What to do on a long haul flight

As I’ve just been on a long haul flight, I had to find a few ways to occupy myself for a 13-hour flight followed by a 9-hour flight. With two hours in Hong Kong in between.

I’ve never been able to sleep when traveling – even on 24-hour coach trips to Italy. It’s been about 13 years since I’ve had such a long journey, but I don’t plan on being able to sleep loads. So here are some things I planned to do on the plane to help time fly a little faster.

What to do on a long haul flight

  • Go through the 30k photos on my phone and delete some to make more space.
  • Download loads of games to my iPad before and find a new favorite.
  • Blog.
  • Read It by Stephen King.
  • Watch movies the plan has.
  • Put a TV series on my laptop before.
  • Sort out my documents on my laptop.
  • Use the plane’s wifi to play online games for fun.
  • Listen to podcasts.
  • Plan blog posts.
  • Delete apps I don’t use.
  • Play Minecraft.
  • Edit photos.
  • Play Nintendo DS.
  • Edit Instagram photos in VSCO cam.

What do you do on long flights?

  1. Oh this is a good list of things to do on a flight! 🙂

I’m not a very good flier – so I usually just try sleep most of the way to get it over with, haha! When I went to the UK with hubby (then fiance) he didn’t believe me when I said I slept most of the flights – he was loving the food and the movies and the constant food, I was just trying to sleep the flight away, ha! We have two very different ways to look at flights!

Hope you had a great weekend 🙂 Was cold and wet here, a bit unexpected after our warm week!

  2. I always make it a point to try to catch some sleep when I’m on long flights and balance it with catching up on my reading.

  3. I read alot on flights and I watch a lot of movies. I find listening to music helps too so I always download a few new albums before the flight! I wish I was one of those people who could just pop on a face mask and sleep through the whole thing but it never happens!

  4. This is a great list. Like you, I’ve never been able to sleep much on long flights — if I’m lucky I’ll doze for a few minutes. One of the things that helped me on my last long flight (which wasn’t terribly long, just 8 hours) was to just accept that I’m not going to sleep. I didn’t even try except when I was truly tired and felt like closing my eyes for a few minutes (I didn’t sleep but just relaxed). I think a lot of my frustration during long flights — and then my frustration after — stems from the resistance to not sleeping. Accepting it, and just watching movies and flipping through magazines, helped tremendously.

I’ll likely have a couple of long flights in the next few months as I’m traveling for the year, so I’ll try it out again and report back 🙂
