What I did on Christmas Day

5-things-19That’s it guise, another Christmas over. Well, kind of. It’s 9:30am boxing day as I type this and I’m having another Christmassy day today!

But here’s how I spent my Christmas day.

I had already done Christmas with my boyfriend on Wednesday and I may post about that separately. Or I may not. Let me know if you actually care and I’ll write about it and share some pictures if you do.

I knew Christmas was going to be special this year a few days before. For those of you that don’t know, my brother, his wife and two kids moved to Australia 11 years ago. They also had two other children when out there that I’ve never met. I’ve not seen them since, apart from yearly FaceTime chats over Christmas and social media.

A few days ago, my niece kept trying to Facebook call me. Which is bizarre as we don’t usually video chat. She said she had something to show me and I finally got through.

‘Look where I am!’ she said, then turned the camera around.

She was at my parents house! Her and her fiancé had been travelling Europe then had come to England without telling anyone and turned up on my parents door step as a surprise. They’ve been going around surprising everyone they’ve not seen in 11 years.

She’s 22 now and I had not seen her since she was 11, so she’s changed a lot but still the same. If you think I’ve got a dry sense of humour, you should meet her. She’s brutal as fuck. It totally comes from my brother, that does!

So, Christmas Eve after work I drove home and saw her. After a few hours, we went to the pub with lots of my family and had a great night. Going to the pub on Christmas Eve has become a tradition over the last 5 years or so. I sometimes have to miss out if I’m working late but got to enjoy the tradition this year.

We got back about midnight and went to bed.

I woke up the next day about 8am and got up and went downstairs. My niece woke my Mum up and we opened presents. It was weird having more people there was with all my brothers being much older, it’s been just me, Mum and Dad for years!

This was also the same for Christmas dinner. We usually have it just the three of us then my brothers come over on boxing day, but because my brothers wife was working he came to our house with the two troublesome twins.

And they are troublesome. 17 months of pure energy, getting into everything, getting mad at themselves because they can’t carry every teddy they want. They’re cute though, so that’s okay.

It was lovely to have a big Christmas dinner. There was 8 of us all together. Dinner was lovely and I was so full after I had to lay on the sofa to silently die.

In the evening, we went to my Aunts and Uncles – another tradition. We had more food thanks to my Aunt putting on a buffet and chatted, FaceTimed my brother in Australia.

We got home at midnight and straight to bed!
