I love watching Freelee the banana girl on YouTube, which is where I got this datorade recipe from. She’s a vegan who eats so much fruit and veg you wonder why she isn’t obese – but the vegan lifestyle she sticks to means she can eat as much as she likes as she is fuelling her body with healthy plant food.
You can read more about that on her website: The Banana Girl. Freelee is very opinionated about veganism and often posts content that is hard to see, so please be cautious when viewing her videos as some of them are made to get attention and disgust and shock you. I do not always agree with what she has to say, and she is getting more and more extreme as time goes on, I do love datorade.
Although I’m not vegan, or even vegetarian, her lifestyle both intrigues and inspires me to eat well and exercise. One of the things she often makes in her vlogs is something she refers to as datorade. It’s basically a blend of dates and water – she often adds other things into it, such as vanilla essence or cocoa powder.
Chocolate Datorade Recipe

When I got some dark chocolate cocoa powder by Dr Oekter in my October Degustabox, I new I wanted to make something healthy to fuel me while training for my next 10k run. I decided to make my own version of Datorade.

Ingredients:
- 7 date with the stone removed
- 2 bananas
- 12 raspberries
- 2 teaspoons of dark cocoa powder
- about 250ml water

I blended all the ingredients together – you can use milk or coconut water if you wish and add more if you don’t like your smoothies to be as thick.
After I had got the consistency I like, I poured it into a glass and added some raspberries as a bit of decoration.
It was delicious and isn’t too sweet that it feels naughty! It’s a great way to get some fruit and fibre into your diet!

The concept of this is really interesting! Isn’t is a bit of a sickly combo? I love mixing dates with pb at the moment. And haha yeah, I’m not vegan/veggie either but the lifestyle seriously intrigues me too. Thanks for this post! I will have to give it a try 🙂
It’s not that sweet, really! I kind of wished it was a bit sweeter but didn’t want to add any sugar – honey might have been a good thing to add though.
This looks yummy actually 🙂 Love shakes 🙂 xx
This sounds really different! It looks so pretty in the little jar too. X x

I love the idea of dates in a smoothie. I was a vegan for a long time and I still try to eat that way 80% so thank you for putting me onto the Banana Girl. 🙂
What made you stop?
Although I’m not a vegetarian either, I’m always on the hunt for healthy, meat-free recipes since they’re usually quicker to make when I have a busy schedule. This smoothie sounds delicious!

I’ve seen a few of her videos as my friend was inspired to become a raw vegan after seeing her YouTube channel.
I tried eating as much fruit and veg as her but ended up bloated after only two days.
My aforementioned friend has made this before and he said it was delicious but I’ve never tried it. I think I will now, thanks!

Is there a suggestion for a substitute for dates? I don’t like them at all but other than that, the other ingredients sounds super yummy.
Reflection of Sanity
You can’t really taste them that much amongst the other ingredients!
Lovely pictures and great recipe!

Who says you can’t have the best of both worlds?
That looks great – I’ll have to try it next time I need a chocolate fix. Is it just available in chocolate flavour?

Just delicious ! <3
I’m hearing more and more frequently the praises of veganism. Is it expensive to be vegan? How do you get over the cravings!?!
I know you aren’t vegan, but I am pretty much just wondering out loud haha.
