nowadays I find most of my customers for my company via social and my contact and I’ve found my actual job via LinkedIn and the job before that via my connections. 🙂 Of course, sites listing jobs are good resources as well but often the combetition is bigger that way. In addition, my jobs never end up to those sites.
