Those of you that remember my blog in its early days will probably remember Lilly. Lilly was my housemate for 7 years. She used to take photos of me in early blog posts and even feature in them.
For the past 3 or so years, Lilly has been on her own little adventure of travelling the world. Last January, she moved to Australia for a year. She settled in Melbourne, which is ideal as that’s where I stayed in November. We met up for a weekend.
I assumed she would show me around some of her favourite places to eat and drink. But no. Lilly went all out. Her and her housemate had arranged to rent a car, booked an Air Bnb and planned to go to Phillip Island for the night.
About a 90-minute drive away from Melbourne, we set off. It was a hot day, thankfully we had air con in the car.
We pulled up at one of the beach car parks and there were signposts for the various hikes you could do. We picked the longest one which was about 3 hours and 7 miles.
It was a bit cooler thanks to the wind. We set off up a sandy trail and reached a beach. The tide was in so had to wait for it to change so we could get to the next part of our trail. The beaches were beautiful, as you can see.
After a bit of climbing over trees and on rocks, we came off the beach and onto a trail. What met us at the top – stunning views of the coastline. The photos do not do it justice.
We even saw a few bits of wildlife!
The only downside was the flies. They were everywhere and madly attracted to my hat. There is nothing more frustrating than having flies in your face and on your arms and legs.
Once we got back to the car, we headed to the shop to get some wine and cheese, of course. After burning 1000 calories according to my Fitbit, we had earned it. We went to our Air Bnb which was a basement apartment of someone’s house and went to watch the Penguin Parade – what Phillip Island is famous for.
You can’t take photos of the penguins so don’t have any, sorry. It was a cool experience but it was a lot of waiting around to not see very much, then get pushed out of the way by people trying to get a better look.
We went back to the apartment, had our wine and cheese and played Cards Against Humanity. It was a perfect day!

It looks amazing, wow, those views! Sounds like you had a wonderful time. x
She is a true friend! And wow your photos are amazing! Xx
What a gorgeous beach!
Oh what beautiful photos! đ
We went to see the Penguin Parade on Phillip island and it was magical! We got lucky though, and it wasn’t such a busy time, it was very cold so that might have impacted it. But getting to walk up the hill back to the tour bus with these cute little penguins hopping alongside was the best! I really wish we could take photos, but I understand why not. I’ve never explored the island though, it looks great in your pics!
Hope that you are having a wonderful weekend! We’re going to have a quiet one here after a similarly quiet week, as we’ve been a bit under the weather.
How amazing that you meet up with an old friend! Seems like you’re having a good life in Australia!

I am finding all your posts on Australia super interesting, I’m learning a lot about my own country from you. Haven’t been to Phillip Island before (and only been to Melbourne once) but it looks amazing. So nice that you and Lilly were able to meet up all the way over the other side of the world.
